I would recommend you read through "The Shallows" by Nicholas Carr. It describes what you're feeling, the hijacking of the attention span, and gives some ideas on how to break out of it. And it's a compelling read so it should keep your attention!

    • @altertopias

I kind of broke it 1) realizing I was literally bored with the internet (because I checked it very often and so it didn't really gave it time to renew quality content) and 2) starting with the most attention-hijacking books (best-sellers, thrillers, romances) until I was reading for hours and days without problem, and 3) reading a bit everyday of harder books.

I think it's important to remind yourself that reading is a skill and the more you read, the better you'll get at reading. Language is natural and innate, but writing/reading is something we need to learn and maintain just like any other skill. This also means that if you don't read often, it's gonna take effort. The more you read, however, the less resistance you'll find.

Imagine inventing libraries now, they’d either be free but every seventh page was an advert for a new bed or earphones, or you’d only be able to read a curated list of this month’s books unless you paid £10/month.

Libraries still exist...find one near you. You may find that there's little to no advertising on the library's website. If you do see ads, it's for library resources/services. As for e-books/audiobooks - I have a library membership, I use 2 different sites (through the library) and I haven't seen an ad once. I've been on those websites for 7 years...

"Atomic Habits" by James Clear is about enabling habits through similar steps listed in this video. Essentially, take out the mental pressure and aim to be 1% better throughout your daily life. Through adjusting your attitude and environment then change is possible and relatively simple. Just don't over pressure yourself!

On the off chance you need another rabbit hole of interesting stuff about people to go down - not everybody forms pictures of what they read in their head. I love to read fiction, but reading words doesn't create the picture in my head. Basically, inner experience can differ vastly between people, and we all have a striking tendency to think everybody thinks through the same processes we do, but it's not true! I've found learning about this to be fascinating. Some people don't think in words or pictures at all.

What finally helped me get back into reading was two things. 1 - set a goal to read 30 minutes a day. I set a timer but almost always ended up reading more than that. 2 - not having a lot of options. Living in a foreign country where books in English were harder to come by, I had limited options, usually from book exchanges with friends. I realized that I was reading more than when I was home in Canada because there I could read anything and I was so paralyzed by choice I ended up reading nothing. So find a way to limit your options!

I can guess though and I usually don't think it will be good. There is always struggle, hardship, and worst of all embarrassment before you get to the feel good ending. And modern books don't all have happy endings either so there is no guarantee I will get that reward at the end of my discomfort.

Also, can't recommend the Libby app enough if you have a library card. They've got audiobooks and ebooks available from your local library. Oh! And on the subject of finding books to read, two of my favorite tools:
    1. Booktube - Find a creator with similar taste to you who does book recommendations - found leena norms during quarantine and think I immediately started reading more.
    2. Pinterest - If there is a book you really loved or a show/movie you really love you can just search for books like it. When I was really into Stranger Things, I did this and ended up finding one of my favorite books "My Best Friend's Exorcism" by Grady Hendrix on one of those lists.

Not being afraid to quit on reading a specific book is the best advice on this video. I lost count of how many times I didn't read i single page for days, weeks or even months because I was trying to finish a book I was not enjoying. It's what you said: didn't get to the good part that everyone was taking about? So what? There are other good books out there that you might enjoy more! And you can abandon the book for two years and then figure that you should try reading it again, and two years later it becomes one of your favorites.
I also love to read three to four books at a time (although I've heard it doesn't work for everyone).

Came down here to see if anyone addressed the library comment. Glad to see they did, haha, but I will add to the sentiment: Get to know your local libraries! They are still very relevant and have resources you maybe didn't even know about (genealogy records, help applying for a job, instruments to borrow, a canoe to borrow, info on local organizations you can join, interesting classes, a recording studio, etc.)

My tip for reading more books is that I have them all on my Kindle, and I read every night in bed. I've got it all figured out. Where the pillows go, etc. I used to rarely finish a book, especially novels. I would read maybe one novel a year, and poke around in non-fiction, but with my Kindle method, I've finished 20 books so far in 2020! And you're so correct about quitting them if you don't like them. There are no rights and wrongs. You find what works for you.

I read 6 books in one week earlier this month after not finishing a book for over a year. I don’t know what motivated me so strongly again. Reading was one of my favorite things and then I stopped almost completely. I’m glad you decided to make this video now. Some good thoughts to help us keep reading.

    Hey, Craig?
Thanks for doing a video with the valleyfolk, man. I was even younger than I am now when I started watching you, and Sourcefed/phillip defranco kind of took over my developmental years, and I fell off from your videos. I shouldn't have. Everything that I'm looking for can be found here, too. In a more humanistic way, sometimes, even.
I hit the little bell. I don't wanna miss another second of you two anymore.

My favorite way to find good books is to read books that have been made into movies that I haven't seen yet, because everyone's always like "the book was wayyy better!" Then I get to watch the movie once I'm done and join those people haha

What finally worked for me was hooking up my library card to the Libby/OverDrive app. I get some of my best books from my “Librarians Recommend” section on there. And the books are delivered instantly! For free! So I can read a bunch at a time and not be afraid to drop any, like you said. My library and Libby support a reading habit I genuinely could not afford otherwise.

You're one of the first people who actually said "read several books at the same time", and do it similar to me. I'm able to differentiate between them because they are different formats (audiobook, ebook, and physical), as well as types (fiction, non-fiction, novels, short stories, poetry, essays).

Hey Craig, I'm getting back into reading too! Just finished 'Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep' (so good) and now reading 'The Shrinking Man'. I watched a truncated version of the movie so so many times as a kid on my Dad's projector, it's fun to revisit that world in book form now. All the best, Maeve in Ireland

Interesting. Of course 'Taft' stuck out but not going to lie, still had to get googly on the Nellie end of it. I've read only a few. Most recents (within a rolling year lol) were a book on Eisenhower, then a memoir by Chester Nez (through Judith Schiess) who served during world war 2 as a Navajo Code Talker. The Nazis literally had no idea how to decode Navajo. Fascinating the role these men played!

Abhishek Sangavikar well my friend, in the grand scheme of things, even with the current state of world wide discontent and virus, we have lived in an era where we the current denizens of earth (on average) have lived largely in a time of unparalleled peace and opportunity. That is true even with all clashes and conflicts combined in these very recent decades. If you are in and of America, I apologize that you may have personal trials that have rendered you unable to enjoy this era overall. I clearly have been through difficulties myself. I am blessed (thus far) to be a part of this great nation made up of many peoples. But as even Rome proved, nothing lasts forever. Man's voracious appetite for control and power will always result in kingdoms toppling kingdoms till the bitter end. Humanities "goodness" is not inherent regardless of what saving god we try to make from technology. Peace of mind and heart unto you my brother.

That's the best video I've seen from you. Great. Reading is great. Also try Goodreads. Also the power of serendipity. i.e. find the book that's waiting for you by wandering around. Just wander around looking and see what pops up, in a bookstore obviously. What about looking about the books in other people's homes. That's interesting too to do.

Feeling pretty good about myself because I discovered some of these tips on my own! I read a novel with my coffee in the morning (and in breaks) and a poetry book with tea before bed. Reading multiple books of different types has been the most helpful thing in reading more. Hell, I read 50 books in 2018 as part of the Goodreads challenge because of it. Also, Goodreads is a great place to find good books! I looked for my favourite books and read reviews and followed people with shared interests, turns out they have great taste!

I used to read a massive amount of books and loved it. I've found that as an adult I got away from it, mostly because I have so much to do. Enter: Audio Books! I honestly have an audio book on all of the time I'm not at work. Yes, I love the stories but I also find it relaxes me. It gives me something to focus on when my mind might wander to less positive things. I find myself accomplishing chores and tasks with ease because I'm absorbed in "my stories." If you have a library card, most libraries have a large selections of audio books online. Also, free trials of Audible are great. I've spent the last few months working my way through the Amelia Peabody series of humorous Egyptology novels. Try it, you'll like it. ❤

The "read something lighter" really helped me get back into reading - I started with a whodunnit that ended up being pretty enjoyable. Also, I think going in knowing there will be some sort of twist or genre-bending element (but not knowing what that will be) can help convince me to pick up a book in the first place.

“Have the next book ready before you finish the previous book”
Somehow this has the opposite effect on me. When I have finished a book, I’m far more likely to start (and then finish) a new book when I spend some time at a bookshop (trying to avoid people as best I can, of course) and buy one.
I think it has something to do with that new book being exactly the one I want to read at that moment.

How I read at least 2 books a week: no screens after 8 in the evening, always a good book by the bed and the same advice you give in this video: read several books at the same time then you can chose one depending on what you feel like reading. Right now I’m reading a Nora Roberts novel, ”Digital minimalism” by Cal Newport, a book about stress and a poetrybook. The first two is in english, because I like to challenge myself (I live in Sweden and english is my second language) and the last two are in swedish. One thing I belive is really important when it come to reading is to remember that ALL reading is good reading, if you like comic books go for it! The more you read the faster you read and it’s good to build a reading habit 📚🤩 and when I write reading I mean that in a wide sense, like listening to audiobooks as well! 15 minutes of reading (or listening to Someone read to you or an audiobook) each day for children give them the capacity to read a newspaper in full when they are 17 years old, research shows here in Sweden. And the point is that not everyone can read a newspaper and understand it in full nowadays, I don’t know how readinglevels are in the US though...
