  • Ben More is a mountain near the Scottish village of Crianlarich. The Cobbler (Ben Arthur) is a different hill. It took me almost 30 years to realise this error. I climb up Ben Arthur, also known as The Cobbler, in the rain. It was challenging, but also rewarding.

When backpacking in much younger days, we used walking sticks for balance and leverage on the trail. Most of my backpacking experiences were on the Appalachian Trail in Vermont and New Hampshire.

Scott I have used walking sticks for the last couple years. I use them basically for two reasons. 1. balancing and going down hill (especially with a pack on) for support 2. with a bad knee sometimes I will need a "third leg" as it were to keep from sliding or to give support to my good knee. I do not use them all the time but only in places were the path is very steep or when crossing rivers or unstable rock areas. About three years ago I talked to a person who had hiked for years and were still hiking in their 80's (mountain hiking not just walking) they told me that with a knee replacement and hip surgery the sticks had extended their pleasure of hiking for another 10 years. After trying them out in the Black Hills of South Dakota I found that for situations such as I have stated they really allowed me to scramble into areas I had stopped going simply because I could use them to help get in and out. It can't hurt to try BUT only IF you feel the need. Watching you in this video it doesn't look like physical limitations have hit you too bad - especially hiking. Very much enjoyed this video and your others as again they give me a glimpse of the world I may never get back too. FYI I am almost 70 and still get out to hike and backpack when possible. ATB and hopefully that last little bit didn't mean you "just missed" the train!!

Hi Ken - thanks for your response. I've seen relatively young people using walking sticks as well, and I think for some it's just reassurance while walking along uneven surfaces.

I recall being at the top of the North Peak in a howling gale. My friend and I were cowering behind a cairn to stop us being blown off the top. While there, we observed a common spider effortlessly walking on top of a boulder on the cairn with not a care in the world. How it was not blown away is beyond me! Great video Scott, brought back lovely memories.

The stick is a must. I was also a late starter to getting a stick but now I have several.

Sticks are used to take pressure of your knees, ascending and descending if you use them correctly

Hi Scott. I have what I call walking poles. I find them invaluable on steep up and downhill and also as a balance when crossing obstacles like streams. I have however tripped over my friends poles on occasion as he seems to not have much control over them. Great video and I will be doing the Cobbler soon. With my poles 😉

Hi Scott. Not a fan of walking sticks myself! Find they get in the way especially on more technical ground! Attempted the Cobbler a few months back but took me around 8 hours! I'm not as fit as I used to be! Impressed with your speed and all the while looking so comfortable! Loving your content at the minute so keep it up!

I use walking sticks whenever I’m off path for balance and peace of mind and for street walking I use a rose covered walking stick I’m 55 but do my utmost to walk 4-5 miles a day with my border collie I feel very noticeable with my walking stick but in the woods etc with my poles I just blend in and it lovely 💕🐾

Enjoyed your walk from the comfort of my arm chair. I use 2 poles for balance nowadays but a friend does nordic walking which is a whole new ballgame. Thanks for sharing lovely scenery even in the rain xmuri
