I totally agree, at certain times in the past you could have a long-distance B-train truck every 30 seconds along with all the other traffic coming along the main road. An interesting point is that on the path beside the railway line (under Main North Road) you are about 20m from the cars on the new expressway and the individual noise coming from each car @100kph is imperceptible
Thanks Darryl. I must say that I like the quiet, laid back approach you take in making your videos and your commentary. Have a great Christmas with your family and all the best for 2023.
the waikato expressway is 110 from cambridge to hampton downs, so about 85km and the te puke bypass is 110kmh for about 20km , those are the only 110 roads in nz, the te puke bypass is a toll road while the waikato expressway is a free road
So, it's only about 105km of road all up? So that extra speed account for about 5 minutes of time saving on a drive between Auckland and Hamilton. If you drive there and back five days a week, it might save a thousand minutes a year. 17 hours.
At 1:46 I wonder if anyone is getting caught out driving north and finding that old SH1 is now a no exit road? I guess they must have some signs to say so?
As far as I know, there are no 110kph roads around Auckland. The Waikato Expressway, yes I have seen. I live in Perth nowadays. Plenty of 110km roads throughout the state. 😂 Also drove the new Pūhoi to Warkworth highway a couple weeks ago too. Nice new stretch of road. I think I may take a drive from Auckland to Wellington once these upgrades are complete.
Great to see the new motorway/expressway from north Otaki to south. Will be interesting to see how the shopping centre of Otaki re-invents itself" now that the majority of traffic has gone. They new change was coming. Your "comment of road speeds" - question - when was the last time you saw "NZ Highway Police" travelling across the roads you have filmed, or anywhere else? Sad to see the 2 lanes at Forest Lakes (north bound) gone, means that slow traffic will now be "caught" behind trucks. It is a major incline in the road at that point. Ditto the southbound segment by the off road rest area. Am I allowed to "cheeky" and ask - when will the pot holes start appearing in the new road system????
They will be able to rebuild the main street of the town and make it pretty. I think that the road past forest lakes, might have been left with two lanes so that people can pass heavy trucks that are slow on the hill.
A long time ago, there was talk that the Kapiti Expressway was a candidate for 110, but we will have to see if they eventually follow through with that. Darryl, with your initial point on Motorway vs Expressway, although the look and feel can appear the same, a Motorway has to be “gazetted” and restricts it to motorised vehicles, whilst an expressway is a high speed general purpose road. Hence North of MacKay’s Crossing is an Expressway whilst to the South it is a Motorway.
Question if you don't mind.... Corner of SH1 and SH57 (to Palmerston North) Roundabout or a overhead bridge? Bec us, not happy with NZTA Waikato/BOP, they are adding a roundabout, not a flyover bridge at Piarere, corner of SH1/SH29.
Roundabout make sense where the traffic which is crossing the intersection is less that a certain number of vehicles per hour. That intersection had a railway beside it, so they would have to acquire land to build anything different. It would have to be large and expensive. But the new SH1 route is in consultation to be moved about 2.5km to the east. So the intersection should have lower traffic after that.
@@DarrylTalks Thanks, we are still not happy with NZTA Waikato/BOP, because, from Auckland to (ie)Taupo, from 110km/hrs Expressway (double southbound lanes) & Taranaki to Mount Maunganui & Wellington to Coromandel, all meet the new roundabout going to be traffic congestion. It not about during hoilday periods, it's at anytime.
It’s so much quieter in Ōtaki now. Lifesaver

I was driving out of Wellington yesterday, and the display above the motorway read Levin 1:03, for 90km.
Great Video, thanks for sharing Darryl, I appreciate it
Glad you enjoyed it.

Hello, nice to meet you.
My daughter Alisa and I enjoyed your videos.
Thank you very much.
Have a good year!
Thank you! You too!
Thanks for that, it was pretty good tour of the express way.
Glad you enjoyed it

If you are driving from the main street of Otaki, you will drive past an onramp. There must be a sign there.

Great to see this finally open. Thanks for the video. Agree with you - the sooner the govt approves O2NL the better!
Fingers crossed! Extending the highway to where the traffic splits to different destinations, I think is the best thing to do.

this expressway is perfectly safe at 110 maybe even 120
Yeah, it seems like a really high quality highway.
