Full highlights as USA's Missy Franklin wins Gold in the 100m Backstroke Final at London's Aquatics Centre on 30 July 2012.
Swimming has featured on the programme of all editions of the Games since 1896. The very first Olympic events were freestyle (crawl) or breaststroke. Backstroke was added in 1904.
In the 1940s, breaststrokers discovered that they could go faster by bringing both arms forward over their heads. This practice was immediately forbidden in breaststroke, but gave birth to butterfly, whose first official appearance was at the 1956 Games in Melbourne. This style is now one of the four strokes used in competition.
Women's swimming became Olympic in 1912 at the Stockholm Games. Since then, it has been part of every edition of the Games. The men's and women's programmes are almost identical, as they contain the same number of events, with only one difference: the freestyle distance is 800 metres for women and 1,500 metres for men.

Missy Frankin, 1.85m tall, is taller and bigger than average men, whose heights are estimated 1.75m-1.80m. You will be not able to beat her with disadvantage of your size if you're a amateur or semi swimmer instead of a professional swimmer

To be honest, in my opinion, all of them were sorta expected to win their events. Except Katie Ledecky. No one really expected her to keep her pace in her 800 free at age 15. She really stunned/shocked people at what she did. Allison, Rebecca, Ye, Dana, Missy all were expected to win their events due to the fact that they won their race previous times in an international meet while it was Katie's first. :\

Even with bad technique swimming is great exercise, but you could get someone to give you an hour of coaching a week... its more fun when you improve your technique.
Running for me has to be moderate, my knees are 37yrs old now. So I don't run very much, but hill running and brisk walking and a bit of weight training.
It's not sexist if it's true: guys are generally better at swimming due to muscle/fat composition and all the scientific stuff I won't get into.
But it's not sexism if it's just naturally true.
We'll be watching the Olympics in 2020.

Inky Ink That's exactly what I do. I sprint the butterfly to get a lead, but I fall back during backstroke, but I get ahead during breaststroke, and sprint the freestyle.
