As a Hawkeye fan, it is underwhelming to see them to lose to a team like Purdue or Northwestern relegating them to an 8-4 or 7-5 record every year. However, it does make you grateful for what you have as a fan compared to other programs like Nebraska or Tennessee who recycle through big-name head coaches desperately trying to find a stable culture. Iowa stuck with Ferentz because they know who they are and are secure about it. Yes, they aren't national contenders every year but they established an identity and it lead them to being competitive for over 20 years. I'm hoping we can break the mold and recreate some of the magic from the 2015 season and capitalize on the opportunity to win the B1G and get to the playoff. Although it would be weird to see Petras leading a playoff team lol.
I really think those two early season losses last year may have been a blessing in disguise, especially blowing that 17 point lead against N.W. I think they did some major soul searching because they've been a different team since those losses. They've won eight straight, just killing some good teams in the process, and haven't looked back. Whatever happened in the locker room after those two embarrassments has Iowa headed to possibly its best season in years. Go Hawks!
Thank you for saying what you have about Frentz, him and Jim Harbaugh runs the same style offense but and ESPN and Fox sports fond overr Harbaugh and call Frentz boring.
One thing this guy did not say is that one of the reasons the offensive did not put up big numbers is it is hard to do when you get interceptions, punt returns, fumble recovers which give excellent field position or touchdowns. If you start drives on your own 10 yard line, you have a good chance of gaining 90 yards. If you start on the opponents 10 yard line you can only gain 10 yards. if the defense scores you do not even get on the field. On top of this you have a great punter who average 51 yards a kick with a few of them inside the 20 yard line, keeping you in good field advantage when they kick the ball back. Point is it is hard to rack up big yardage when you are never on the field. Especially against ranked teams.
Before I finish this video, thank you, as a biased iowa fan, for even giving the Hawkeyes this publicity. Ferentz has done so much with the program and carried on the Fry legacy, it shows why iowa fans not only are coveted in bowl season, but make sure to acknowledge one another in some of the most random places. We love our Hawks.
He did miss one thing. Our special teams, specifically our punter. He's averaging like 50 yards a punt! We had ISU pinned on every series and won the field position aspect hands down. That can translate into a huge advantage when you have to force a team to march 80 yrds every time you punt.
I’m a Penn State fan. When Ohio State lost and I saw how good our defense is I got very excited but then I saw the Iowa Iowa State game…even when we win we lose
PSU/Iowa looks like the marquee game in the B1G this year. Hopefully Fox doesn't eff it up and put it at noon. This should be a prime time blackout game!
We actually play Maryland before Penn State, and while not as good as PSU, they are going to put up a good fight. Hopefully these next two FCS matches will hone in the offense and get some more playing time for backup defensive players.
From 2000 to present Kirk Ferentz is 11-16 against top 10 ranked opponents that's not bad for poedunk Iowa. Five top ten finishes at 8,8,8,7,&9. Also finishes at 20,25,15,&16. The year's they have 8 and 9 wins all their losses are by 8 points combined.
Remember the loss to Northwestern with TE's Hochenson and Fant on the team? Fant sat on the sidelines for 10 minutes while Northwestern came back in the second half. Now if I had two guys like that to throw to I would throw to them every other down. You decide.
Yeah, 2018 ....Remember someone named Fant not set against the Psu game. Hock was more under-rated because of Fant might of been because of Fant's daddy did a lot of crying. I'd throw to TJ all day long or let him make huge holes.
This defense is ELITE. The offense has to start putting up better numbers. The O-Line is so young and you can really tell. I'm hoping these next two games against Kent State and Colorado State help the O-Line gel. With young guys it can take some time for that to happen. Tyler Goodson needs to pick it up a bit too. Seems like Ivory Kelly-Martin looks more explosive this year than him.. idk, maybe I just had too high of expectations for Goodson. BUT, if this O-line gets it going, I think Goodson will really shine
As a Hawkeye fan... this team is super young, and nobody expected this particular team to be the best Kirk's ever had... Huge question marks on the offensive line, at QB and at WR. Defense is stout but possibly benefitting from some luck. Idk I'm not buying the hype, two games is too small of a sample size. The Big 10 West looks weak this year though so let's see after Penn State.
The offense usually takes a few games to settle in. The defense can operate on instinct early on, but it will be a little bit before the chemistry on the O line and between Petras and the receivers really comes together. I just hope it does before the PSU game...
Except in the last 6 yrs they've been 12-2, 8-5, 8-5, 9-4, 10-3 and 6-2 last season and what looks like it could be another good season this year, hopefully. Seems like improvement to me, also there's not really much wrong with doing what you said every 4-6 yrs given the program and the recruits that want to come to Iowa, I'll take that over those top tier teams any day of the week because when Iowa does have a good season its just all that much sweeter than if its something they are expected to accomplish every year like an Alabama team.
Okay there are so many things wrong with this….forewarning I’m a Hawkeyes fan but I’m also a realist. When it comes to the Hawkeyes and the big ten west, they are one of the best teams in one of the weakest conferences and the Hawkeyes always have a weak schedule for only playing maybe 1-3 ranked teams during their whole season. The Hawks are notorious for being good at beating average teams but as soon as they play a team such as Penn State, Ohio State and even Michigan State they struggle. They have never been better than average in the college polls and never will be because they don’t get the proper recruiting. Their defense looks great because of who they face. And like I said, this is coming from a Hawkeyes fan. I love the hawks but I also know that the hawks are never going to be better than average and part of that is having Kirk ferentz offense scheme of power rush and no pass…sorry to all of the other hawk fans but I think we can all agree. When it came to that rose bowl a couple years ago, we all knew they were going to lose. And they gave up 230 rushing yards in the first half to ONE GUY!!!!
It's kind of funny that so many people were pumping up IU and ISU and a lot of folks picked them to beat Iowa but as soon as Iowa beats them those teams were overrated, they laid an egg or some other excuse for why they lost etc... As a long time Iowa football fan though I am pretty used to Iowa being overlooked or disparaged around the country when in the grand scheme of things is one of the better programs in the country especially given the level of the recruits they bring in but when you factor in the number of Hawkeyes playing in national football its a bit of a travesty that more young football players don't want to come and play here, guess they'd rather wait for seasons to play at one of those top tier schools but it is what it is, Indiana has more 4 star recruits than Iowa does this season and they had what one decent season in decades lol.
Listened to a podcast “Washed Up Walkons” with former Iowa players Drake Kulick and Tyler Kluver… Iowa currently has the 6th most players on 53 man rosters. Up there with the likes of Alabama, LSU, Norte Dame… Blue chip programs. It speaks volumes to the amazing development and preparation guys are put through. #IowaEdge
Iowa is a fundamentally sound team year in and year out. The “experts” thought that if Iowa won one of the first two games this year, that would be good. Well, like usual, Iowa overachieved. Are they one of the top five teams, maybe, maybe not. But defensively speaking, yes, easily. If the offensive comes around, they are definitely a possible play off team. Also, special teams is such an important part of what they do. You overlooked that like many do. Don’t bet against them, they can beat anybody, especially when people think they can’t!
Even when Iowa does lose, it's always close. And the program, no matter how good or talented, has built a reputation as giant killers, particularly in Kinnick. Go Hawkeyes.
Mister Ceo do you know why Ohio St lost to Oregon? It wasn’t because they didn’t score enough points! The defensive plays man and they were out of position on several occasions. Oregon scored three TDS going left and no adjustment was made to stop it, It was coaching. Iowa plays a zone so they can all keep their eyes in the backfield. Keep the plays in front of them. Proper positioning is what gives Iowa the “luck” to jump those routes. But maybe your sorta right, maybe the other teams are just unlucky. So maybe there is luck in the fact that some coaches can’t adapt to the circumstances, and that’s lucky for Iowa.
I started working at the University of Iowa 1998 at the time Hayden fry with the coach of the Iowa Hawkeyes when Kirk Ferentz took over I was kind of skeptic there's going to be a good coach but he wind up being a very good coach I'm a Hawkeye for life go Hawks.
Not worried at all. Once this offense starts rolling . We will be scary dangerous ! A punter averaging almost 50 yards a game and pinning opponents inside the 10 . Top in interceptions and special teams . Defense that kicks ass.
Taylor, the punter, is averaging over 50 per punt. Shudak, the placekicker, would be 5/5 for FGs if not for one bad snap and shaky hold, and he has been booting the ball for touchbacks. Special teams is the best unit on this team. I look for Taylor and Shudak to be favorites to win the Guy and Groza this year.
@@blankname6629 the standards that the program has for its players is significantly higher than most. This leads to more talented skill position players avoiding the Hawkeye program. Even in years past the dismissal of such budding superstars like Derrel Johnson-Koulianos, Adam Robinson, Marcus Coker, and Brandon Wegher tells high end recruits that their bad personal life and substance use choices won't be tolerated. It's an unfortunate side effect of standards and consequences in NCAA football today but it does allow us to have a clean program and to be proud of it.
I’m a die hard Hawkeye fan, have been since I was born. Went to Iowa, my wife went to Iowa. Season ticket holder..etc. and I personally think they’re ranked too high. They’re a great team, but I think we’re getting ahead of ourselves. Petras has not been good, and they can’t rely purely on turnovers to win big games. Passing game and offense has got to get going.
1. turnovers are not luck they are forced 2. yes Iowa has had lower offense numbers but also vs Indiana they didn't need to open the playbook because that game was over 5 minutes into the game and against ISU they started in plus territory almost every drive
Dude, there are non-forced turnovers all the time. Especially in special teams where the punt return guy drops the ball many times with no one within 5 yards of him. Freaking Trindon Holliday at LSU in 2007 was the fastest guy in all of football, but fumbled the punt return for a turnover six times that year. It was rarely opponent forced, he just sucked at catching punts, but his speed was seen as worth the gamble to Les Miles I guess. I don’t know. I don’t think anyone knows what was going on in Les Miles head.
@@RevAlSharptonz If you think the iowa turnovers havent been earned you havent been watching the game. The only pick i would give you as luck was the tipped ball. all the other ones were positioning and understanding the game.
@@RevAlSharptonz I realize that but with the exception of the INT that just went through the receivers hands all the turnovers in this game were forced
This team has the chance to be a playoff contending team for sure. It's all going to come down to the offense getting in sync. The defense and special teams are amazing. Our punter, Tory Taylor, is an absolute weapon that has been very instrumental by pinning opponents deep in their own territory. Only time will tell but I'm hopeful they can find some rhythm on the offense and really show what they can do!
Iowa can drop to Penn State and still have a chance into the playoff. Obviously win and your in. Its a crazy world that with some chaos we could be seeing a 1/2 ranked Iowa going into Conference title week. Iowa has to get through Maryland before Penn State and as a Hawkeye that game scares me. The defense has so much upside if the offense gets its shit together, especially in the first half when iowa is still going to be aggressive instead of trying to preserve a lead, i dont see how they dont at least make it to indy out of the West.
In what world is Iowa beating ISU for the 6th time in a row their biggest victory since 2009. Any college football fan could tell you curb stomping a 5th ranked Ohio State as an unranked team in 2017 is potentially one of the biggest victories in not in recent history but in program history. Beating a team that is never a national contender when they turn the ball over more than they score is far from impressive. What a joke.
Not at all worried about the offense. 1) Iowa played two very good defenses in Indiana and ISU to start the year. 2) Iowa is breaking in two new tackles and lost two explosive WR's from last year's offense. The Colorado State and Kent State games will allow those positions to improve. 3) maybe most importantly as to the lackluster offensive numbers is the fact that Iowa jumped out to 28 and 17 point leads in the first two games. Following the same script Ferentz has used for over 20 years, the team took the foot off the gas, burning clock on offense and playing prevent defense the rest of those two games. Also, I don't think it is 100% accurate that the offense has only scored thanks to defense and special teams. While it is the case in a lot of their scores so far, they drove 65 yards for a TD taking the opening kick against Indiana, and had a 10 play, 70 yard TD drive before the half against Iowa State after a forced punt. Those were full-length drives you want to see from offenses and neither game from a turnover or big play special teams return. I agree with everything Cole said about the defense though. And Cole is right saying the offense needs to improve, but it is not as dire as one may think by just looking at the numbers.
TGood and the time have gotta be better if Iowa wants to grind it out like this. He cant be averaging 2 yards a carry and relying on Tory to do all the work, even though Tory is a monster.
Really didn't touch base on the best special teams in the country, the kicking game is unmatched!! Totally agree on the defense, although I am still wondering how the D line will pan out. The offense is awful, and has always been bad. We lack a true Offensive Coordinator and that is on KF for hiring his son, who lacks that skillset IMO. Just half an offense and this is truly a Top 5 team.
This hawks team is one of if not the best defensive team we have seen in years from any other program one of the best tight end schools under rated defensive backs and A God like o lineman almost every year
As an Iowa fan, let me tell you. Our Defense stacked always is a force, every year. Our O not so hot, and especially our quarterback. If we had a back up quarterback from Clemson, Georgia or Bama, we would be a National contender though. BUT! if our D can get 3-4 turnover again every game....who knows.
Hawkeye fan since I was a child, was a walk-on in one of Haden Fry's last years. So this comes from a place of love but the Hawkeyes will never get into the championship race until we start get better offensive (quarterback) recruiting/development. Everyone knows Ferenz and co can build a defense, it's Iowa's defining characteristic. But everytime Iowa has been toward the top of the polls at the end of a season, we've had a serviceable to good offense to go along with a good to great defense. It's just not possible to get 2 or 3 defensive scores a game, no matter how good you are, which means you're going to have a lot of close games, which makes losses much harder to avoid. This offense could come together, there were flashes vs Indiana but it's still very much up in the air Ferenz is a very good coach, you have to be to last as long as he has. But he's not a great coach because he's never made the extra step toward being a serious contender for the playoffs (or being ranked at the top at the end of a season, pre-playoffs). I dont expect a perennial top 5 team but I don't think a single run at the playoffs is asking too much. 1 great qb (Chuck Long) in 40 years is just not enough.
@@jeffreypierce1440 He still has some time to put it together, he has shown the ability and he's a red shirt junior, so he could certainly still become great. I'm just not sure about the coaching/training side, there's obviously no track record of putting out really good qbs. If Petras can get his accuracy up and cut down a few of the ints, he definitely has a high ceiling. Fortunately he's doing a lot of work on his own, hiring one of the top guys from the Manning Passing Academy this past spring. I'm very optimistic about him and am certainly hoping this is his and the Hawks year.
You really get a great description of letting the numbers tell the story with some opinion. Truthfully, CSU beat themselves more like we beat them. I look forward to your review of Kirk Ferentz.
Go Hawkeyes!! Lifelong Hawkeye here. Definitely need the offense to improve, particularly the passing production. Petras needs to work on his accuracy, his decision making when the pocket starts to collaspe and the entire receiving corp needs to make sure as few as possible dropped balls happen. The running game looked better with Goodson against Kent State. The defense against the passing attck of KS was a little weak at times, but certainly fixable.
Iowa has the capability of doing good, like everyone has seen, defense and special teams is getting the job done. However, offense needs to pick it up. It honestly is just spencer petras holding them back. That said, I believe they can improve drastically on offense. Like when CJ Beathard took over Iowa, everyone had their doubts at first due to his slow start... same with Nate Stanley, but they picked it up. Also, Iowa needs to start converting on 3rd downs and stop choking and clutch up when they need it. Iowa tends to let opponents linger around way too long and they find out real quick why they should never pull punches and keep throwing haymakers out. They may have a young O-Line, but thats never stopped Iowa. They have great leaders/coaches who know all about the O-Line so they will improve as the year goes on. It always does. Iowa just needs all their weapons to come together game in and game out.

Go Hawks!
Today is the Day before the BIG GAME vs PENN STATE -10-8-21
GO HAWKS, we can DO THIS! HAWKS!
I’m born and raised a Purdue fan and I have to say that Iowa fans are some of the best I interacted with
From a life-long Iowa State fan, I hope you win out. Sorry you didn't get our best effort, but maybe it would not have mattered.
As an Iowa boy I appreciate this video
Cole, please don't jinx us like you did in March Madness
The only team that runs hand in hand in and out of field
Thank you for standing up for Iowa!
Great video, and great points!
I have been waiting g for this season
Thank you for saying what you have about Frentz, him and Jim Harbaugh runs the same style offense but and ESPN and Fox sports fond overr Harbaugh and call Frentz boring.
They're dominating this year. I felt bad for Iowa State when they brought gameday to Ames. They were set up to fail.
hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahhahhahahahhahahahahahahhahahahahahahahahahhahahaha
As a life long Iowa fan, I'm NEVER sad when state loses.
Never sad when Iowa state gets walked at there own house
Pov: you're watching this after the Maryland game
Finally proud of being an Iowan
Before I finish this video, thank you, as a biased iowa fan, for even giving the Hawkeyes this publicity. Ferentz has done so much with the program and carried on the Fry legacy, it shows why iowa fans not only are coveted in bowl season, but make sure to acknowledge one another in some of the most random places. We love our Hawks.
Typically when I thought Iowa I thought wrestling
Only analyst to bring up the defenses Iowa faced and Iowa putting two veteran Qb1s on the bench
GO HAWKS!! SEE U IN IC OCT 9 unbeated against unbeated can't wait...I have die hard Penn family to going to be a amazing game I'll be there
Should be a fun game
PSU/Iowa looks like the marquee game in the B1G this year. Hopefully Fox doesn't eff it up and put it at noon. This should be a prime time blackout game!
@@RandyHawkeye it is the black and gold spirit game
@@richardnelson3227 ah, thanks. I stand corrected. Still hope it's a night game though.
We actually play Maryland before Penn State, and while not as good as PSU, they are going to put up a good fight. Hopefully these next two FCS matches will hone in the offense and get some more playing time for backup defensive players.
Well they didn’t! Let’s go Hawks keep this shit rolling! Time to smack penn state around at kinnick next week!!
10/10 Would beat Iowa State again
They're good but they've gotten pretty lucky with TO too.
Bingo. Let's see how the season shakes out.
Who’s here after they got obliterated by Purdue?
Me papi
Nobody thought iowa state would be good besides the ap poll
Remember the loss to Northwestern with TE's Hochenson and Fant on the team? Fant sat on the sidelines for 10 minutes while Northwestern came back in the second half. Now if I had two guys like that to throw to I would throw to them every other down. You decide.
Yeah, 2018 ....Remember someone named Fant not set against the Psu game. Hock was more under-rated because of Fant might of been because of Fant's daddy did a lot of crying. I'd throw to TJ all day long or let him make huge holes.
its oct 16th, we beat penn state in probably the most crazy iowa game i will ever see.
Hindsight is 20/20
This defense is ELITE. BUT, if this O-line gets it going, I think Goodson will really shine
let's see how they do against Clemson, Alabama, and Georgia, THEN WE'LL TALK. If Iowa even gets in the playoffs at all.
Wanna hell of a banger for a trivia question, name 3 Iowa Hawkeyes football head coaches.
Forest Evashevski
Hayden Fry and
Kirk Ferentz
As a Hawkeye fan... this team is super young, and nobody expected this particular team to be the best Kirk's ever had... Huge question marks on the offensive line, at QB and at WR. Defense is stout but possibly benefitting from some luck. Idk I'm not buying the hype, two games is too small of a sample size. The Big 10 West looks weak this year though so let's see after Penn State.
as an Iowa fan the offense the offense needs to improve vastly if we are to beat Penn State and Wisconsin.
The offense usually takes a few games to settle in. The defense can operate on instinct early on, but it will be a little bit before the chemistry on the O line and between Petras and the receivers really comes together. I just hope it does before the PSU game...
Purdue is Iowa kryptonite since 2017. Iowa is 1-3 since 2017 against Purdue
This is just Ferentz’s once “10-2/11-1/12-1 every 4-6 years so that I dont get fired” other than that its 7-5, 8-4, and 9-3 every year
Except in the last 6 yrs they've been 12-2, 8-5, 8-5, 9-4, 10-3 and 6-2 last season and what looks like it could be another good season this year, hopefully.
That's LIFE when you get 2 star kids. That's WHAT makes IOWA'S PROGRAM GREAT!
#IowaEdge
@@colinbrons7978 then I guess we'll see what happens. Hopefully another run of the table along with a Big 10 champion. Go Hawks!!!!
IOWA has always been talked about crappy because they play ball like it should be played. COACH UP YOUR PLAYERS.
@@joer7327 easier said than done, but I’m all for it! Getting past PSU and Wisconsin will be the biggest tests IMO
Maybe Iowa is not so not Giant themselves. I mean a giant killer ranked 5th in the country???
@@Yyyyyy5 Iowa gets by on luck
@@misterceo2168 yeah sure
Iowa city my home town always loved the Hawkeyes🥴💪🏿
BIG FACTS🖤💛🖤💛🖤💛🖤💛🖤GO HAWKS
Isn’t that the story year after year? Iowa never has an offense that gets rolling.
Blake Jameson wow, nailed it! That’s the first time I’ve heard anyone say that.
Who’s here after they beat penn state
GO HAWKS BABY! this can be there year.
I'm an Iowa alum and fan. Until they get an offense- they're a paper dragon IMO.
So your opinion is now shit. Iowa 23-20.
If we want to win the National Championship...we need to get Rick Vice for head coach
Iowa football is pretty much what I thought it was.
The #1 team in the country?
I’m a die hard Hawkeye fan, have been since I was born. Went to Iowa, my wife went to Iowa. Season ticket holder..etc. and I personally think they’re ranked too high. They’re a great team, but I think we’re getting ahead of ourselves. Petras has not been good, and they can’t rely purely on turnovers to win big games. Passing game and offense has got to get going.
Good for you that you are BOTH Hawkeyes. My wife went to Maryland and thank god they have not been good in a very long time.
I agree, ranked way to high!! Petras is not the qtr back they need, he always over throws the receiver's
Great vid. Thanks!
They did pretty good against Colorado State in Iowa City today
The most consistent at not winning conference championships or meaningful bowl games lol.
Keep in mind their defensive could become even better as the season goes on.
Heck yA
2017's 55-24 pounding of Ohio State was much bigger.
WOW...
HILLARIOUS WIN...
I CAN WATCH THAT GAME OVER AND OVER!
A PICK 6 TO START THE GAME.
URBAN MEYER IS A BAD PERSON!
Agreed --
1. turnovers are not luck they are forced 2. yes Iowa has had lower offense numbers but also vs Indiana they didn't need to open the playbook because that game was over 5 minutes into the game and against ISU they started in plus territory almost every drive
@@RevAlSharptonz Iowa practices turnovers, with expectations and goals for each practice. They force more than are luck
This.. did not age well
Iowa can drop to Penn State and still have a chance into the playoff.
Remember Iowa loses a lot of players early to the NFL. Just think how good some of their teams could have been if everyone stayed.
glad i picked this university...
Not surprised at all. Ferentz is a beast. One day I'd like to personally thank him for the gift he sent to my bucs! 🏴☠️

I think they figured out their offense.....
I’m a Penn State fan but I have nothing but respect for Iowa. I really hope they go 11-1 this year!!
Biggest win since 2009? Let’s not forget 2017 win against #3 Ohio State.
You nailed it completely.
Rate the Iowa Hawkeyes in the top ten and it's the kiss of death.
GO HAWKS!!!!
This hawks team is one of if not the best defensive team we have seen in years from any other program one of the best tight end schools under rated defensive backs and A God like o lineman almost every year
I can't wait till 2023 we have awesome 2022 recruits coming in.
Offense needs to get better if they are going to contend with the Ohio States of the world. Defense has held up their end.
Please don’t age bad. Please don’t age bad.
If the offense can get from bad to okay this is a SCARY team. This defense and even our special teams are both elite.
Yooo, my name is Cole, I’m from Iowa, and I’m also a Hawkeyes fan!!!
1 great qb (Chuck Long) in 40 years is just not enough.
petras was a high level recruit. he broke records in california high school ball.
Uh yeah, they got 173 yards of offense last Saturday. Woo Whoo!!
You really get a great description of letting the numbers tell the story with some opinion. Truthfully, CSU beat themselves more like we beat them. I look forward to your review of Kirk Ferentz.
would love to see iowa play alabama, maybe when pigs fly
Iowa coach is WAY WAY better than the talking barbie dolls on ESPN think he is.
A Kirk ferentz video will be good
schools biggest win since 2009?!?! we beat undefeated minnesota, ohio state, and michigan when they were ranked 3rd
Also the dude forgot iowa defense gives up 16.9 ppg over the last 6 years which leads the nation
This year's ISU win was NOT the biggest win since 2009. I could list at least 10 more that were bigger.
