This, THIS. This is how a RUclips video reviewing a game SHOULD BE. Not patronizing, straight to the point. This is a great video! Also I love this game!
I think the flashing donut works as the one that's farthest away from where you are. Bomb Jack had that same mechanic too. But love the game since it was a freebie on the Evercade one month. Only nit pick I have is the music sounds like an over powered NES game, rather than an Arcade title.
6:12 The music for this game was done by Sean Bialo, and I agree that music slaps. I also suggest listening to the Chiki's Chase OST if you liked this one a lot.
Donut Dodo and Annalynn are the gold standards of indie arcade games! If you'd like to play another one, I made a game called Super Spy Raccoon. It's like if Donkey Kong was a spy themed stealth game. Oh Mappy is another great one you should check out! Great video
I recall seeing this game and thought it looked neat when i was just browsing the eshop Cool to see that the game is pretty rad as i was imagining haha!
I got Donut Dodo about 3 years ago on Steam, and it was my 3rd game that I bought (1st was Terror Of Hemasaurus, 2nd was Vampire Survivors, and the 4th one afterwards was Galatican). As a huge fan of early 1980s arcade games, i love this game a lot, and it runs smoothly on a Windows 10 laptop computer. 🍩🦤
While this is far from the first game to attempt to copy classic Donkey Kong and modernize it, it is one that redefines it while getting the esthetics just right. It even captures the bold colour palette of those obscure Nintendo arcade games from the early 80s, which captures the authenticity of those games brilliantly without feeling like just another obscure copycat of another more popular game, like what Nintendo did with the likes of Space Invaders or Breakout back in the day.
I feel like while the rng feels good for getting several combo donuts in a row, doesn’t that betray the nature of score attacking arcade games like donkey Kong? So much if the nuance in people developing strategies for it come from subtly manipulating the game to create more point farming opportunities. From what you’re describing and showing it looks like my time bonus is entirely dependent on how the game feels. Though if the gane is endless and has no kill screen I guess that aspect doesn’t matter… but then, just surviving is more beneficial than going for max combo anyway.
Oh, actually original Donkey Kong not country! Glad i clicked now. I'd play this. I dont like any of the country games. I feel like the only person in the world who doesn't.
It's easy to perfect a genre 40 years later, when you aren't being forced to write the game code on grains of rice and draw pixel art by arranging lightbulbs on a grid, and taking the grid alignments to write those on another grain of rice, and make sure the machine that barely has more processing power than a toilet displays and runs everything correctly. Oh and you're also doing this for the equivalent of 30 dollars a week, working twelve hour days and 6 day weeks. When you don't have to worry about losing your job, and don't have to worry about making rent payments, and when you have tools and hardware that make the equipment the ancients had look like stones and chisels, it's a lot easier to supercede anything they made. Donkey Kong kinda sucks, but that's literally the best game you could make on that hardware, and none ever has and ever will make anything better for the same machine.
How are the ladders broken? The music doesn't quite fit the rest of the asesthetic, sounding more like a late-'80s NES game than an early-'80s arcade game, but I don't think that makes it not worth playing at all. It's a very fun arcade game.
Really enjoyed this video and your commentary on the game! Which I've also never heard of before, was wondering if you were to pursue these kind of videos would you consider getting a thumbnail artist? I'm currently looking for work myself and would love to work with you given the opportunity if there's any means to contact you and share my portfolio!
Unfortunately I don't have the funds for thumbnail art right now, but if the channel ever becomes profitable I will let you know! I looked you up and saw your stuff on Newgrounds, you're really good and totally a style I could see using for the channel's thumbnails some day!
Fun fact: there’s actually an arcade version named “Donut Dodo Do” that actually has an exclusive stage and 2 player mode!
And the update will never come to the home version because Exa Arcadia are scumbags

Immediately thought of Bomb Jack
Everywhere I go, I see Larry.
@@Geferulf_TAS And yet despite still being very much active on RUclips, I haven't seen a video from him in a long time.
that's great
Bomb Jack doesn't select the furtherest bomb from where you are; it follows a fixed sequence.
This is a great game. The developer's follow-up title, "Cash Cow DX", is excellent too!
I love that one of the enemies is a toilet

Yeah the music is sweet! I saw they also made the music in Penny's Big Breakaway. Definetly gonna be giving Chiki's Chase a listen!
Donut Dodo mentioned
So it's like Donkey Kong combined with Mappy. Sounds cool!
Glad this showed up in my recommended. Always on the lookout for modern takes on single-screen arcade games.
Really want to pick up this title and try it out. Looks like a lot of fun.
OST reminds me of Mordecai and Rigby in 8 bit land lol
I imagine the dodo repeating, "mine" in the voice of the Finding Nemo seagulls
Getting very big Analynn energy from this game
Didn’t know about that game and just looked it up, it looks really cool!
Donut Dodo is more solid than Annalynn.
I love this game. It is HARD! And it needs an update with new levels, but it's awesome!

Super Spy Racoon looks sick! I've never seen it before but it looks right up my alley, thanks for the recommendation!
Ohhhh man Donut Dodo is so underappreciated, this video is a really good showcase of the entire game!
As someone who has played all 4 games mentioned, I may check this one out.❤
Part of a trilogy of independent games.
There's a third part on its way
@cosmicwartoad2587 tell me more about this trilogy!
@@NervousFlea There's a third one out on 5th febuary this year on steam called Looney Landers by the same studio and I've got it on wishlist.
@@cosmicwartoad2587 nice! What's the other game in the trilogy?

Well this video has certainly earned you my sub. Cheers!
Donut dodo Island!
This reminds me of Donkey Kong 1 and 2 and Popeye for the NES. It looks awesome.
Thinking of getting this game. The OST is so 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

I don’t ever want to see Donald trumps face again thanks
This isn't terrible but the ladder mechanics is broken and the music doesn't match the play style. Not really worth playing imo
