@@FlatTrackFactory 30:58 referring to the time on the video when dale summarized hand control and bar input. Not sure I understand the tictok reference. But anywho great videos! Thanks, Mike
I just re-read my reply, and it doesn't make the best sense. Haha. Sorry. I was agreeing with you. The TicTok reference was to the app that has short dramatic vids made to get people riled up. Dale and I make the opposite. Loooooooong drawn-out vids. Cheers!
OK, it took me multiple views and rewinds of this to get what DQ is saying with such infectious enthusiasm. I love this because I get counter-steering but so few riders can articulate it, if they even acknowledge it. I remember asking waaaay back at American Supercamp, do you push on the left bar when initiating the left hand turn/slide, and was told no, it wasn't a conscious thing but a byproduct of pushing the bars down like a broom handle. What Dale is trying to hammer into our heads here is that , because you're going with the bike rather than pulling yourself off the bike forward/outside. (Reminds me of Keith Code's "X-steering" where you're pushing the left bar forward from the right footpeg. (Which complicates advice to push down on the inside footpeg...). But now the most unique mind-blowing tip I've never heard elsewhere: , otherwise you're not in control. Wow!! Would love more explanation/analysis of this tip alone, but can't wait to try this! Thanks FTF and keep this great and unique stuff coming!
Thank you for the thoughtful comment. Dale is a National treasure and ambassador of the sport. I think we're lucky to get his perspective. I'm glad you agree.
Haven't been on RUclips for a while, this is one is Great! Even though the key point of the video is pushing on the bar, I think the drill is to show you're faster and more comfortable / in control going right one handed because you can be locked in and pushing on the bar while able to control throttle, going left and pulling is disconnected and unnatural, if you moved the throttle to the left side and reversed it would be opposite. Gotta love Quarterly. Nice screen saver with Sadowski, looks like Loudon.
You prolly dont care but does someone know a trick to log back into an instagram account..? I was dumb lost my login password. I appreciate any assistance you can give me!
@Tristan John thanks so much for your reply. I got to the site thru google and I'm trying it out atm. Seems to take quite some time so I will get back to you later with my results.
I'm new to riding flat track and I just found this video! Fascinating stuff! I have two questions: 1. when do you begin to put pressure on the left bar, (on the straight, after you turn in, or...? ), and 2. do you keep pressure on the left bar all the way through both turns - (1&2 / 3&4) - until you begin the straight, or do you ease up on the pressure at some point before that? Thanks! This was a really informative video!
Glad you found us! There's a lot to unpack in your question. We probably could best respond in another video. At the least it would be a fun excuse to get Dale on the channel to hear him say funny stuff.
this guy has given me the lightbulb moment ! I’ve raced Mx for decades and did very well in my teens but as I get older I’m struggling a bit at cornering and this conversation has literally just gone into my head instantly 👏
Dale's a great racer and observer of racing. We're working on a new video where he'll break down an even bigger riding and racing strategy error we all make.
For sure! This drill is not a starting point, but rather a catalyst to getting active racers to slow down and think about control inputs that have long-ago been encoded into muscle memory. Dale wants, I think, his racers to have a better understanding of what the bike is doing versus what that rider is causing the bike to do. Thanks for checking it out!
Correct me if I'm wrong. Is there something deeper being discussed here than counter steer? Been doing that for a long time. Started using it on the dirt, then later on the street. Made me faster in the corners with more control. If counter steer is the conversation here, it's a fun technique to practice and play with.
This dude isn’t wrong! I’ve been pulling a lot while pushing a little on the left, but haven’t ever really given it a solid push! 90% of my racing has been pulling to be honest. Great video!
Great videos ! I too experienced the 1 arm drill twice upon a time i took a three day class with this guy "Freddie Spencer?" I guess he won some stuff BITD . haha It was a "B" group-ish road-race course but we started on the XR100s and Freddie starts by putting his footpeg then his handlebar into the dirt not crashing I think he was even talk to us while he went by. It was a great course his helpers were Dave Aldana and Nick Ianatch . His one handed exercise was actually only your thumb and for finger on the throttle and he wanted max acceleration on the straights and max possible braking it was a relearning (for some people) to drive the bike with your chore, then Freddie said the most amazing thing "steering the bike like a down hill skier"weight on the pegs move the bike with you hips yada yada . It was amazing then he puts you on the back of his bike and does a few laps and, gets on it puts his knee into thew pavement lifting it over the curb while he calmly articulates the technique and benefits of using the front brake in a corner right through the apex scraping off speed and increasing lean angle (something that every other racer school teaches to never never do!) all this while trying to unpack that you're on the back of this crazy bastards bike and hes talking to you . It all boils down to flat track discipline

Just what I needed to hear, fantastic advice put in a way that I understand, thanks again 👍👍
Glad it was helpful!
“30:58” is about all my brain can handle while on the track. Great information, thank you.
Dale's a great communicator, IMO. Maybe not for the tictock crowd's attention span, however!
I can think of almost nothing while on the track. I think that's why it takes so long to learn. You have to get it all to become muscle memory.

Attack life like this man thinks. The world would benefit greatly and you will be remembered forever.
100% sage advice!
I remember doing that one handed drill at Danny Walkers Supercamp back in '07 and in '09, after wetting down the track, fun times.
Great video
Glad you enjoyed it

Dale is a National Treasure. And a great setup guy. He can really unscrew my head at the track when I get lost on setup.
Incredible incredible video. I will keep coming back to this.
"What are you really doing" mind blown

He's a great resource at the track for coaching and setup. Super-smart guy. Funny as hell, too.
"I'm just trying not to die" yep that sums up my riding in a nut shell
Oh, that is very "classic" Dale. :) Enjoyed that too!
This conversation is fascinating. Learned a lot. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it! Dale is a trip. Smart, experienced, fast racer who tells an awesome story.
The better you can explain it, the better you understand it.
So stoked to apply this next time at the track. I’m new to flat track, but this has highlighted one of the biggest issues I didn’t realize I had.

This video is golden.
I rode one handed in the 70’s
Recommend getting lower body position correct first before pushing the bike down. Then pushing the bike down becomes a lot easier .

This was really good.
Dale, thank you for helping Mike understand how bad he is at explaining what makes him so fast. I've been telling him for years!
Indeed. It's easy, as long as you don't think about it.

Had a little problem with Dale referring to his left and right hand and reversing them.

LOL I also feel like Dale is making fun of me LOL I won a lot of expert club sprint races and was pretty tired after 8-12 all out laps LOL.
Haha. To be fair, Dale makes fun of a lot of people!
DQ has been quick for so many years it's not funny, 2 OR 4 Wheels !
For sure!
