In 1961 I lived in Encino and was a SCUBA diver, 15 years old. Shortly after the Dominator went on the rocks we carried our SCUBA gear down the bluff and dove the Dominator. The ship stunk of the rotting grain. I recovered a light bulb from the engine room. Great video. Charlie, Avalon, CA

We lived in PV when I was growing up and my parents forbade my brothers and me from going down those cliff trails to the ocean and exploring that wreck. Of course, we went down there whenever we could. There used to be a big section of the ship’s bow in the water and during low tide, we’d climb up it. What my parents didn’t know, didn’t hurt them.

I remember the ship running aground when I was 10 years old. Lots of news coverage back then. Walked to the wreck from Malaga Cove back in 1969. The bow and stern were still visible back then. The tractor was in better shape back then as well. Thanks for video and exploring the wreck and Nike sites. Brings back a lot of memories.

So awesome to see this place again....thanks Oddity Odysseys!

Nice knife, Bethany! Great to see that you can open carry a nice survival style blade in a state that won't let you carry anything, except (obviously) spray paint cans. Love your adventures!

BS dude, you can carry damned near anything in CA. I never go anywhere in the boonies without at least some kind of survival knife. I've only been to the wreck once via sailboat. It's interesting to walk down there, never done it. You can always walk south from Torrance Beach but it's a long walk.

@@theccpisaparasite8813 Well, at least in my state I am able to EDC a pistol, pepper spray, and 2 knives. You probably can carry anything in CA, as long as you don't get caught ;)

@@garretvaughn7936 I think you need a CC permit for a pistol but in most cases you can carry what you want, knives, tasers, Mace, etc. They get a bit touchy on public transport (e.g. airports), government buildings and the like, but it isn't as restrictive as you might think. Think of California like this, Greater Bay Area, LA County and environs, parts of Orange County and parts of San Diego County ... and the rest (90%) of the state. In the rest of the state, you might as well be in Idaho. No one cares. It's hard to explain California to those who don't live in this weird place. There are wierd things about California you'd never know unless you really looked ... things you'd associate with more "traditional values". Rural California simply doesn't care what laws are passed by the aforementioned demographics. They have their own code and adhere to that. More California's were/are killed in Iraq than any other state ... in fact, twice as many (excepting Texas). I'll say it was a better state decades ago than it is now. I'd dearly love to pitch about 20,000,000 people out of the state.

We have had a lot of Californians move here in the past 10 years to ..... Idaho. ... you said it. BTW, if you are over 18 and don't have a record, you can CC without permit. Thanks for the info!

Went to see this a few weeks ago on a work trip, thanks for the idea. Drain pipe "trail" was more like a shallow cliff! It was easier going up, because I could climb with all four limbs. (On my way up, a local diver was heading down for a nighttime dive and he made it look casual and easy!) My feet hurt from that hike on the rocks to get the the wreck. I need some thicker hiking boots.
Got some great shots, though! Turns out someone I know on a photography forum lived there when the Dominator was first wrecked and he offered some added details. He said the rotting grain in the cargo hold stunk up the area for months. I found it interesting to see the photos over the years and see how the hull rotated and flipped as the center of gravity changed. There was some noticeable deterioration in the wreck just in the 3 years since you did this video.

I used to climb down to the wreck in '64 / '65. The ship broke up pretty fast as the storms hit the point very hard. I remember picking up deck spikes and small hardware scattered in the rocks. We would go down the cliff just above the wreck but we were indestructible in those days.

Ha! Are you guys following me around?! I grew up in PVE (Laguna was later). The local lore is that the spiny lobsters caught there in the '70s were sweeter due to all of the sacks of grain. There used to be much more of the ship left, and you could climb around in the front end (really eerie if you were a kid). The surf spot right there, a gargantuan left hander which rarely rears its head is affectionately known as Doms. You guys should do the Mushroom House at Blacks Beach in La Jolla with the funicular railway that goes down to it. Great videos!

ok folks let me give you the real scoop about his....It is not as rosy and easy to get tooo. I wished they had said something more about this...... Be careful of the parking signs some say No parking during school days and others give a time limit. this is a treacherous hike down to the bottom of the "rocky beach." There are technically 3 ways of getting down there and both are very treacherous. Do not where flip flops or sandals . You should where hiking or close to shoes with good treed. Once you have made it down the drain pipe way (most of which i did sitting down on the concrete) you are on the rocky beach. There is no sand or pebbles.............ROCKS. The land is NEVER level or flat. If you have bad knees, calves or ankles you should avoid this all together. Don't bring your dog..Billy goat ... yes ....but not a dog. You are walking about 2 miles on rocky, unlevel beach the whole time. If you are not in decent shape you should pace yourself. The closer you get to the wreckage the rocks get bigger and hard to navigate. I got to see the wreckage but by the time I made I was too tired to actual go to it because of all the super big rocks and the uneven land. I got some nice pictures though. Once you pass the wreckage about 100 ft. there is a "fire escape" style stair case but if the its not lowered ...forget it. If you walk further passing the stair case around the bend in the mountain there are 2 trails. We took the last trail to climb up the mountain. It was super steep with little brush or embedded rocks to hold to while climbing up. some how I mad it..with my new best friend i met while parking my car. You should be in some decent health while doing this also. I hope this helps.
