I can give some missing context to the tactical decisions of VFR in a race that played exactly into our hands until 2 to go. This was the 2nd day of racing for the Berkeley Omnium that had real prize money on the line, including a big $2500 check for 1st. After the Berkeley RR we went in to the day with 1st, 4th, and 7th in the omnium. We were confident our crit guys (Ryan and Max) could finish ahead of the skinny guys from the day before in a bunch sprint and I figured both of them rolling in within the top 10 would secure their omnium spots. Our goal was to keep it together all race, and I assumed the rest of the field would know this and try their hardest to smash the race and break it to pieces to make our life difficult. Luckily for us a 2 man break went up the road 10 minutes into the race. I kept waiting for guys to go across, for the race to get harder, for guys to try to stick it to us. That didn't happen, so I spent my time grinning on the sidelines and talking trash to Chris every time he went by. This made it a very enjoyable race for me. Meanwhile I had the guys on the front control it. When the gap went out to 15 seconds I told them to start bringing it back. It started coming down too fast, so I told them to back off again and it went out a bit. They ramped it up once again and it came back a little earlier than we wanted at 3 to go. Job well done! Then 2 things didn't go to plan, one small and one big. 1) Jackson laid down a savage attack with 2 to go that we missed. By that time the boys wanted the stage win as well as the omnium, so Max burned some matches to bring it back. No big deal. 2) Big crash that took down both our guys. Ryan is alright, but Max is broken and separated and stitched and will be out a while. Send him some love.

Guy who crashed was also being aggressive here and by the video looks like he just leaned to far into Eamon and lost balance or something and crashed. Can’t complain about aggressive riding if you are also aggressive. You want to be safe or fair? Then let the wheel go and hop onto Eamon’s wheel and give it a go from there.
Not enough talk about the rider who crashed (hope he's ok btw) sprinting on the hoods with elbows out. It's hard to know exactly what led to the crash but you've got to be in the drops there.
@@Tryanasaur fine play semantics games. How many watts is he doing there? he's jockeying for position 900m from the line on the hoods. Everyone but the leader is on the drops.

Hello, I was just wondering how I get into races like this. I am 16, and I'm getting a road bike later this year, and I'm not sure how to get started. If you have any tips, it would be much appreciated 😁🚲 🇬🇧
Look for local clubs and established group rides in your area. These are the folks will have the best info. Sometimes it is out there on the internet, but talking to people locally that are plugged into the scene is always the best bet.
It sucks to see this happen, no matter what the circumstances. Having crashed on my first outdoor ride this year, resulting in left shoulder reconstruction surgery, I’d love to hear tips and advice for getting back to training/shape. I’m 3 weeks post surgery, 6 weeks post accident. Still in a sling and will be for 4-6 more weeks.
Main thing is to not stress about it. You haven't ridden for 6 weeks, whether it's gonna be 6, 10 or 12 weeks in total doesn't make much of a difference. Take June and July to build up some base. Easy, longer rides to get your general fitness back to a decent level. Start increasing intensity in August and you will be on good form by the end of August and September. Make sure you enjoy your rides. Fitness and confidence will follow. (no ideas about your goals obviously, but this is the general idea)
Watched the crash 10+ times, here's what I objectively observe: Alex and Eamon pass Ryan on his left. This implies that Eamon had already established Alex's wheel. Ryan ascertained that was the winning position and decided to try and fight for Alex's wheel while on the hoods with both elbows flared out. From what I can see, it appears Ryan tries to push Eamon towards the curb and gets his bars pushed because he's not protecting them. Eamon had every right to protect his position. The difference is that Eamon was in the proper position to fight for a wheel, and Ryan wasn't. Sucks to see anybody go down, and I hope Ryan and especially his teammate recover quickly. Opinion: Racing in the drops, especially in the final few laps, is crit racing 101. You have to protect your drops if you're going to try and fight for a wheel. Ryan failed to use this simple and elementary position during a key point in the race, which ultimately led to the crash.
The major flaw in this analysis is in the very first sentence. Alex had passed, but Eamon had not. Eamon doesn't even have his bars in front of mine until after I am already crashing.
Watched it back numerous times on 0.25x speed from 7mins 12. Eamon deviates left initially as Ryan pulls across with his arms out (as stated by Ryan) ✅, over to the curb. As the video plays through he does move over into Ryan in response to this. Stating he doesn’t deviate isn’t true, over the course of about 2 seconds (pre - post crash) Eamon has moved from the left side of Alex’s wheel to being on it. Almost certainly hitting Ryan in the process. Racing incident (completely) as ruled by the commissars, but don’t hide behind a ruling @NorCal Cycling, absolving someone completely and proclaiming innocence using your platform isn’t the right way to be humble. Naturally a lot goes on in a race which adds fuel to any fires. From watching many channels and races it’s not hard to believe shoulder to shoulder is going on all race and forceful riding is almost certainly happening. Shade can be thrown in any direction. Hopefully everyone recovers well and you all keep racing and putting out the content.
eh...they seemed to hold up well for the last, maybe decade, of Jeff's video channel - probably should see the 360 for more than ONE DAY to compare, lol
Ryan here. This is another massive mischaracterization. Just like the Santa Cruz video where Eamon gave Andrew a shot as he was moving up to help with the leadout while Miles was on the front. You can clearly see that the distance from the curb to Eamon's line changes during the time I get pushed from behind. He goes from 8" off the curb to about 3' off the curb. Meanwhile he generates a force with his arms and upper body that is high enough to start my front wheel sliding laterally and actually FOLD THE TIRE OFF THE RIM. There is a huge difference between elbows out to defend your own space and giving someone a shot to the handlebars. He straight up rode through my handlebars from behind. I'm fine with aggressive/physical racing but it needs do be done in a way that the other riders have an option/out other than crashing. Leaving out a bunch of context here is only further support. Like the fact that this is part of a 2 day omnium including the district championship road race the day before where I rode away solo from your whole team and was leading the omnium headed into this race (with $2500 on the line for first). Like the fact that Mike's hasn't won a single race this year against Voler. And like the fact that this was a wildly physical race with Mikes actively getting into the VFR chase line and Eamon physically moving riders off of their teammates wheels throughout. I get it, you guys were desperate for a win and you got one the only way you could. Let's call it how it is though.
The facts/video speak by themselves. Stop making excuses for racing aggressively too. Btw you took 2 free laps for a “technical issue” moments before the countdown. So if you are gonna speak this way.. be honest about the way you race too
What does going to the pit to change a flat have anything to do anything? You're trying to make that some kind of character analysis and then lean on "facts"? That reasoning does not reason.
I somewhat agree with your point but you lose any support with the unnecessary attacks at the end. It just make you sound whiny and salty. Be the bigger man. What a sore loser, are you 12?
@@NorCalCycling Congrats on having a camera angle that doesn't clearly show his sideways move on a 1" gopro screen in the sunlight. Definitely irrefutable evidence. See you guys at the next one.
@@Tryanasaur You are a grown man and should learn to behave like one first before you go crying and accusing people on the internet. I dont even know who is who but lets just look at the footage. At 8:42 the person I think is Eamon is clearly right on Alex ( I think) wheel and even a bit right of him). Then suddenly at 8:49 Eamon has moved on the other side by 6 or 7 inches why? Clearly you ramming into him with your elbow like you see at 8:49. Then at 9:31 when you lose control of your balance you clearly see Eamon is still 4-5 inches to the left of alex instead of on the right where he started so his line stayed parralel to Alex riding line. How is it unfair that your crash into him push him 8 inches towards the curb where he has a chance of crashing out and then when he pushes you back to avoid crashing into the curb you wipe out? If you can handle the heat dont race.
@@glhyphic I'm not the one accusing people. Jeff and Eamon decided to use this platform to accuse and blame me for the crash and I took the only opportunity I have (the comments section on the internet, sadly) to point out what actually happened. Jeff has my number, he could have called me or invited me to tell my side, but he didn't. No crying here. I usually let my riding do the talking but I'm not going to let them continuously mischaracterize our riding here.
Hilarious to read the noob armchair QB comments. Both Eamon and Ryan are class riders with tons of pro level experience and skills. Sucks that it happened but we will see them battle again.
ya the super wide angle is a bit strange at times (like straight lines can become curved) but I do like seeing when I brake and shift. Still playing around with the exact position and angles, thanks for the feedback
2 Important Points: 1. This video has been edited and paused with associated commentary to portray the context from only 1 team’s side of the crash. 2. Eamon states “my line didn’t deviate” precisely when the video shows his line deviating. He begins from the left side of Alex’s wheel mm from the curb, and ends up a foot or two from the curb on the right side of Alex’s wheel. Fighting for wheels in the last laps of a race is commonplace, but when you’re pushing through their handlebars you’ve removed the option for that rider to escape an inevitable crash.
i'm on 28 but my rim inside width is particularly wide, making them like 31+ after mounted and inflated. I'm willing to bet almost everyone is on either 28 or 30 probably most are 28.
@@NorCalCycling yeah I recently got an s5 and the inner width on the reserves are 25 up front 24 out back, pirellis don’t blow up as wide as the stock corsas so was wondering if 30s would match the profile a little better
“Ryan comes into me and takes his own front wheel out” What a fucking joke. You missed the part where Eamon was physically fighting me for my own teammates wheel like 20 minutes into the race for no reason.
Hey Willy sorry if there’s something I missed I’m just doing an objective play by play and had eamon on to describe the race from his perspective. I’ll post the whole video on my second channel soon and I was around eamon for much of the race so hopefully that will provide some visibility.
@@NorCalCycling nothing but respect for you Jeff, but watching the video you can see Eamon come from the curb and move laterally when Ryan crashes. I totally understand that we’re both going to look at this with our own bias but hearing Eamon say that he didn’t deviate from his line just isn’t right.
@@appetit2619 it shows intent to use force when not needed. I ride for VFR and was sitting on the back of our train while we chased while Eamon was shoving me off the wheel.
@@wmyers4769I’m a neutral in this incident. You can clearly see that as the first riders come flying past Eamon is already on his wheel. Ryan wanted a piece of that action and got his elbows out, which of course I can’t see how much force is in that contact, but it’s naturally going to have to have a counter force, or he’s going to be put into the curb. Ryan had space to his right, and could release that pressure, but he persisted in fighting for the wheel. Instead of looking at Eamon’s position relative to the Curb, look at it relative to the wheel of the rider in front. He is still to the left of that wheel, when Ryan crashed. I put this down as a racing incident from people getting physical in a fast bike race. I don’t think there was any intent here. Best wishes to Ryan for a speedy recovery.
Jeff, I liked your videos better when you were by yourself commenting on racing and explaining tactics. Your guests bring unnecessary ego stuff. You are a very fair racer but are now involved in overly aggressive if not outright dangerous bs from guest speakers.
you're right, eamon deviated from his line. The way I see it he was on Alex's wheel, then got pushed towards the curb, and pushed back to reclaim alex's wheel. when you have someone contesting your position and physical contact is made it's hard to hold a straight line. Like I said in a previous comment, looks to me like eamon had 2 choices, either relinquish the position by squeezing brakes and drifting back, likely losing the race, or push back and defend. I'm not arguing that either is correct, but there are risks associated for BOTH riders when neither are backing down. Hate seeing this unfortunate outcome, and I hope ryan and max have a speedy recovery.
@@NorCalCycling totally agree with what your saying. It’s just not the way Eamon described it. We understand bumping happens and it’s like gravity gets stronger between riders once they touch. It just leaves a bad impression when you’re showing some great slow mo video where we can analyze it in great detail and we are hearing that he just lost balance. In the moment it only took a few seconds and we remember things in a different way.
a case of common denominator to me. second norcal video of Mike's Bikes riders being overly aggressive and this time resulting in a nasty crash. Jeff, your content has always been better than this. Zero humility or remorse coming from you and your guest on this video.
I'm with you, there's a much stronger case to be made that the "go away, this is my wheel" contact was overly aggressive in santa cruz. Here I just don't see it, eamon has alex's wheel and gets pushed towards the curb. he could've squeezed brakes, given up the position and lost the race. Instead he decided to push back and defend his position. I don't think that eamon is remorseful because he doesn't view what he did was wrong, but he is certainly sympathetic for ryan with the unfortunate outcome, we all are.
@@NorCalCyclingthis is what I don’t get. Is Eamon supposed to just hit the brakes and lose the race because someone with their hands on the hoods elbows him into the curb? Or is he within his rights to hold his ground and keep his position? If the roles were reversed I don’t think this other team would feel differently than team mikes bikes does
Crashing out your competition through reckless riding, posting it in 4k, and then blaming him for it is crazy work 😭😭😭 NorCal Gaslighting back at it again ☠️
I'd say it was risky on both their parts, it was a critical moment in the race. Official disagreed with you and Ryan after reviewing this footage. Ryan's protest against Eamon was overturned.
I never said it deserved relegation, but that doesn't mean he didn't crash him out. If another rider is overlapping my rear wheel, and I swing out and accidentally/on purpose take them out, I wouldn't be relegated for it but everyone would know I did it. Eamon is a smart enough racer to know exactly what he was doing, and flexing about this win and blaming Ryan just seems in bad taste.
Everyone knows you guys took a big risk taking on Eamon at the start of this year- those leaked videos of the emergency team meeting to discuss it were funny. I just think part of taking on that risk is understanding when a dangerous racer went too far, and having the integrity to not farm it for content and clout. I understand every comment and view on this video is money in your pocket, but maybe at least an apology to Ryan would have been justified, if not having him on to give his side of the story.

Can’t complain about aggressive riding if you are also aggressive. You want to be safe or fair? Then let the wheel go and hop onto Eamon’s wheel and give it a go from there.
eh idk if you can say he's more aggressive than others, but it was no one else's fault
Not enough talk about the rider who crashed (hope he's ok btw) sprinting on the hoods with elbows out. It's hard to know exactly what led to the crash but you've got to be in the drops there.
Nobody is sprinting. We are still 900m from the finish line.
@@Tryanasaur fine play semantics games. How many watts is he doing there? he's jockeying for position 900m from the line on the hoods. Everyone but the leader is on the drops.
crazy that no one went down at 3:30
Hi Jeff, I just noticed you wear prescription glasses. If you do not mind me asking, do you also use prescription while riding?
Contacts imo. It ain't worth screwing up a pair of Rx sunglasses in a crash. Also you'd need at least one pair of Rx transitions/photochromic for sunrise/sunset races/rides.
@@kidsafe I wish but unfortunately I have a phobia with my eyes and cant get myself to wear contacts :(. I am considering getting a Roka Torino 2.0 frame and have my doctor fit some transition lenses.
sportsrx i wear them for 95% of my riding. i use the rudy project rydon with transition lenses. i'll be making a video about this topic shortly.
@@NorCalCycling Thanks!!!
@@NorCalCycling What prescription are the beer goggles you wear when reviewing footage? 😝
Fuck man, these videos with Eamon are killer. Also amazing camera work, some of the best content you've released imo.
At the time of the crash, what was Alex thinking?
He didn't have a teammate in his wheel. Unless he thought he was going to ride Ryan and Eamon off, what was he doing out front?
Eamon's hair - better than MIPS. 😂
this comment has me dying 🤣🤣
At some point you’re going to have to do a pre-race comparison Eamon’s versus Clever Martinez’ hair and let the viewers decide who has the winning coiffure

That front tire crossing over and over at @3:35 😬😬😬

high risk move right there by him
Now makes perfect sense why Eaman texted me last year if I’m gonna get back to racing. Big bro doing it big in Cali now.
Please have eamon on more man he’s a beast and I’m glad to see he’s been more active on social media recently!
Nice footage. I was wondering how you attached the camera to the bike ?
Great footage and discussion!
Hola, que App usas para colocar la Telemetría a tus Vídeos?? y el cuenta kilómetros regresivo??
Hey NorCal, how did you mount your insta 360 on your bike?
Hell yeah! Let’s go!
Hey, what Mount are you using for the instant360?
The new camera is awesome.
I wonder if you could slightly lower the FOV angle for the camera for less distortion
Crit beef!!! 🎉
What mount did you use for the jnsta360?
i'm going to make a video about this i think, because it's so important to mount 360 cameras correctly
Watched the crash 10+ times, here's what I objectively observe:
Alex and Eamon pass Ryan on his left.
Opinion:
Racing in the drops, especially in the final few laps, is crit racing 101.
@@Tryanasaur next time use the drops and hold the bar tight mate
The 360 camera makes for excellent analysis of the crash.
I'll never understand how people can be comfortable riding that close to one another lol.
jeff what mount do you use for the insta360?
Why no mention of the aggressive arm movement/elbowing by Eamon? He's at least partly responsible for the crash.
At least I can Watch some interesting racing footage when I can´t race by my self (last race chain snaped 2nd round in a 6km course)
Injured?
The fisheye lens should be mandatory. It's a more realistic perspective. . Plus I like seeing the shifting and braking.
Agree 100%
Glad you got the 360 dude, Gopros be kicking thr bucket wayyyy too often.
eh...they seemed to hold up well for the last, maybe decade, of Jeff's video channel - probably should see the 360 for more than ONE DAY to compare, lol

can you link the mount for the camera?
360 camera "how-to" video coming.. a lot of people have been asking and it deserves its own video
Wouldn’t be the first time Eamon rides like this. He’s built up quite the reputation
@@Tryanasaurjust man up and accept that you crashed because you were being aggressive
I think I cannot blame eamon on this one,the other guy came from the back to fight for the wheel and loose that battle
His tyre deforming like that, to low pressure?
weird to see a bike race in the middle of suburbia
Eamon a big goof
Direct result of low pressure too.
I came to blame you for the crash but the video makes that pretty hard.
I approached it as objectively as I could, and came to the same conclusion that the official did after Ryan protested the result.
No way that their concerns were graceful😂
Excellent cinematography.
I liked the gopro footage better. The insta360 gets you those side views but generally it's just way too wide of a view. Too fish-eye
that can be adjusted! appreciate your feedback i'll continue making tweaks
Hilarious to read the noob armchair QB comments. Both Eamon and Ryan are class riders with tons of pro level experience and skills. Sucks that it happened but we will see them battle again.
best comment on here
Not sure I’m loving the new camera, there seems to be warping all over the place, looking at the levers makes my head hurt
ya the super wide angle is a bit strange at times (like straight lines can become curved) but I do like seeing when I brake and shift. Still playing around with the exact position and angles, thanks for the feedback
2 Important Points:
How can you go 30mph for so long 😅
y'all ripping on 28s or 30s for these crits
i'm on 28 but my rim inside width is particularly wide, making them like 31+ after mounted and inflated.
A 1k course and 250m straights, 4 corners......you guys have successfully turned bike racing into nascar
What does that first contact have to do with the second? No bias, just asking.
Mikes straight up lying about not deviating from the line. You were clearly not behind Alex’s wheel. Look how close to the curb you were.
you're right, eamon deviated from his line.
If the roles were reversed I don’t think this other team would feel differently than team mikes bikes does
@@CoffinFlopRecs I wouldn't give up the position either
Crashing out your competition through reckless riding, posting it in 4k, and then blaming him for it is crazy work 😭😭😭 NorCal Gaslighting back at it again ☠️
I'd say it was risky on both their parts, it was a critical moment in the race. Official disagreed with you and Ryan after reviewing this footage. Ryan's protest against Eamon was overturned.
and technically it's 8k shoutout insta360 😂
I understand every comment and view on this video is money in your pocket, but maybe at least an apology to Ryan would have been justified, if not having him on to give his side of the story.
you seem confused.
That was such an amateur crash. I'd bet that guy didn't start riding a bike till he was in his 20's.
