Good on Burton to do right by Selick by being a producer on his next project, James and The Giant Peach, as a way of thanks for taking on those duties. Also ironic how they put it on the Touchstone banner for worries it might be too much for their reputation and now here we are today and Disney now proudly calls it "A Disney Film".

    • @kevincooper1982

Disney are like those actors who claim to be ashamed of a film they starred in but then years later when they discover the film has grown a cult following, then suddenly they change their tune and tslk about how proud they are to have been a part of it 🙄

@@kevincooper1982 you gotta understand, times were different back then, Disney was under different administration, and after Pirates of the Caribbean, they began to embrace more edgy and darker material, it takes a while to embrace your older output, and honestly, I think that's better than not admitting it's existence at all

Since the early 70's media aimed at children isn't to sell ads or sell the movie/show itself, it was to drive sales of toys and bed sheets at the department stores.. Moichendizing! Jack Skellington t shirts were all the rage at Hot Topic.. and still are. Disney is milking every cash cow they have. To death.

This was pretty much the only 90s Disney movie I did NOT see growing up. I guess it didn't help that it was not marketed as a Disney film back then. I even watched James and the Giant Peach when I was little, but I didn't get the Jack Skellington reference in it. Kingdom Hearts 1 ended up being my first introduction to Nightmare Before Christmas, and I remember being pretty confused by the level based on the movie until I finally saw it on Disney Channel as a teen. It certainly does rank up there with the likes of Who Framed Roger Rabbit, the Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, the Lion King and Toy Story, all big hits Disney produced (or at least distributed in Toy Story's case) between the late 80s and mid 90s that redefined the possibilities of animation in the realms of musicals, live-action hybrid, stop-motion, and 3D.

I am a real cinephile and love animated movies. I grew up on Ray Harryhausen and did love Beetlejuice. But I have never understood this film. It lacks colour, wit, class and taste. It's dark and gloomy (not in a good way), the animation is incredibly clunky and rough; the songs are incredibly basic and childish; the jokes are not funny and there is no wit or cleverness to be detected. It lacks a lot of colour which is really bad for a kid's movie. It's like someone dropped all their Christmas and Halloween decorations on the floor and then said ''That's a film right there!''. It's one of the worst films I've ever seen. Like a film-making student's first attempt.
