    Which game of the SSX series was/is your favourite if you don’t mind me asking? I’ve only played Tricky and 3 and I found 3 too rigid… a bit robotic, Tricky felt so free and the characters still feel so alive even by todays standards, I just can’t get enough!

    • @kelecat7094
      @kelecat7094  Год назад +4

      my faves are both 3 and tricky. in the past i've said that i like 3 just a little bit more, but now i think it's a little unfair to compare them. the two games aim to achieve similar things, but not the same thing.
      tricky nails the arcade "just sit down and play" vibe with bold personalities and total creative freedom over the track design. it's also a refinement of the first game, which was good in its own right but greatly lacked polish.
      3 is meant to be a longer-form kind of game, with a little bit more backstory - thankfully it doesn't bog down the arcade elements that makes SSX what it is. it completely overhauled the feel of the game.
      tl;dr: i love both tricky and 3! they aim to do different things: 3 is, in my opinion, the SSX formula at its most refined, while tricky is the ultimate arcade version.

    Great run. I've been watching this little by little over the past few days. Still new to ssx speed running. Why do you upgrade stats so late in the run? Wouldn't it be beneficial to do it much earlier?

    • @kelecat7094
      @kelecat7094  Год назад +1

      In other real-time runs, we buy stats earlier. In this run, there's two achievements to be aware of:
      All Peak Race RR1 Challenge
      All Peak Jam RR1 Challenge
      Both of these achievements require level 1 stats across the board (which means Rider Ranking 1.0) and completing the All Peak events. So, in this run, my objective is to unlock Peak 3 as fast as possible while getting a few event achievements along the way, completing both All Peak runs with 1.0 Rider Ranking, THEN beefing up the character to make the rest of the run easier and faster.

    Is there anywhere that documents the actual difference stats make? I've always wondered what stats like Acceleration and Speed actually do
    I know Toughness is a weird one.

    • @kelecat7094
      @kelecat7094  Год назад +2

      There's no official place as far as I know, so why not do it here?
      Acceleration literally just determines how fast you get to full speed. The difference is subtle, even from 1 to 11.
      Edging makes sharper turning possible on all terrain types.
      Speed changes your maximum speed cap on any physical object - air time is always capped at 75 MPH / 120 KM/H. The difference is only a few KM/H on the ground, but it adds up over a full run. Also the higher ground speed enables further jumps.
      Spin is of course flip/spin speed, and makes the most obvious difference from 1.0 to 11.0.
      Stability, I have no idea. I think it prevents you from tripping over your turns. There's a special "arms flailing" animation you get on extremely harsh turns that happens much less on max stats, but I don't know if it's Stability or Edging that makes the difference.
      Toughness makes you punch harder. Less charge time is required for a successful knockdown, becoming instant at 5.0. Maybe you can take direct impacts with obstacles at higher speeds with greater Toughness too?
      Tricks affects the animation rate of which all grabs, including tweaks and ubertricks. Higher stat = faster animations = less situations where you wipeout/more situations where you can squeeze in a trick.

    hey kelecat, I have a question that you've probably been asked many times, but here I go. do you know if there's anywhere that you can find a tutorial on how to spin boost? im generally having trouble on finding some kind of place where they showcase all the tricks and glitches you can do in ssx 3 when speedrunning

    Is there a reason to use a particular character in 3 or are they all the same? I feel like some of them have hitboxes that extend over their heads because of height difference but that's all I've noticed

    • @kelecat7094
      @kelecat7094  Год назад +3

      Every character has pre-set, permanent "tier 1" ubertricks, and some are better than others. Other than that, all characters should be fine to use, even in most competitive places.
      Long form explanation below:
      Hitboxes:
      Just like you thought, there's some subtle differences in terms of hitboxes. Mac, Kaori, and Zoe, and Allegra are generally the best in this regard, and are the best to control in most scenarios as a result.
      Nate bonks his head on stuff more, as well as hitting obstacles, especially while on rails, in places where others don't. He also has a UNIQUE problem with a particular strategy for hitting the second phone booth in Metro City. I have no idea why! Elise and Psymon are too big for some stuff too, but not as bad.
      Griff might have trouble reaching collectible flakes where others don't. He has a tendency to "flinch" on landing on the ground, which is why you might see him "spin out" and lose speed for no reason sometimes. Every character has this "feature", but no one else has it nearly as bad as Griff.
      Ubertrick presets / Monster Tricks (MT for short):
      These Ubers are immediately available, with no need for buying them in the lodge.
      Mahogany and Can Opener are the best in Uber 1, but they don't matter a whole bunch. Madonna, SSXorcist, Morgan Grinder, Karolicker and Slinger are, in that order, the best in Uber 2.
      In order of real-time speedrun potential - meaning Checkmark%, 100%... this is my opinion btw:
      Mac has Mahogany and Can Opener. Uber 2 has Madonna and SSXorcist.
      Viggo has Can Opener. Uber 2 has SSXorcist, Morgan Grinder and Karolicker.
      Allegra has Mahogany. Uber 2 has SSXorcist and Slinger.
      Zoe has Mahogany and Can Opener. Uber 2 has Slinger.
      Moby has Mahogany and Can Opener. Uber 2 has Slinger.
      Kaori has Madonna and Karolicker.
      Elise has Madonna and Karolicker.
      Nate has Mahogany and Can Opener. Uber 2 has Morgan Grinder and Karolicker. Size makes him harder to use.
      Griff has SSXorcist. Weird physics make him hard to use.
      Psymon has Mahogany and Can Opener.
      I think that covers everything! I might have missed something in the Ubertrick list - just a heads up.

      @@kelecat7094 that's incredibly helpful - thanks for taking the time to write that. I'm going to have to start using Mac more, he seems like my best pick since I'm at the stage where I'm mostly just spamming Stone age and Executioner for score in freestyle lol.
      Bonus question, if you feel inclined to answer it - I often build combo by doing a 180 just before a rail to lose speed then spamming jump, spin, and tail press on the rail but I've seen TAS runs where they instantly jump to 20x barely leaving the rail. Is this mostly TAS specific or can this be done in a regular run by a fairly average player like myself

    • @kelecat7094
      @kelecat7094  Год назад +2

      @@HairyNun The method you mentioned, called "wired 180s" back in the day, is the most common combo-building method for more competitive players. It's allowed in any Freestyle run.
      That combo-building technique you see in TAS where they achieve 30x without ever leaving the rail is called "rail glitching". All you do is move the right stick up and down on a rail. The faster you do it, the quicker you'll build combo. It's inconsistent when done by humans but has incredible speed potential. It's banned by some Freestyle players when pushing high scores, so if that's your goal then maybe avoid it. The rules aren't set in stone for Freestyle like they are in Race, so if you really want to you can still use the rail glitch for combos.
