It’s no fun paying extra fees but if the seats with oversized baggage area are full and you really want to board, you can just bring on your oversized bags and pay ¥1,000 as an oversized bag fee.

@@japanunravelled never tried this and never seen it. On JR’s website, they say that the conductor would designate a place to store the baggage. It makes me wonder if they have enough space to accommodate everyone if the train was full and every passenger on board brought along two 250 cm bags.

Traveling with a family of four, this has been very helpful but my overthinking brain has me concerned that if we book the end seats to get that extra storage someone may use the space behind the seats before we can.
For example, on planes people will use any and everywhere they can, without thinking.
I just want to avoid any awkward situations. 😊

I have a jr pass for an upcoming trip and bought the green car pass. Some trains give you the option of “green car with luggage space” AND “green car with luggage compartment”. I have this on the Hikari from Hiroshima. What is the actual difference when selecting seats?

    • @japanunravelled

Pretty much the same as shown in the video: space = end of car, compartment = shelf in the deck area.

Hi, I just measured only A+B+C (66H+30W+43L=139cm) or must I count all the dimensions of the luggage ie multiple A,B,Cs ? In this case, is my luggage oversized ? I'm so confused. Please help advise.

Im going to Japan this late May 2024 and i will be buying/book hokuriku arch pass today.
Can i still reserved the seat & luggage at the same day i will be using it?
And i will be going to Osaka using Hokuriku arch pass, and there's transit using regular trains, can regular train bring an oversized luggage & how to book it? (Sorry for my bad english)

Yes and yes. Regular trains don't have this system, but it's best to book seats at the ends of cars too because they have the most luggage space. Have fun!
