Hadn't heard this before and it is great! I never realized Manfred Mann's Earth Band was quite so proggy. I'll have to check out more of their 70s stuff!

Interesting idea! Yes, it's definitely the NATO alphabet. But the opening is the BBC Radio shipping forecast, so I always assumed stranded at sea vs Stranded in Iowa!?
You'd need to ask Manfred Mann - I was just brought in as a session singer on this one as Chris Thompson had left the Earth Band and Manfred had a commitment to his record company so had to get the album out.
In the track listing Mike Heron is named with Manfred Mann as writing the song.
Would love to know what it means myself! Didn't really question it at the time.
      Pete

@muskepticsometimes9133 Hi again, this has been niggling me.. seems it was originally a song released by Mike Heron a few years earlier. I'd forgotten that, if I ever knew! So, like the Springsteen track, Blinded by the Light, seems that Manfred Mann's version of Stranded in Iowa was also more widely listened to.
