Growing up is realizing that the grandma wasn’t evil. But the mom actually was.
The grandmother was more crazy in the head then evil, the mother however was pure evil for murdering her own child and trying to murder the others just for money.
They will never, ever make movies as intimate like these. It’s beautiful, haunting, and timeless.
Louise Fletcher played the grandmother so well....her evil face never left me.
The way the character was written for the movie bothers me.
She seemed so one dimensional, just evil and bitter all the time.
In the Lifetime movie she seemed more human, still a bitch but wasn't a piece of shit everytime she was on screen.
I definitely prefer the original movie though.
Crunt so she is..very well portrayed indeed..the sign of a great actress
And in the end,she wasnt the actual bad guy..
She plays the evil witch really well. I love that. I think she is a great actress. I like her role in that one Jack Nicholson movie I can’t remember the name of.
@@MindField65 One Flew over the cuckoo's nest..Movie with a sad uncalled for ending..
One of THE most atmospheric , haunting , melancholically sad soundtracks I've ever heard.
The old mansion , foggy landscape , and the secrets hiding shame and terror behind such wealth Is perfectly captured.
By the time you finish the film you feel the most potent nostalgia lingering on.
They don't make em like this anymore .#MoodyMasterpiece
I agree the first time I saw this my blood ran cold! How can anyone do that to their children?!
Out of all the 80's horror movies I've seen, this is the only one that got me emotional.
It wasn't a horror movie. At least I didn't think it was. It was more like a drama.
@@ShaniyahD not horror in the general sense, but horrifying from a reality standpoint in my opinon
@@ShaniyahD Interestingly, it was always in the horror section of video stores and rental outlets when I was growing up, even though the film doesn't really fit that. It's more a drama with a bit of a suspense thriller thrown in.
Same here! I really wish Cory didn't die, that hurt my soul.
So like dark drama then ? I like the movie. It is very sad and dark and the soundtrack really strengthen that feeling. I count it as a horror movie because it has a spooky mansion with creepy characters and it is a little disturbing in a psycholocical way.
I was a child of the 80s and there was definitely no shortage of horror movies around at the time. However, this movie was the most horrific story I had seen because it dealt, not with the menace of a seemingly invincible boogeyman, but with the ugliness that exists in human nature. Particularly, a mother who was willing to murder her own children out of pure, unadulterated greed and a grandmother acting as her facilitator. Not that this in any way represented my own family dynamic. Nonetheless, it was the scariest thing I'd ever seen and this music is the main reason why it still permeates in my mind almost 30 years later. It makes me feel the feelings of a seven year old boy I once was. As if it were yesterday.
Justin JT Lott I fucking love this comment.
I agree omg you summarised this perfectly.
Wow
Indeed. Very creepy, but good film that stayed with me for a long time. The music was so sad in this film. The remake came no where near this film on the level of mystery!
Ys but I think seeing those things ad getting it with a terrible way actuall makes your soul pure...
I learned humbleness from selfish, pureness from the evil.

My heart broke when it turned into the music box version at the end.
This, is what real music is. I love it, beautiful.
Yes girl
Loxannah Shortridge reminds me so much of when I was a child
Music makes you live!!!!
This movie truly broke my heart. Each time I hear this particular track, I'm reminded of the moment they were informed of Cory's "passing". This was one hell of a movie not only for its time, but in general. What those children went through...my goodness. INCREDIBLY haunting
Amazing that it was a true story (at least the being kept in the attic part for the inheritance) that V.C. said someone shared with her about their family. Crazy beings exist....
@@TheRetroWoman80Sinilar to Richard III with his nephews
This is stunning so hopeless and sad, yet hauntingly beautiful.
This music fits the movie nicely. I had a grandmother that used to live in a house like that one. Sometimes when I stayed there, I would hear noises at night. Voices screeching, howling, footsteps on the ceiling, and there was also this soft growling sound that came from the closet. I swear that house was haunted! My grandmother was a great cook though, so it was hard for me to stay away, lol.
I remember sitting in the cinema. And this music came on. I thought this is gonna be my sort of film. I had now idea. What a classic. I cant believe its been 25 years. Oh my God. I must be getting old. Yeah. I'm 43. But I still feel 18.
You’re 51 now son lol

This is the epitome of sadness and depression . If you need to cry, listen to this.
Marcel Beaulieu I agree. This music reaches into the depths of a very sad soul. If you're a depressed person, this music will only make it worse.
Really I get so happy and a rush of exciting thrill goes through my heart and soul
@@radicalbeachbabe2868 I love that!! You sound deep like me. 🙌
@@anjistone2946 I also love the sound of monks chanting. There is something so intriguing about it. Puts my mind at ease. I love Enigma music and here is another movie score track I really love. Christopher Young is a musical genius.
Observing the flowers in the attic for so many years, after all these years. I still get goosebumps from this flower in the attic. This is evidence of the cast's and director's inventiveness.❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🇬🇾🇬🇾
3:18 is where I'm drawn into this theme. It's so innocent and haunting at the same time. The strings do a very good job at conveying the mood of the piece. Like it makes you reflect on key moments of your childhood and the very moment you were woken to the true nature of humanity . The moment you ceased to be a child
Louise Fletcher and Victoria Tennant were wonderful in this film. “Go ahead mother, eat the cookie!”
Christopher Young, he mastered so many movie scores...can't also forget Hellraiser. So glad I was a deep music loving/ movie credits observing addict from a young age.
I would be intrigued to see a crossover of both films
I can imagine the children opening the box seeking some retribution against their mother and grandmother
Pinhead would be thrilled to ensnare such evil
@@SamuelBlack84 I like that horrific idea!
1:58 is my favorite part of this. The piano and strings kicking in gives it such a nice release. It is musically euphoric to me.

Im a audio engineer and this is music perfection!!!!
I love the creepiness of this track. It really sends a a rushing thrill through my heart and soul.
Saw the movie as a teen. I can barely remember anything about the movie except the soundtrack. So haunting that it still resonates with me even 27 years later. Thanks so much for posting the music from this movie.
Rometiklan oh my god I saw this movie when I was just 4! My mom was born in the 80s and she had this movie on disk and I watched it with her it then became my favorite movie
Such a haunting soundtrack. I remember the books and this film so well. No crappy remake will ever capture that initial feeling from this story. Pure horror and genius.
The music in this movie will never be forgotten.
This was such a great book and movie.
Such a hauntingly poignant story.
I know. Horrific to this day that some of this darkness was actual facts of life someone shared with V.C. about their family.
this movie had THE MOST BEAUTIFUL HAUNTING MUSICAL SCORE! wow, it just gave me chills!
I remember my Dad forced me and my siblings to watch this movie when we were kids. I remember being so annoyed but now I’m glad that he introduced us to so many classic films.
I feel in love with this piece within seconds of its beginning. It perfectly sets the mood for the introduction of this sad and haunting story.
I first saw this movie back in 1987 and i loved it. I did not read the book until like 2006 even though the book came out in the late 70's. Fans of the book were disappointed in the first movie, i was not. It remains one of my favorite movies ever. The remake came out in 2014. I saw it and it was cool, a lot more closer to the book, but this changed nothing as far as which movie is my favorite. And..Louise Fletcher quickly became one of my favorite actressess. So is the music. Christopher Young's score still haunts me to this very day.
I love the music for this film. It was so hauntingly beautiful
TheNpcsim hauntingly beautiful? Man that’s messed up
😒
Haunting...the word many of us feel listening to this masterpiece.
This isn't music, this is art.♥️♥️ more then beautiful, a masterpiece.
grandmothers house tho its been many years since i last sore it i will always remember even my first impressions was one of fear and wonder my child hood was soon to be lost my innocents shattered and all our dreams destroyed by what we would find with in ..
One of my favourite movies that I watched over and over with my older sister as a child. This song brings me right back. So hauntingly beautiful. Makes me cry every time.
I can understand those tears because this music touches that part of the soul BUT when I was 7 or 8, at the time, my focus was more on satisfaction over the mother getting her karma.
Such a haunting yet beautiful tune. Just keep coming back to it. The mother was so horrid to lock her children away in a prison and be so greedy, greedy that she forgot about her children. What mother would ever have a heart to do such a thing! Even if this book/film is not real, I still feel for the children and especially for Chris and Cathy, for it must have been a very traumatic experience for them. And those poor angels, Carrie and Cory.
Best thing to come out of the movie. This could of won an oscar if it had been attached to a bigger and better film.
I have to listen to this soundtrack anytime I read a VC Andrews novel
That’s the only way to do it 👍
Listening to this I can only see those children in the attic, tragic movie, but beautiful and twisted at the same time.
Masterpiece. So underrated
This is the most beautiful piece I have ever heard
What a beautiful haunting song gives me chills
Eerie, beautiful, haunting, and at moments indescribable.
The remake had NOTHING against the music composed for this film. I admit that I did watch the original movie before reading the book and I stand firm in saying that this is my favorite version of the story. I think it all depends on what you experience first. For me, the shock of the story came with this movie and the music only strengthened it.
Jon Knecht While I appreciate the remake for sticking closer to the authenticity of the book with its scenes, I absolutely agree 100% on the musical score in the original movie. When I hear this music, I think Flowers In the Attic. I also think because this wasn't made for TV, the cinematic intensity is also more present as well. This series always haunted me after I read the entire book series years ago.
I love the original film; it was intended to be closer to the book but the studio interfered, cutting much of the relationship between the two oldest children, eliminating plot points and changed the ending. But it's still better than the atrocious Lifetime remake. Better acting, atmosphere, chemistry, and of course this haunting score by Christopher Young.
Absolutely right. The two seem to go hand in hand. Like pavement markers delineate the direction of the road ahead on a dark night, this music outlines each phase of the story. It's consistent to each scene, so as you follow along with this beautiful, but foreboding music, you knew what to expect to come. Every thing from loneliness, to abandonment, to anguish, anger and pain, this music carries the same theme of the movie and tying it together with one common thread. Absolute genius in the whole first production of this movie. The original and best.
The only thing I would change is to make the 80s version of the film more true to the book, even more than the Lifetime movie did.
This music absolutely MADE the movie. That and how beautiful the actress for Cathy was in this version. No offense to the girl in the lifetime movie, but she was nowhere NEAR the beauty Cathy was made out to be in the book. I will say the Christopher in the lifetime movie was better than the 80s one looks wise lol, more accurate to how the book described. But yes terrible acting all around for the lifetime movie just about. This 80s version just had something magical about it that's made it so memorable for so many people in these comments. I love the eerie, creepy feel of it. Just really wish they couldve thrown in the forbidden love between cathy and chris, as well as the sexual tension between chris and the mother corrine.
I absolutely LOVE the book series.
@@birdy369 To be fair, the studio took most of the incest out of the 1987 movie before it was released. There are some hints left; one of the strongest is when Cathy and Chris embrace in the attic after watching Corrine and Bart Winslow at the party. That was definitely not a brother/sister hug (since the scene has something of a suspicious fade-out, I'm inclined to think that there was more to the scene in the original cut).
The entry of the flute and the jewel box are the innocence that is otherwise a powerfully haunting tune. What a gentle yet effective score. I was so immediately drawn to this film and its music when it first came out. I watched it over and over. My fascination with it I think had something to do with the siblings finding a way out and escaping the evils of their own family (hmmm). This was to some degree a one off for composer Christopher Young, but I can’t imagine where this came from within him. It was so beautifully executed. And so well introduced with the gargoyles and gardens of the estate. And no one else could have really captured the grandmother other than Louise Fletcher. Her calm and controlled tone - demeanor was unpredictable and so horrifying. Now - with all that ... “go on - eat the cookie!!” Thank you for posting these...
Reminds me of Pyscho 2 main theme. Beautiful.
yes! Both start with the same 4 notes. Probably a temp-track "inspiration"
Only the real 80s babies will know about this before they put out some funky remake.
There is already a remake produced by Lifetime. I wasn't impressed with it at all, even though it included more from the book. The original is still superior in nearly every way.
Theres a new one....ahahah....and it was so good. I liked both.

I have this movie on dvd and I have read the book. Both of course brilliantly impressive.
This is one of my favourite all time movies of the 80s but its more like the phycological horrors of life and the evil that exsists among us. Ive watched it a many times. Very Sad and painful to watch.
Its evil how the mother changed her tune from being the loving mom to decieving her children so they will stay and die in that attic.
All because she wanted to win back her fathers love and acceptance because she commited a sin of insest.
Furthermore, this film shows exsactly what people will do for money and for acceptance in all aspects of life.
Moreover, it displays how evil some families can be. Exspecially the grandmother who was behind it all and had no love in her cold and wicked even poising the food aswell as the mother where the little boy died and didnt even have a deacent burial. Never took him to the hospital. From that I could see it was premedated.
Lastly, this fortells alot of what is going on in the world today and it shouldun't be ignored😢. The music by christopher young who is very talented I love all his music in most films I have. His music is always emotional and it goes with the movies hence why I use this track to sleep.
All based on an actual conversation V.C. once had with a person actually being hidden in an attic so their parent would get an inheritance.
The dark stuff that occurred in the story was crafted by V.C. though.
It reminds me of the story with George. C. Scott the changeling there's alot of similarities. Even though they say it was fiction. It could also be somewhat true. These things happen and are not unheard of.
Beautiful haunting music. Reminds me of Psycho 2 theme. 💕
This is my favorite kind of music to listen to, it is so mysterious and deep. Even if you haven't seen the movie you can tell just by listening to this masterpiece that it is going to be very intense and mystifying. It is wonderful! It makes me think of being innocent and childlike floating through some enchanted forest with evil lurking after you like a nursery rhyme.
You're absolutely on point with that.
I still remember the small duplex house I lived in when I saw this. Loved the music.
That single flute voice...cuts right into my soul
This is absolutely one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard
5:19 is easily the best part of the song. It's also the most haunting part.
Once heard, never forgotten.
My favorite movie and book when i was a kid..i finally got to visit the mansion and its absolutely beautiful..its in the beautiful town of Ipswich Massachusetts
One of the most dark scary, but not scary movie with a fabulous soundtrack to go along with it.
Sometimes true horror development within our own family members.
5/26/23 Old school classic movie from us 80's Babies.
love the eerieness in the music makes you feel like your the children in the attic as well it's lovely and at the same time haunting
I had heard about this movie for years. The title alone intrigued me. "Flowers in the Attic". So poetic. I had no idea what the movie was about, but I was always curious about it. Finally, I watched it yesterday and it was far more disturbing than I could have ever predicted. It took such dark turns that caught me off guard and the suspenseful moments left me on the edge of my seat, with my mouth hung open in anticipation. This movie is going to stay with me for a long time. It was so disturbing, but so well made.
My favorite Christopher Young score piece 👌 and a phenomenal film by far
I had no idea that Christopher Young composed this! I'm obsessed with his score for The Gift (Sam Raimi's). Young just has a way of beautiful-ing horror themes. The man's a genius.
Haunting and beautiful.
Brings back memories of my youth, watching this movie. I know it's been remade but there'll always be one version: the 1987 version!
I prefer this over the remake.
You're not alone!
Same
I Always come back to this
Rest in Peace Cathy, Chris, Cory y Carrie.
This movie was one of a kind horrible at its best so many women out here just like this mother great book I never saw the other flowers in the attic movies this one was enough I love this one this music is just beautiful to me back then music in movies always was so beautiful this is breathtaking 2:00 is the part for me every instrument is just beautiful❤
Interestingly this movie is placed in the horror section. I wouldn't personally classify this movie as horror. It's just a really dark story. This instrumental is extremely powerful and still moves me today. I saw this movie when I was 9 and I still love it. When people hear this instrumental they may immediately write it off as dark, but I think theirs so much more to this instrumental than that. It's a beautiful piece of art.
The most haunting, Erie, beautiful,Euphoric soundtrack ever. The music box 👌I love this movie. I own it on dvd. It still scares me today as it did as an 80s child. The new version has nothing on the old version to me. Laura fletcher as the grandmother was scary as hell and the Crane Estate sets the movie perfectly
Thank you for keeping this very special theme music live here on You Tube.
The brilliant and underrated Christopher Young bringing class and gravitas to everything he scored. His work for Hider in the House (also a great movie) in 89/90 was very similar to this suite.
There's soundtracks like this that make me want to learn the flute.
Beautiful absolutely love this
I hope this stays on RUclips forever
Love this haunting score. Up there with Children of the Corn
It sounds like a ghost. Beautiful!
Thankyou thankyou....so long ive searched for this...
This score was beyond its time when created
If only we could take the two movie versions and merge them with this musical score.
Saw this in the theater when I was 8 years old... and then gobbled up every book after that. Whew.
It's so sad....how can a mother poison their own kids???How???Flowers in the attic....😢😢😢😢😢
I have a scavenger group on facebook for those who want to participate, it's full of surprises and treats.
In the later series of the books, it's explained that Corrine poisoned the doughnuts (not cookies) so that it would make her children sick enough to have to go to the hospital and escape the attic. She just didn't foresee any of them actually dying from it.
My gf grew up on the V.C. Andrews books. "Heaven" was her fave series but "Flowers" was her fave movie. The music, especially the parts where it kind of sounds like a "siren song" type of music are her favorite parts.
I love this music!!!! Thank you for posting. I’ve been going crazy trying to find this!
I remember liking these books when I was a preteen or so. Just came here b/c in the movie when they go up the stairs to the attic for the first time, the song reminds me of the Rains of Castamere! I just played it and they are the same or nearly the same. It'd take more time than I have right now.
I think the theme and the lesson from this movie is this. Always, and I mean always, double check the “powdered sugar” on the cookies when you are at grandma’s house.
So beautiful. We seem to have similar tastes in music!! There are few scores that affect me the way this one does. (Not to mention that I am obsessed with the stories.) You may really like the 'Legends Of The Fall' score. Really reflects the emotion of the story as well. Thank you for posting.
beautiful
i thought the new one was closer to the book, but i liked this old one better.
I agree. Additionally, I don't think Heather Graham was the right choice.
magikmana me two I like the old one way better
V.C. Andrews actually had script approval over the 1987 movie; the studio heavily edited the film after a negative reaction at a test screening. It would be interesting to see the original director's cut, which apparently featured the incestuous relationship between the two oldest siblings.
Excellent title score!
