- A shootout of 6V6 tubes from Genalex, Tungsol, JJ & Electro Harmonix.
Loaded into a Lucas Miles Vintage Series Deluxe Reverb, with Hugh Stuckey as our test driver. To hear the subtle differences between the tubes we recommend quality headphones for monitoring.
Our impressions are ...the Genalex are the premium tube.It has depth, detail , is nicely balanced and musical.Bass tones are accurate and the trebles are smooth. If you want a hi-fi sounding tube , this is it.
The Tung-sol's are very even across the range, they have a pleasing refined tone. Will suit most applications.
The JJ's have that distinct rock voicing and drive which make them a good choice for rock players .
The Electro Harmonix's tone is similiar to the tung-sol's but not as refined.

For the tech heads. Plates are 420v. Tubes are biased at 24ma.
For the sound heads. The amp is miked with a sm57 running direct into a Sony HVR-Z1P HDV-CAM.Theres no fancy mic pre's or studio processors, no post eq., no mastering. Видеоклипы
Great to hear someone do a test who's not playing metal.
Okay Tung-sol look like the go for me too! Gonna be a very Tung-sol world out there.
i guess Im randomly asking but does anybody know of a trick to log back into an instagram account??
I somehow forgot the password. I love any help you can give me.
@Davion Kye Instablaster =)
The playing on the Genalex is what makes this sound so good!
I 'liked' this video after the first five seconds. Great playing, never mind the tubes!
I like the Tung-Sols best but this guy would sound good using two Dixie cups and a string.
But he sounds better with good equipment
The attack was markedly more aggressive after the first set of tubes and varied throughout. It's difficult to not be human.
This guy is an incredible player and a pleasure to listen to, but this is a perfect example of why a looper pedal or prerecorded track of some sort is the best practice if you want a truly consistent comparison.
U got it. Same song , same attack, same dynamics, same sonic result tube to tube/valve. I bought the Genalex pair for my Carr Skylark. Hope they are better than EHX. Already have tung sol, jj, and Sovtek black 6v6 tubes. Costly hobby like they all are.
If I am not crazy the best sounding tubes here, to me, were the tungsol. The jj got 2nd place and gold lion 3rd. None of them sounded bad. But it is hard to tell how a power tube sounds until breakup is introduced. Generally speaking a amp that sounds good clean, sounds good driven, but tubes can sometimes do weird things when driven. I also agree that the same thing should be played for consistency. Great demo though! -PK
Genalex (smooth, jazz), Tungsol (forward, rock), JJ & Electro (twangy...for country)
love the way you play
I run a pair of the JJ 6V6 in my real deal 1964 Deluxe Reverb, biased at 25 mA. No problem, the JJ can actually take the heat easily since they are actually overbuilt. Sound good to my ear, and are demonstrably more reliable in high volume situations than the EH, which I have seen a couple times fail catastrophically in other DRs.
Yep, I just put JJs in my Deluxe because I had 2 sets of EH red plate in a row. But I do like the sound of the tung sols best in this video and have wanted to try them in my deluxe. I like tung sol 12ax7s too, might be my favorite new production tube
Great feel and tone, it's all you :-) anyway I think I like the Tungsol.
Thanks for this demo! Great playing and sounds. Genalex sounds just right and best to me in this clip. The JJ s sound like they could benefit from a higher bias.
why do you think that about the jjs? lows or highs?
Genalex - Jazz, beautiful lows and not a hint of harshness, not a lot of top
Tung-Sol - Rock/Metal/etc., slightly mid-scooped, cuts through well, sometimes harsh
JJ - Funk or anything clean, the highs are super open and clear on these without being too harsh, not much bottom or fullness
EHX - All rounder, very flat-sounding, slightly mid-forward in how it distorts.. a bit boring for me but with pedals could be great
Sort of want all of them now...
Just my $0.02!
If the 24mA are plate dissipation at 420V witthout screen current it is pretty hot for a fixed bias amp. That is ~ 72% dissipation at idle for a 14 watt tube. Pretty good is you play your amp clean at 3 but if you plan on diming the amp you should go with a slightly cooler bias. The jj6v6 can take it easily but the new tungsols are more a 12 watt tube.
To my ears, the Genalex sounded smooth (and a bit darker than the others) which explains why it worked well with your jazzy playing and feeling.
Cheers
The ONLY 6V6 that HAD a marked difference to the others!
I am running JJs on a tube stereo amp but when I run it hard the highs get strident. I am going to try the Gold Lions and see if they might be a bit smoother.
Was the tone and volume on the guitar the same for each demo?If so, the gold lions are the best IMO.I would like to hear each demo with the amp pushed into overdrive a bit too.
When the playing is as smooth and rich as this, what does it matter what tubes are used? Great playing...I use original RCA and Tung Sols I'm my 73 deluxe reverb, and the new Tung Sols sound as good as the NOS ones.
Thanks for this. Very helpful!
The Genelex definitely sound the warmest and sweetest for Jazz. The Tung Sol sounds best suited for blues. The JJ have an over-all great sound for a broad range of styles but I'd say rock/indie the best. The EH tubes sound the brightest and have the most twang, so probably best for that country/folk tone.
Hey dude, great video, love your stuff! Would you mind telling me what scale you're playing during the run from around 0:25-0:30? Would really appreciate it
I have a champion 600 and--well the circuit isn't the greatest. I was thinking of retubing. I love the sound of the genalax. I would like to be able to either dime out this little amp and stay clean, or have a smooth breakup. Currently, the overdrive is pretty harsh. Do you have any recommendations?
Is "Tubes are biased at 24ma" correct? If so, why do that? Normal bias for a 6V6 is 15 to 18mA (at 420V - just 17mA is 60% of maximum dissipation of a 6V6). The test shows that even when overheating there's not much difference. Differences within brands might greater than differences between. And the playing was amazing.
what was the bias set to on the Genalex tubes?
Now have someone change them for you and tell us which ones are which.......
JJ's seem to have the least tone, most everything else sounded sweet especially the gold lions.
Gold lions seem to be the most round and softest transient. Electro harmonix seems brittle
I've found that you have to consider the type of speaker, what sound good with an eminence may not with a celestion. It's trial and error, your buddy's deluxe reverb may like jj while yours likes genalex. Even the power transformer can be a factor, type age and so on. I know because I've owned at least twenty old fender and vox amps.
most vintage amps will behave like Hector Salamanca. thats why we love them
酷!!!谢谢你!我找到了我想要的声音
JJ for me. 😊
Wow
Gold Lions, by a Miles ...
Thanks for the video and all your efforts and your tme. You play great, but it would be even better, if you could take a looper and loop a few minutes of music, so pick attack, placement of the pick and all other variables are constant. It is often very subtle differences in tube sound itself, so for comparison I think that would make a better ground for judgement. :)
yes! i agree.
i'm thinkin that the playing is great, but the comparison technique is trash.
Interesting that Tung Sol AX12a7 sound the brightest in your other comparison but for 6v6 the sound the most muddy in this comparisoon
So it makes basically no difference. My amp repair guy only had Tungsol and they definitely seem fine to me.
this isn't a good video to hear the differences, since the player doesn't use the same exact passages to compare, but i still heard a difference. "no difference" is relative, and i think it's actually pretty apparent.
The gold lion wins
Genalex sounds best.
Those Genelex and Tungsol 6V6s all come from New Sensor. They are the same tube.
No indeed, they are NOT the same tube. Also Electro Harmonix comes from New Sensor. Same company but not the same valve.
To me EH sounded the thinnest. Just my ears
le tung sol sono un pelino più compresse mentre le jj suonan più acide sulle altr
TungSol first and EH second. JJ worst :/
The comparison would have been more accurate if he had played the same exact piece for each tube.
Gold Lion 6v6s are MUCH better than the others. For jazz they are perfect, highs are amazing. Tung Sol are louder, great bass and mids but they are not so refined on the highs. EH and JJ you have what you pay, i.e. good but not so good.
gosh...the other tubes dont even compare to the Genalexes. he's even playing better in response to them.
i thought they sounded almost as bad as the JJs. maybe worse. TS best, EHX second best for sure.
Russian (Genelex, EHX, false tung sol, whatever the name) are poor hamonically. They sound hard and metallic, Typicall of russian tube signature. JJ are astonishing, really good, smooth and mellow (and i don't like their signature in 6L6 amp, but there, it's works well). If i have to go for a russian tube, the EHX are the more balanced of the 3, false tung sol are the worst. Genalex have no dynamics at all...
Why you don't play metal, jazz is boring !
To each his own. This is very articulate good playing and you can hear the tone of the amp instead of listening to distorted bees buzzing metal.
@@vrcimino1250 Bees buzzing are a necessity for saving the planet. Save the planet : play metal !
@@dafxtone I've gotta admit that is one great reply!!!
Genalex: very hi-fi in a good way
Tung-Sol: farty in comparison to the Genalex
JJ: somewhat neutral in tone which could be good for stompbox dudes
EH: Increased high end and the least rounded of the 4
