      The snag king Actually, Max's car was supposed to be a Mustang. Funnily enough, George Miller couldn't justify importing one from the US for the film so he was forced to buy local.

    • @kruleworld
      @kruleworld 5 лет назад +7

      @@atomicmillenial9728 i've been following mad max lore for 40 years and have never heard that. Perhaps you are projecting? The budget was low, and the Falcons and Holdens being 8 year old cars were cheap and plentiful. I doubt he would have ever intended to get a Mustang, and there's nothing mentioning that in the scripts or the novel (which was released before the movie). Miller just got what he could find, even donating his own Mazda Bongo van for the crash scene in the early part of the movie.

    The 1972 160MPH Super Car Scare stopped the 300HP 308 V8 LJ Torana and the Phase 4 Falcon, they were the Pinnacle of Muscle Cars in Australia. If they had fronted up for Bathurst with them in 1972, it would of been the Greatest Bathurst Ever.

    I have driven both for real in there day. Stock 4 speed manual 308 and 350 HQ SS were tire shredding beasts spinning the back wheels through 3 gears up to 80 kph, huge skids, so much fun. Stock XB GT Fords were a bit sluggish but they handled better. The GTHO's Fords were much faster. But the Hemi RT 6 pack or 770 340 V8 chargers flogged them all. Chrysler ruled the streets back then. Fuel was cheap and beer was less than a buck.

    • @brucelamberton8819
      @brucelamberton8819 5 лет назад

      Yep, rear suspension on HQ was too soft, and combined with the torque of the 350, it would just wheelspin in the lower gears at lower speeds. And the 350 in the HQ losing 30hp from the HG certainly didn't help the times either.

    • @assininecomment4934
      @assininecomment4934 5 лет назад

      The E48 might have accelerated faster than either car, but it didn't really have Chrysler's performance engine. (That was the triple-Weber motor in the E38 and E49.) Did the E48 option (single, twin-throat carb + 4-sp manual 'box) even exist when the XB GT was released?
      The variety of Monaro in this cartoon, is a heavy, soft, slow barge, and this variety of Falcon GT is exactly the same. The E49 would beat both, but was an entirely different type of performance vehicle, for an entirely different purpose. The slower E48? Dunno.
      An E55 Charger (although those with the Borg-Warner 4-sp manual are practically unheard of) would be the ideal match for these other two cars. :-)

    • @rossbrumby1957
      @rossbrumby1957 5 лет назад

      @@assininecomment4934 the E-48 was a triple Webber engine- basically a 4 speed E-37 with 248 hp. You're getting it mixed up with the 2 barrel R/T in the VH. The E-48 was available in VJ models as were some E-55's.

    • @assininecomment4934
      @assininecomment4934 5 лет назад

      @@rossbrumby1957, nope - wrong. The E38 was, initially, the highest performance VH Charger, intended to tackle the peak performance V8 variants from GM and Ford. It had the triple-Webered motor, with 3-speed. T
      The E49 came later, and was essentially the same model and motor combo, but with Borg-Warner's 4-speed box.
      Geddit? Got it? Good.
      The E37 was the earlier E38, but with a single, 2-barrel carb, instead of the triple set of Italian dual-throat carbs. Hmmm, lower number in the option package designation = lower performance.
      Can you see a pattern here, Rosco? Excellent!
      So, the E48 must have been....? Yes - it was equivalent to the E49, but again, with the lesser induction system - the single 2-barrel carb, rather than that famous set of Webers.
      No - the VJ model Valiant and Charger never had an equivalent of the E49.
      Yes - the VJ model Charger was indeed available in the down-spec E48 option, and in the heavier, softer E55 variant - just like in the VH Charger. You'd already know the E55 was never intended for competing with either of the other tribes' racing interests. Almost every single one of the E55 came with Chrysler's own slushbox.
      Chrysler Australia did actually go to Bathurst with a V8 - a VC model in '66, including an auto box.
      FWIW, Holden went to Bathurst in a 6-cyl HK. It was a Kingswood sedan, fitted with the familiar 3-sp box - the earlier version, lacking synchro on 1st gear. The motor, of course, was the 'S' performance version of the 186 - with that famous combo of dual, cast iron headers,
      the dual-throat Stromberg carby,
      plus slightly warmer cam grind, up-spec valve spring settings, and higher quality bearing materials.
      (No, the crankshaft was not steel in the HK version of the 186S, as many like to say.)

      @@kedrshr1mp6 - Here is why "that's not what happened at bathurst lol [sic] 1. The Holden model in this cartoon, was never raced in any Hardie Ferodo 500 (or 1000) at Bathurst against an XB Falcon, back in the 70s. 2. The cartoon version seems to rev up past 6500rpm, but the *actual* car that people bought and drove, didn't get close to that. (I know - the real world has an unfortunate habit of doing that. :-/ )

    Interesting video. Surprisingly (to myself) the Falcon GT weighed some kilograms less than the GTS. It would be interesting to know if the diff ratio's were similar between the two.
    The gap looks about the same as in '69 at Sandown and Bathurst, where the Windsor GTHO was just that tad quicker than the HT 350's.
    Apparently the last batch of the imported 350 motors only made closer to 250bhp.
    Being a crate engine, they had the US emissions equipped motors.
    It's easy to understand why GMH discontinued the 350,when they increased the compression of the 308,added dual exhausts as standard, and made 250bhp for the HJ series. Much cheaper as well.
    Thanks for the great upload 😁👍

    The Monaro would of had a 327 V8 Chevy motor. The GT falcon more than likely a 351 Cleveland V8 so of course the Falcon would win in a standing quarter mile. BUT if you include in this race a RT Charger which had a 5.7 litre V8 Hemi or even the RT Charger with the 6 cylinder with triple holly carbies would leave both Monaro and GT falcon for dead. I've driven a RT Charger back in the 70s and man do they have some power .

      I see you retracted your comment. I was a scrutineers assistant for speedway sometime ago, for standard saloons. We had a statesman come in with 327 chev fitted, I was only young and thought "it looks like a chev motor in an hq statesman to me, all good." I was told very quickly by the chief scrutineer, " that's no 350, looks similar, but a little thing called engine number says it's a 327." I was educated very well in early muscle cars, that man was a mechanic first, then became a GMH salesman. The smallest things, that guy knew his shit. Holden, Ford and Chrysler knowledge Australia is also my forte. The HK monaro was the only one to have the 327 sorry.
