This happens to cars too, I always put my cruise control at 70 dead on and the amount of times I’ve overtaken people going 67 or 68 then near enough right after I’ve overtaken then suddenly speed up and go around me then slow back down so I need to overtake, and look at me and react as if I’m the one doing something wrong? These types of people make no sense at all.
With you there! I just don’t get it. Happened to me more in my ‘06 Jetta than my ‘15 Mazda 6. I wondered if these idiots didn’t like being passed by certain cars. Maybe it was too embarrassing for them 🙄
I have a theory that these drivers have terrible accelerator control and can't maintain a constant speed. They probably think they're going a steady speed and it's just everyone around them driving inconsistently!
They are the gormless loons that have no control of their vehicle, they are the kind that let their car speed up down hill and slow up hill, they never learn to drive. As for the driver in this video I think he's doing it on purpose. I drove trucks for thirty years and you could sort them out when we didn't have limiters but nowadays .....!
Step 1. Set cruise control to 70 mph Step 2. Approach slower driver in lane 1 and pull out into lane 2 to overtake Step 3. Slower driver speeds up a bit. Click cruise control up a couple of notches to 73mph to get past. Step 4. Driver speeds up even more. Step 5. Click cruise control up to 75mph to get past. Step 6. Slower driver speeds up even more. Step 7. Pull in behind driver now going faster than I wish to go and reset cruise to 70mph. Step 8. Driver slows down to 65 mph. Step 9. Repeat from step 1.
With drivers like that, in general I maintain my distance for a moment, drop a gear to get into the power band a bit, mirrors, signal, lane change, floor it. With idiots like that, the faster you can get past them within a reasonable speed, the less time they have to follow suit and stop you overtaking. It obviously goes without saying that you need to have plenty of leeway speed-wise to be able to pull this off legally, but I find the less reaction time that driver has to be able to counter your overtake, the less likely they are to do so, unless they're in a base-model BMW, Audi or Mercades.
And then the poor truck driver gets blamed by faster traffic behind for holding them up and being a "lane hog" when the real cause of the hold up was the idiot in the inside lane unexpectedly speefding up. Had it happen to myself in a car too.
I call them sleepers, they are asleep, plodding along the road. You start to pass them and they wake up and realise how slow they are going so speed up. Then they fall asleep again and the foot falls off the gas pedal. They always seem to pick a speed which is just 1mph slower than a trucks limiter.
I was in the van with my old colleague who did this. I just looked over at him glazed over doing 50 mph on the M6 (actually in lane 1 for once) when there was no reason not to be doing 70, so sure enough an articulated lorry started overtaking us. Once the lorry was at a point where he’s about to start moving back over, my colleague suddenly starts accelerating, leaving the lorry floundering in lane 2. Understandably the lorry started to veer into our lane forcing us on to the hard shoulder out of frustration. My colleague was flabbergasted “what a prick, why did he do that?. I explained to him what I just saw him do; his reaction “No I didn’t” like he genuinely believed I made that up and he didn’t do anything wrong and is best driver in the world. This man was the dumbest and most arrogant person I’ve ever met, especially behind the wheel.
I had one like this one late night a couple of years ago. I overtook him at 70, he then overtook me at 80, then slowed back down to 60. So I overtook him again at 70, then he overtook me at 80 again then slowed down to 60. So I overtook him at 70, made a rude sign, and took the next exit. He then followed me on my bumper for the next 5 miles, until he saw that I was heading for the rough end of town, and probably lived there, which I do. So he did a U-turn. HaHa.
You should do what l do, get halfway past and if you see them speed up just put your left hand indicator on and move a couple of inches, they soon stop doing it!
I used to think clowns like this didn’t like me passing them in my old ‘06 VW Jetta. They’re so thick they can’t even maintain speed so you end up catching them over and over again... 🙄
so many people accelerate when being over taken. If i can i'll speed up, safely pull back into the lane and then go back to my speed. strangely, few then overtake. Sometimes alas I hoot instead and then pull in behind them as speeding up is not a sensible option
Most people don’t know the Highway Code in this regard. (When being overtaken you should not increase your speed. You should even be prepared to slow down if necessary to allow the one overtaking to complete their manoeuvre). The Highway Code is the law of the road. If you don’t follow it you’re breaking the law. Because of the speed restriction placed on HGVs this happens mostly to lorry drivers but not exclusively. It’s also very frustrating.
You should report this person to the police, it's blooming dangerous what he's doing, I know it's a year ago, but it doesn't matter, if he'll take on a lorry, lord knows what he'd do to another car, it's an accident waiting to happen

@@rmc5278 Fair enough, & I'll agree with you on that some of the time, but I meet far too many drivers like this to let them add wasted time to my trips. Also, truckies on a tight schedule don't have the luxury of losing 5 minutes for every pratt like this that they meet.
Some years ago now, I was stupid enough to get annoyed by a driver playing speed games with me on a motorway.
