That’s not really how psychic abilities work. Some are not “at will” and not all psychics are prognosticators. Controversially, some are said to communicate with the deceased, and that ability isn’t trying to predict whether or not one is going to attend a seminar. There are studies as legitimate as as they can be which maybe available to the public. I’m guessing that-like most academic organizations-that studies with abstracts and in depth analysis may be available for a fee, like any other focused research. The British Society for Psychical Research may have certain things available. A university parapsychology department may have papers in their archives. Research in this area usually means some deep diving and a small amount of spending to get certain informative papers one desires. Much of it is free, as well. Experiential details may have to be paid to obtain access. Etc.

can "A SKEPTIC LOOK AT..." become a regular feature? there's all kinds of spiritual, self-help, health/wellness, nutrition, business opportunities, and stuff that we could all get a good laugh at or maybe even learn something.
I used to do tarot and palm readings during free period in high school. 25 cents a reading. This was after I learned about cold reading from a book by Penn Jillette. It was EASY. I never said that anything I said was true, just that I had learned how to do it. Which is true, I read the instruction book that came with the tarot deck and another booklet on palmistry. So I knew how the basics. I made a few bucks a day. I actually had to put out a sign-up sheet so I could call the next person and students wouldn't argue about who went next. I never understood how I pulled that off. I was well known for being an atheist and a skeptic. I even included in every reading that this only means something is you believe it does. But I also spoke in a low, serious tone, kept my eyes low-lidded so it would be really noticeable when I let them go wide at certain points, moved my hands in a very deliberate way, etc. I was just mimicking psychics from movies. I know it was mostly just for fun and we're bored high school students, but a part of me wonders if some of them believed what I was saying.
Dear Emma, This week a linguist told me that it’s not “a myriad” it’s just “myriad” (think of it as a replacement for the word “many” in a sentence) and it blew my whole damn mind. So I had to share that and blow your whole damn mind. I have myriad reasons to hate how this sounds.
In the modern sense this is correct, but at one time it meant exactly 10,000 so it could take an article in English (I think ancient Greek had different rules)
I have learned two things today! The fact that it's just 'myriad' is now striking me as very familiar but this is clearly something I never fully took in or completely forgot :D
I got my psychic degree before the school even opened. They used their precognitive powers to know that I would attend, and I passed in the future with the skills I would learn. Now I lounge around all day using my telekinesis to serve drinks with little umbrellas to myself.
Anecdotal story but I could see my younger self getting really into this is if I had the money. I had undiagnosed OCD all through childhood and into adulthood and it led to a TON of "magical thinking". Belief in psychic powers, premonitions, manifesting, etc. It's what drove many of my compulsions, as these magical beliefs were incredibly distressing. Now I'm medicated and going on 2 years in therapy and I rarely have those thoughts anymore and am much happier as a result. The fact that these people are out there and could be potentially feeding people's mental illness (not to mention grief, etc) to turn a profit is disgusting. That said, I would love to see more videos on this topic. It is quite fascinating!

I didn't seek help until I was 32 and I felt really silly admitting all these beliefs to the therapist but I'm so glad I went through with it. OCD doesn't just look like hand washing and peculiarly organized spaces - sometimes it looks like "if I don't say goodbye to my friend this certain way then they will get in a car accident" or "this dream felt Different so it must be trying to warn me about something, I need to figure it out before it's too late". Take care of yourself and good luck!

It's also good to train your brain to focus on your surroundings. Like as long as you remember why you're doing it and not fall into excessive magical thinking it's good for creativity and noticing opportunities you might otherwise passby.

Hi Emma - I'm not all the way through the video yet, but I use to run a Witchcraft School. I focused on "psychic arts". I felt very sure that everything I was teaching was of value. I never came from a place of wanting to make money. In fact, there was a big 'fad' going around in my community that if you have THE PSYCHIC GIFT you should do readings for free - because the universe gave you a free gift with your birth! I bought into that for awhile....but time is time and time is $$. I started reading tarot cards when I was 13. It became a thing I only did for my friends and family. Later, when I found I could do "readings" for customers at a local metaphysical store, it was for sure about helping people. At least for me. As you might assume, I'm not a "psychic" anymore - that's another wonderful story. My school only had 4 of my friends taking tarot classes from me. We study meditation the most. I became a very good meditation guide. The Metaphysical spiritual landscape has changed so much. In the years of Trump, people were scared and worried about everything. My customers were beginning to bring the wildest conspiracy theories to the shop. I bounced when someone said, "Q, said to.....". I could see the way the customers were being taken advantage of from then on. It became so tedious to read for people - I was basically a really cheap counselor for my regulars. I read tarot cards much like you described - just seeing more into yourself and a situation - not telling the future. (I was right a lot -- for whatever that's worth). ***TLDR -- I ran a witchcraft and psychic school in 2009. I went to 3 online psychic schools and 2 in person schools. Clearly, not in that world anymore. Mostly because, people coming to these kinds of spiritualities, have very open minds, so much so, that I wondered why I was the only Skeptic in the bunch - and I was the one teaching.
As a Wiccan in a former life (ha), I got quite knowledgeable about tarot and only ever read for friends and family (no cold reading necessary). I absolutely believed in it and I would extrapolate the "story" of future events from the card context. Of course some people found it eerily accurate and I absolutely would advise major life changes. Luckily I don't think most people took it seriously even though i did, lol. Of course, I was also a self-deluded teenager at the time, so it was probably that too.
This is a great share - thank you. This is how I also started. I was reading from a place of love when I read for friends and family. It also helped that I already knew what was going on in their life where I could steer the card reading toward their situation. I feel like I was self-deluded too. I really believed in what I was doing. I told my sister she was pregnant when I was reading her cards....later we found out she was pregnant. So, it became affirming to me that I was doing the right thing for people. How things chang3 when you "wake up".
This is nostalgic for me, I used to do the same thing as a teenager, too! Though there was one time I cast stones for classmates I never interacted with beforehand--I accidentally upset a girl by reading about "trouble in her lovelife" a day after she broke up with her boyfriend 😨 oops. Considering how likely having relationship troubles is even if healthy relationships, i don't put any stock in it now, but I hope wherever she is she's happy! 😅
I used to work at The Arthur Findlay College of Psychic Science (I was a chef) it was fascinating. The people were lovely but obviously it's all nonscence.
"Paranatural" is used in the video game "Control," and it's a really cool concept. As you said, the combination of supernatural and paranomal. @@MrGrumblier they are synonyms in dictionary definitions for certain but they definitely have different uses in culture and practice. you might call your moms religious friend praying in tongues a "supernatural" thing, but if you called it paranormal, you would be implying she was possessed or that a ghost was present. then, there is the surface etymology of it. supernatural meaning "above nature" and paranormal meaning "beside what is normal", in the strictest definitions, paranormal things are simply unusual or difficult to explain, while supernatural things are beyond what should be possible. hope that helped clear things up!
Problem with the supernatural: Either it has an effect in the real universe, then it can be observed, studied and communicated. In short, you can apply the scientific method. Or it has no effect in the real universe, then it is indistinguishable from not existing.
What I love about Emma is The content presented in a truly captivating manner. Logical, with the perfect balance of quirkiness. One can listen to her hours upon hours, and never get disinterested. I wish my college professors had that much appeal. I would have achieved my PHD in record time, were that the case. Much respect for her.
Years ago I used to go to a Spiritualist Church with a friend of mine, (he was into it - I wasn't) and the coffee and cake was excellent - just felt that was worth pointing out.
I'd love to see more of this stuff, i love the history behind these kind of things especially the folklore. A colleague of mine took me to see a psychic once, they immediately cold read me and started spewing stereotypical stuff based on how i looked, they even said i like doing crossword puzzles because i keep a pen clipped to my pocket. I played along with it since it was a large group of people and didn't want to spoil it for others. The pen is a gift from a friend that's why i kept it with me.
Good on you for not being a grumpy buzzkill and ruining other people's fun. I look at group events like that in the same way I look at the Tarot thing, or i-ching, or the various "aesthetic" philosophies/religions. They can all be interesting and informative and useful ways of learning things about yourself (or your friends if they also like mucking around with getting their cards read), provided they're not being relied upon as a substitute for necessary counselling/mental health treatment by qualified professionals. And as long as they're not being used to scam people out of their money via false hope/telling them what they want to hear.
@@sixstringedthingexactly. I'll admit I do tarot but it's mostly to help me with problems where I need help to get another perspective. Especially since I don't really have people I can talk to about stuff. Big or small. I often think out loud amd talk to myself to sorta bounce ideas around and whatnot. The vagueness of the cards are what help. I don't really do fancy spreads. I just line them up and give each slot a way to "interpret" each card. I do also do "what to expect for my day/night" but I don't actually believe it, I just suck at rote memorization so this gives me chances to regularly use them so I can learn and remember the cards without over thinking and obsessing over my problems. 😆 I do have to say that when it comes to coin tosses, I'm a lot like Emma. If I'm all disappointed over the side it lands on, I know what I really wanted was the other one, if I'm fine either way it doesn't matter what side it lands on.

@cedarwaxwing3509 just to pitch in. A cult has it's own origin and is not built on any of the larger religions. A sect is built on one of those pesky God worshipping religions. A sect can eg be built on Christianity and Scientology is a cult. There are massive differences. Eg societal and structural.
💙😅 I tend to lean into “Hank’s Razor” for these forms of evidence. The size of the palm, for instance, is related to the genetic pool that they were studying. There is a heavy correlation between those specific pools and socioeconomic status. We know for sure that familial, genetic factors mixed with specific society, economic pools, leads to very specific presuppositions that you can make about that pool. This would explain any “positive evidence” about something like palm reading tests.
As a Buddhist, I get worried that people selling mindfulness courses are a rip off. There are various Buddhist monasteries around the UK and other western countries who will teach you to meditate free of charge (a donation is the normal courtesy but not expected). There are other Buddhist based meditation groups where they might charge for the hire of a sroom or tea and coffee. You don't have to be a Buddhist to participate But if you want to learn mindfulness, you should not be charged.

I find the idea of an unlicenced psychic so funny yet so interesting. What is the licensing process? Do I have to pay for malpractice insurance? What does psychic malpractice look like? Are essential oils considered performance enhancing drugs for a psychic? So many questions...
Even a promise to avoid doing harm or not exploiting the vulnerable would be a good start. Pretty vague admittedly, but people need protected from scam artists.

A few years ago, when I was deep into my spiritual phase (manic episode probably), I picked up tarot reading. I did a couple of reading mornings the local cafe and some other individual readings. I was REALLY good at it. Not because there's some inherent mystic properties, but because I'm a deeply perceptive person. I scared myself and stopped doing it, knowing the damage it could do. Over the years, my faith wained as I am an inherently skeptical individual. I genuinely believed in what I was doing and I genuinely thought I was helping. And I still think I was, by letting people talk about their issues. I employed some techniques I learnt in therapy. But I won't do it again in that capacity, if ever.
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was such a believer that even when Harry Houdini did a trick for him that he very clearly said was a trick, Doyle still said he was magic by the end.
And it ruined their friendship. Doyle is also a suspect in faking the famous Piltdown man as he was a close associate of the dude whose garden supposedly had the fraud. That whole era had all the weirdest drama.

It looks like at least a few of these lecturers have proper credentials. The "Decline of the White Witch" lecturer seems to be an academic in theology and has published papers while at Oxford and UCL. The Norse chap has his own website where you can book courses with him directly.

I got into whichcraft because one, I was escaping from a very controlled religious environment and was NOT looking to join a cult and two, it was pretty much “the poor person’s self help” and so, it was free from both of the constraints that held me back at the time. A lot of the things were old housewives tips (that work great, save you money and are better for the environment) and the environment is a BIG thing for certain groups/covens so you’re discouraged from consumerism and encouraged to find a more neutral way of practicing your craft, can’t get to a forest? Do it in local park, even one tree will do for a lack of accessibility. Do whatever speaks TO YOU I actually like my particular tarot deck for grounding and introspection, but that’s just a personal thing. I like pretty pictures. I enjoy art, so naturally I feel more drawn towards cards. Particularly sorting through them, I will admit to finding repetitive tasks extremely calming, but I don’t even like telling people what I see in the cards because it does end up relating to psychology a lot One thing that might actually need A WARNING and not against evil spirits or anything of that sort is meditation. In particular mindfulness and letting your mind wander freely. THIS IS KNOWN TO TRIGGER FLASHBACKS in certain individuals that are suffering from PTSD Otherwise the type of whichcraft that I ended up encountering and joining in on was a bit of an counter cultural movement that was to help empower the individual (even though it was mostly women, it wasn’t exclusionary) to become more in tune with themself. We are all a part of nature and equal to nature, we’re all divine beings and that’s why we should care about ourselves, each other and our environment. Even in the midst of-adulting is just so rough, best way to get infant poop out of a tie 🤔 it was, and is, a way to not get lost in the hustle and bustle of modern life and satisfy that longing for nature that at least some of us have. Go hug a tree. Literally, if you feel like it. Remember that you are a part of something, you are a part of nature. Not above it. These days there’s way more talk about climate change and overconsumption and the loss of ecodiversity, but back then it was still countercultural. I mean it’s pretty punk, or metal even, to buy second hand and customise Oh and a lot of us are still technically atheists, that really enjoy nature and philosophy with a dash of nostalgia and curiosity about the unknown, as well as “magic tricks” that end up being surprisingly based in psychology. For example, the visual representation of cutting ties with someone, or something, can make it feel more tangible. Or burning the past written on a piece of paper that you have really focused your energy into and then poof. Not cured from my PTSD but the relief can really be described as magical, when most days you just put a lid on your emotions and cover it with a laugh and a smile As for the question? White vinegar is really effective when cleaning in dealing with both stains as well as smells, if you have a cat, keeping a bowl of it where the fumes of the vinegar and urine mix can help neutralise the smell, and every good which needs a cat right? That live indoors because cars Also don’t mix baking soda and vinegar together, that’s when we get into the chemistry aspect of witchcraft, you don’t want to just go mixing things together that Do Not go together. Both are great for cleaning. Separately.

I find psychic stuff and the super natural very interesting. But much like my agnosticism in regards to religion, I always balk at the idea that someone has figured out the exact rules of the unknown aspects of the universe and will give you this insight as soon as you give them some cash.
I believe the supernatural exists only in people's imaginations. If you think you've experienced something supernatural,that doesn't mean that there isn't a rational/natural explanation. Often a coincidence can seem like a miracle. As theists often fail to realize, sometimes it's OK to say I don't know. Meanwhile, isn't Emma the best? Cute AND smart.😊❤❤❤

Fun Fact: For my fictional book about vampires in Victorian London, I had one character do a tarot reading, and I actually looked up how to do a tarot reading and what the various cards means and picked the cards at random and did a "proper reading" of them in and for the fictional situation, and it worked really well! Moral of the story: Tarot readings work just as well for fictional characters in fictional settings. =P

I do think you're spot on about specifically "mysticism as a career" appealing more to the middle class--but not necessarily for the mysticism aspect of it, just the fact that when you're not currently in a position of needing stable income (ie you've inherited wealth or your spouse is already covering your living expenses), you have the freedom to pursue more niche interests with the possibility that it MIGHT make you money eventually. Lots of people are going to be drawn to the woo of it all, but you have to be in a very particular kind of living situation to have the luxury of studying it in a (performatively) academic way.
Oh, they have been "tested" too....whatever that could possibly mean. Like a great many of Emma's topics I can only view them with someone as interesting as Emma.
I really like emma's view on tarrot, its exactly how I like use tarrot, sometimes i just need encouragement or "guidance" to do the things i deep down know i need. The cards that are drawn are not whats important, its individuals interpretation that reveals hidden truths.
I read the first book, then I read his Alera Codex. His steampunk book died for me the moment he introduced sapient cats. Ruined a perfectly interesting story with... cats.
Oh! I just glanced at the thumbnail, and unfortunately -- aww, who am I kidding! This may be the best title I expect to see all weekend!. At a glance, I thought the thumbnail said "A School for Psychos". Tempting as it would be to exclaim, "Sign me up!", I really have no ambition to be a psycho: I'd just like to stay awake more easily! Also, a thing I noticed towards the end of the video, it's really creepy that they're calling themselves a college, especially given that they're in south ken. Historical context: many universities in London are called colleges, because they used to be part of the university of London (colleges provide accommodation and some level of teaching facilities for these old, redbrick universities). Being in south Kensington, they're also right next to Imperial College London, which, unlike these guys, is actually a really high quality university and frequently hits the top 10 British unis for science, engineering and medicine. So it kinda feels like they're trying to create a link that doesn't exist. Maybe I'm thinking too much into it, but it's... Messed up.

Unfortunately, this year I'll be on the road for part of November, so I'm trying to get in 30 days of writing now. I have around 20k words, but I've just realized I got off on the wrong foot and need to go back and rewrite everything. Sigh. BTW, I have ghosts in mine, too.
Just throwing this out there: I just got to the section around 11:20 where you find them teaching about the connection between the hands and the brain. I was a dancer and in college we had a professor who taught us some connection points in your feet/hands that are associated with different parts of the body. This is a very big part of eastern medicinal practices, like certain kinds of acupuncture! In modern times they have been able to prove these connections exist by tracing electric channels in the body. Obviously the extent to which these channels affect the body or can be manipulated is not directly known but there is a real connection between parts of your body and other major muscle groups! One easy, common example is squeezing the muscle between your thumb and your pointer finger to help relieve headaches. I have my doubts about the learning you’d receive on this at the psychic online school but you never know, there may be a basis for at least some of what they teach 😂
I think the point I was trying to make that may not have been clearly expressed is that these connections DO exist, but I’m sure that there is going to be a lot of pseudoscience and general bullshit sprinkled in with things that do actually exist and mixing them together so that it all ends up being fake sounding. Like many pseudoscientific beliefs like YEC, they learn just enough to make themselves sound smart and then pile in a bunch of dogma and try to bamboozle you into believing it’s all true because one part has a footing in reality.
I was a Chinese Medicine student; specifically acupuncture. There is really only acupuncture and 'dry needling'. Dry needling is people such as physios getting a certificate from a weekend course in acupuncture taught by someone who also only knows dry needling i.e. the local points only. In otherwords, they have no knowledge of more than the superficial aspect of acupuncture. They don't understand the connections, or Chinese Medicine at all. So they don't really know what they are working with. Local points are still beneficial. Contrary to popular belief, Chinese Medicine theory, acupuncture and herbs have been studied, and written about for 3500 years. Some of those 3000 year old books are available in print. So 'alternative medicine' is deliberately minimising. Especially as Western treatments, including some pharmaceuticals, have been inspired by Chinese Medicine. The point you described to relieve headaches (He Gu) is an interesting and useful point in many ways. It does many things, especially in conjunction with other points. The meridian it's on travels up to the sides of the head. As part of the degree, we learnt 3 years of Western medicine, too. Different paradigms, similar conclusions, but more patterns, explanations, and easily predicted symptoms in Chinese Medicine. Both medicines have a lot of value.
I think Tarot can be a very personal, individual, meditative practice for sorting through what kinds of thoughts are on your mind and under your subconscious. I also think it's a very neat way to randomise character traits and narrative beats in a TTRPG setting.
Contrary to what the master palmer claims, saying that palmistry is a word with ancient Greek roots does not mean that the ancient Greeks practiced palmistry.

You talking about the psychic studies classes reminded me of the story about the guy taking Egyptian history as a major. He figured out mid way through that there were no jobs for anybody who specializes in Egyptian History except for Egyptian history teachers. This would make Psychic studies less of a scam than Egyptian history because you can at least get a job afterwards.
I am from Bulgaria, few years ago there was a whole private "university" that teaches psychics/mediums in my country and even issues diplomas. I think it was a short lived enterprise, or it may exist still , haven't heard anything about it in years
As someone who also had a hand in writing I wish you the best for your endeavors, sure I even never finished my first drafts since I realized I clearly lack originality and have a dull writing style so I tabled the project for now ( or should I say I abandoned it?!) That’s not really how psychic abilities work. Some are not “at will” and not all psychics are prognosticators.
Controversially, some are said to communicate with the deceased, and that ability isn’t trying to predict whether or not one is going to attend a seminar.
There are studies as legitimate as as they can be which maybe available to the public. I’m guessing that-like most academic organizations-that studies with abstracts and in depth analysis may be available for a fee, like any other focused research.
The British Society for Psychical Research may have certain things available. A university parapsychology department may have papers in their archives.
Research in this area usually means some deep diving and a small amount of spending to get certain informative papers one desires.
Much of it is free, as well. Experiential details may have to be paid to obtain access.

I read Sceptic as Septic for a second and went "that's a little harsh".
I used to do tarot and palm readings during free period in high school. 25 cents a reading. This was after I learned about cold reading from a book by Penn Jillette.
It was EASY. I never said that anything I said was true, just that I had learned how to do it. Which is true, I read the instruction book that came with the tarot deck and another booklet on palmistry. So I knew how the basics.
I made a few bucks a day. I actually had to put out a sign-up sheet so I could call the next person and students wouldn't argue about who went next.
I never understood how I pulled that off. I was well known for being an atheist and a skeptic. I even included in every reading that this only means something is you believe it does. But I also spoke in a low, serious tone, kept my eyes low-lidded so it would be really noticeable when I let them go wide at certain points, moved my hands in a very deliberate way, etc. I was just mimicking psychics from movies.
I know it was mostly just for fun and we're bored high school students, but a part of me wonders if some of them believed what I was saying.

Anecdotal story but I could see my younger self getting really into this is if I had the money. I had undiagnosed OCD all through childhood and into adulthood and it led to a TON of "magical thinking". Belief in psychic powers, premonitions, manifesting, etc. It's what drove many of my compulsions, as these magical beliefs were incredibly distressing. Now I'm medicated and going on 2 years in therapy and I rarely have those thoughts anymore and am much happier as a result. The fact that these people are out there and could be potentially feeding people's mental illness (not to mention grief, etc) to turn a profit is disgusting. That said, I would love to see more videos on this topic. It is quite fascinating!

I didn't seek help until I was 32 and I felt really silly admitting all these beliefs to the therapist but I'm so glad I went through with it. OCD doesn't just look like hand washing and peculiarly organized spaces - sometimes it looks like "if I don't say goodbye to my friend this certain way then they will get in a car accident" or "this dream felt Different so it must be trying to warn me about something, I need to figure it out before it's too late". Take care of yourself and good luck!

Hi Emma - I'm not all the way through the video yet, but I use to run a Witchcraft School. I focused on "psychic arts". I felt very sure that everything I was teaching was of value. I never came from a place of wanting to make money. In fact, there was a big 'fad' going around in my community that if you have THE PSYCHIC GIFT you should do readings for free - because the universe gave you a free gift with your birth! I bought into that for awhile....but time is time and time is $$. I started reading tarot cards when I was 13. It became a thing I only did for my friends and family. Later, when I found I could do "readings" for customers at a local metaphysical store, it was for sure about helping people. At least for me. As you might assume, I'm not a "psychic" anymore - that's another wonderful story. My school only had 4 of my friends taking tarot classes from me. We study meditation the most. I became a very good meditation guide. The Metaphysical spiritual landscape has changed so much. In the years of Trump, people were scared and worried about everything. My customers were beginning to bring the wildest conspiracy theories to the shop. I bounced when someone said, "Q, said to.....". I could see the way the customers were being taken advantage of from then on. It became so tedious to read for people - I was basically a really cheap counselor for my regulars. I read tarot cards much like you described - just seeing more into yourself and a situation - not telling the future. (I was right a lot -- for whatever that's worth).
***TLDR -- I ran a witchcraft and psychic school in 2009. I went to 3 online psychic schools and 2 in person schools. Clearly, not in that world anymore. Mostly because, people coming to these kinds of spiritualities, have very open minds, so much so, that I wondered why I was the only Skeptic in the bunch - and I was the one teaching.

As a Wiccan in a former life (ha), I got quite knowledgeable about tarot and only ever read for friends and family (no cold reading necessary). I absolutely believed in it and I would extrapolate the "story" of future events from the card context. Of course some people found it eerily accurate and I absolutely would advise major life changes. Luckily I don't think most people took it seriously even though i did, lol. Of course, I was also a self-deluded teenager at the time, so it was probably that too.
This is a great share - thank you. This is how I also started. I was reading from a place of love when I read for friends and family. It also helped that I already knew what was going on in their life where I could steer the card reading toward their situation. I feel like I was self-deluded too. I really believed in what I was doing. I told my sister she was pregnant when I was reading her cards....later we found out she was pregnant. So, it became affirming to me that I was doing the right thing for people. How things chang3 when you "wake up".
This is nostalgic for me, I used to do the same thing as a teenager, too! Though there was one time I cast stones for classmates I never interacted with beforehand--I accidentally upset a girl by reading about "trouble in her lovelife" a day after she broke up with her boyfriend 😨 oops.
Considering how likely having relationship troubles is even if healthy relationships, i don't put any stock in it now, but I hope wherever she is she's happy! 😅

but they definitely have different uses in culture and practice. you might call your moms religious friend praying in tongues a "supernatural" thing, but if you called it paranormal, you would be implying she was possessed or that a ghost was present.
then, there is the surface etymology of it. supernatural meaning "above nature" and paranormal meaning "beside what is normal", in the strictest definitions, paranormal things are simply unusual or difficult to explain, while supernatural things are beyond what should be possible.

You are definitely NOT overly skeptical. This type of "information" should be approached with absolute skepticism at best.
What I love about Emma is The content presented in a truly captivating manner. Logical, with the perfect balance of quirkiness. One can listen to her hours upon hours, and never get disinterested. I wish my college professors had that much appeal. I would have achieved my PHD in record time, were that the case. Much respect for her.

Years ago I used to go to a Spiritualist Church with a friend of mine, (he was into it - I wasn't) and the coffee and cake was excellent - just felt that was worth pointing out.
I'd love to see more of this stuff, i love the history behind these kind of things especially the folklore.
A colleague of mine took me to see a psychic once, they immediately cold read me and started spewing stereotypical stuff based on how i looked, they even said i like doing crossword puzzles because i keep a pen clipped to my pocket. I played along with it since it was a large group of people and didn't want to spoil it for others.
The pen is a gift from a friend that's why i kept it with me.

Good on you for not being a grumpy buzzkill and ruining other people's fun. I look at group events like that in the same way I look at the Tarot thing, or i-ching, or the various "aesthetic" philosophies/religions. They can all be interesting and informative and useful ways of learning things about yourself (or your friends if they also like mucking around with getting their cards read), provided they're not being relied upon as a substitute for necessary counselling/mental health treatment by qualified professionals. And as long as they're not being used to scam people out of their money via false hope/telling them what they want to hear.
@@sixstringedthingexactly. I'll admit I do tarot but it's mostly to help me with problems where I need help to get another perspective. Especially since I don't really have people I can talk to about stuff. Big or small. I often think out loud amd talk to myself to sorta bounce ideas around and whatnot. The vagueness of the cards are what help. I don't really do fancy spreads. I just line them up and give each slot a way to "interpret" each card. I do also do "what to expect for my day/night" but I don't actually believe it, I just suck at rote memorization so this gives me chances to regularly use them so I can learn and remember the cards without over thinking and obsessing over my problems. 😆

I tend to lean into “Hank’s Razor” for these forms of evidence. The size of the palm, for instance, is related to the genetic pool that they were studying. There is a heavy correlation between those specific pools and socioeconomic status. We know for sure that familial, genetic factors mixed with specific society, economic pools, leads to very specific presuppositions that you can make about that pool.
This would explain any “positive evidence” about something like palm reading tests.
I was going to go to a psychic fair in my local area. It was cancelled, owing to unforeseen circumstances.
As a Buddhist, I get worried that people selling mindfulness courses are a rip off. There are various Buddhist monasteries around the UK and other western countries who will teach you to meditate free of charge (a donation is the normal courtesy but not expected). There are other Buddhist based meditation groups where they might charge for the hire of a sroom or tea and coffee. You don't have to be a Buddhist to participate But if you want to learn mindfulness, you should not be charged.
In novel writing, the first three-quarters takes ninety percent of the time.
Then the last quarter involves a total rewrite and ends up creating whole new worlds of time required.

A few years ago, when I was deep into my spiritual phase (manic episode probably), I picked up tarot reading. I did a couple of reading mornings the local cafe and some other individual readings. I was REALLY good at it. Not because there's some inherent mystic properties, but because I'm a deeply perceptive person. I scared myself and stopped doing it, knowing the damage it could do. Over the years, my faith wained as I am an inherently skeptical individual. I genuinely believed in what I was doing and I genuinely thought I was helping. And I still think I was, by letting people talk about their issues. I employed some techniques I learnt in therapy.
But I won't do it again in that capacity, if ever.
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was such a believer that even when Harry Houdini did a trick for him that he very clearly said was a trick, Doyle still said he was magic by the end.
And it ruined their friendship. Doyle is also a suspect in faking the famous Piltdown man as he was a close associate of the dude whose garden supposedly had the fraud.
That whole era had all the weirdest drama.

It looks like at least a few of these lecturers have proper credentials. The "Decline of the White Witch" lecturer seems to be an academic in theology and has published papers while at Oxford and UCL. The Norse chap has his own website where you can book courses with him directly.

I got into whichcraft because one, I was escaping from a very controlled religious environment and was NOT looking to join a cult and two, it was pretty much “the poor person’s self help” and so, it was free from both of the constraints that held me back at the time. A lot of the things were old housewives tips (that work great, save you money and are better for the environment) and the environment is a BIG thing for certain groups/covens so you’re discouraged from consumerism and encouraged to find a more neutral way of practicing your craft, can’t get to a forest? Do it in local park, even one tree will do for a lack of accessibility. Do whatever speaks TO YOU
I actually like my particular tarot deck for grounding and introspection, but that’s just a personal thing. I like pretty pictures. I enjoy art, so naturally I feel more drawn towards cards. Particularly sorting through them, I will admit to finding repetitive tasks extremely calming, but I don’t even like telling people what I see in the cards because it does end up relating to psychology a lot
One thing that might actually need A WARNING and not against evil spirits or anything of that sort is meditation. In particular mindfulness and letting your mind wander freely. THIS IS KNOWN TO TRIGGER FLASHBACKS in certain individuals that are suffering from PTSD
Otherwise the type of whichcraft that I ended up encountering and joining in on was a bit of an counter cultural movement that was to help empower the individual (even though it was mostly women, it wasn’t exclusionary) to become more in tune with themself. We are all a part of nature and equal to nature, we’re all divine beings and that’s why we should care about ourselves, each other and our environment. Even in the midst of-adulting is just so rough, best way to get infant poop out of a tie 🤔 it was, and is, a way to not get lost in the hustle and bustle of modern life and satisfy that longing for nature that at least some of us have. Go hug a tree. Literally, if you feel like it. Remember that you are a part of something, you are a part of nature. Not above it. These days there’s way more talk about climate change and overconsumption and the loss of ecodiversity, but back then it was still countercultural. I mean it’s pretty punk, or metal even, to buy second hand and customise
Oh and a lot of us are still technically atheists, that really enjoy nature and philosophy with a dash of nostalgia and curiosity about the unknown, as well as “magic tricks” that end up being surprisingly based in psychology. For example, the visual representation of cutting ties with someone, or something, can make it feel more tangible. Or burning the past written on a piece of paper that you have really focused your energy into and then poof. Not cured from my PTSD but the relief can really be described as magical, when most days you just put a lid on your emotions and cover it with a laugh and a smile

I find psychic stuff and the super natural very interesting. But much like my agnosticism in regards to religion, I always balk at the idea that someone has figured out the exact rules of the unknown aspects of the universe and will give you this insight as soon as you give them some cash.

Fun Fact: For my fictional book about vampires in Victorian London, I had one character do a tarot reading, and I actually looked up how to do a tarot reading and what the various cards means and picked the cards at random and did a "proper reading" of them in and for the fictional situation, and it worked really well! Moral of the story: Tarot readings work just as well for fictional characters in fictional settings. =P

I do think you're spot on about specifically "mysticism as a career" appealing more to the middle class--but not necessarily for the mysticism aspect of it, just the fact that when you're not currently in a position of needing stable income (ie you've inherited wealth or your spouse is already covering your living expenses), you have the freedom to pursue more niche interests with the possibility that it MIGHT make you money eventually. Lots of people are going to be drawn to the woo of it all, but you have to be in a very particular kind of living situation to have the luxury of studying it in a (performatively) academic way.
Oh, they have been "tested" too....whatever that could possibly mean. Like a great many of Emma's topics I can only view them with someone as interesting as Emma.
I really like emma's view on tarrot, its exactly how I like use tarrot, sometimes i just need encouragement or "guidance" to do the things i deep down know i need. The cards that are drawn are not whats important, its individuals interpretation that reveals hidden truths.

Also, a thing I noticed towards the end of the video, it's really creepy that they're calling themselves a college, especially given that they're in south ken.
Historical context: many universities in London are called colleges, because they used to be part of the university of London (colleges provide accommodation and some level of teaching facilities for these old, redbrick universities).
Being in south Kensington, they're also right next to Imperial College London, which, unlike these guys, is actually a really high quality university and frequently hits the top 10 British unis for science, engineering and medicine.
So it kinda feels like they're trying to create a link that doesn't exist. Maybe I'm thinking too much into it, but it's... Messed up.

Just throwing this out there:
I just got to the section around 11:20 where you find them teaching about the connection between the hands and the brain.
I was a dancer and in college we had a professor who taught us some connection points in your feet/hands that are associated with different parts of the body.
This is a very big part of eastern medicinal practices, like certain kinds of acupuncture! In modern times they have been able to prove these connections exist by tracing electric channels in the body.
Obviously the extent to which these channels affect the body or can be manipulated is not directly known but there is a real connection between parts of your body and other major muscle groups!
One easy, common example is squeezing the muscle between your thumb and your pointer finger to help relieve headaches.
I have my doubts about the learning you’d receive on this at the psychic online school but you never know, there may be a basis for at least some of what they teach 😂
I think the point I was trying to make that may not have been clearly expressed is that these connections DO exist, but I’m sure that there is going to be a lot of pseudoscience and general bullshit sprinkled in with things that do actually exist and mixing them together so that it all ends up being fake sounding.
Like many pseudoscientific beliefs like YEC, they learn just enough to make themselves sound smart and then pile in a bunch of dogma and try to bamboozle you into believing it’s all true because one part has a footing in reality.

I was a Chinese Medicine student; specifically acupuncture. There is really only acupuncture and 'dry needling'. Dry needling is people such as physios getting a certificate from a weekend course in acupuncture taught by someone who also only knows dry needling i.e. the local points only. In otherwords, they have no knowledge of more than the superficial aspect of acupuncture. They don't understand the connections, or Chinese Medicine at all. So they don't really know what they are working with. Local points are still beneficial.
Contrary to popular belief, Chinese Medicine theory, acupuncture and herbs have been studied, and written about for 3500 years. Some of those 3000 year old books are available in print. So 'alternative medicine' is deliberately minimising. Especially as Western treatments, including some pharmaceuticals, have been inspired by Chinese Medicine.
The point you described to relieve headaches (He Gu) is an interesting and useful point in many ways. It does many things, especially in conjunction with other points. The meridian it's on travels up to the sides of the head.
As part of the degree, we learnt 3 years of Western medicine, too. Different paradigms, similar conclusions, but more patterns, explanations, and easily predicted symptoms in Chinese Medicine. Both medicines have a lot of value.
I think Tarot can be a very personal, individual, meditative practice for sorting through what kinds of thoughts are on your mind and under your subconscious.
I also think it's a very neat way to randomise character traits and narrative beats in a TTRPG setting.

You talking about the psychic studies classes reminded me of the story about the guy taking Egyptian history as a major. He figured out mid way through that there were no jobs for anybody who specializes in Egyptian History except for Egyptian history teachers. This would make Psychic studies less of a scam than Egyptian history because you can at least get a job afterwards.
I am from Bulgaria, few years ago there was a whole private "university" that teaches psychics/mediums in my country and even issues diplomas. I think it was a short lived enterprise, or it may exist still , haven't heard anything about it in years
I'd like to see you delve further into this, but not through paying them.

As someone who also had a hand in writing I wish you the best for your endeavors, sure I even never finished my first drafts since I realized I clearly lack originality and have a dull writing style so I tabled the project for now ( or should I say I abandoned it?!) Wish you productive writing phases and a steady flow of ideas
I don't know if you should give up... look at Colleen Hoover 😂 There is a lot of bad writing that slips through and becomes a hit.
My problem is purely on my side, I just want to feel good about my output but if I don't think it'll turn out great I don't see a good point to spend more time on it ... But maybe I am to harsh to myself at that point, another problem I literally went just from story idea to writing without looking into how to structure things or similar helpfully tips which might be good enough for short stories but for the scale I have in mind I need a bit more flashed out frame than the idea itself
So yeah let that simmer a bit for a bit, looking up some writer's guides for story development and go from there

I would donate to a fundraiser for you to take one of The College of Psychic Studies courses if you do a review once complete. I think it would be interesting to know more specifics about the teaching methodology and to compare it with, as you said, other online and University courses in different fields of study (obviously).
I came up with the same coin flip decision process as well and taught it to my kids. First time one of them did it, after the coin flipped, he got this pained look on his face and I was like, "Well, choose the other one, then." And his face brightened. It's a brilliant way to make decisions.
