Although Ive just lost my significant other and Love of My Life, Im sure she would want you to send that flying Machine to me for My Bday Today. And I completely agree with her, lol :) Several years ago I bought her a small Park Flyer, I put it in the air ir to show her how the controls worked . It was a little tail heavy and proposing up and down, I gave her the controls and she flew strait and steady! She was a natural with those 2 channel plains. She had the time of her life. I love this. The original Apprentice was my first plane that I learned on. I got tired of breaking the nose wheel so made it a tail dragger. I may buy this for my nephew.
This was my first ever plane. 2 connections 2 wing screws and pop in the landing gear. I didn’t read the manuals I didn’t do any simulation time either lol just put it up in the sky and gave it a shot! Was so easy!!!
This was my very first real RC plane, and still one of my favorites, although since getting my P51D mustang, my STOL hasn't seen much air time, i do usually take it out and at least burn thru one battery tho, it's just the P51D is faster and definitely handles the wind better, plus being new you know how it is haha. Still love my Hobby Zone Apprentice STOL tho
Horizon has another winner here. Now if they would just make the standard size Apprentice a taildragger. I converted mine and it handles on grass MUCH better. Thanks for a great review, Nate and Abby. Looking forward to Abby's video.
Including flight sim time is pretty awesome. That would show newer pilots the value in flight sims. I learned about four crash in that flight sims save money and time.
I fly at a club with a nice, flat, long paved strip. One of my TurboTimber Evo tires separated from the rim, and I replace those big wheels with really small ones. I like the way it lands and flies, but it looks a bit goofy compared to a standard Evo. If I were to get one of these, I'd put some small diameter Dubro ultra lights on it. I think that the ratio of fun to capability of this one was very high for the reviewer. I also like the photographers increased interaction. Especially the pointing out the errors of his ways! ("Not a good example of hands off!!!") Thanks from bringing us this
@@turionb1408 I would say: No. I had an original one some years back, when I already had a lot of experience with a good first plane. And it was difficult for me. I now have a lot more experience, although I still consider myself a beginner (kind of like a ninth degree white belt, or maybe yellow belt) and I can easily fly the newer version, the Turbo Timber Evolution. I also have an FMS SuperEz, and I find that to be a very capable plane, but suitable as a first plane. It does not have the traditional STOL look to it, but functinally it is; it will take off in 5 feet or less. When I first started out, I had a true beginner, first-planes, a Stratos (no longer available). And it got boring really fast. The SuperEz, Parkzone Sport Cub, Ares Gamma 370 that I also had also worked well as a beginner plane, but all of them had enough extra capability in them to not get boring. I think this is the kind of plane that is worth getting, as it will work as a beginner plane, but as you advance, it will still be enjoyable to use.
@@turionb1408 Something I forgot because it is about the Apprentice 700mm not Evo: it is WAY under 250 grams, which means that you can fly it anywhere without the remote ID. That really opens up a lot of potential flying locations, which the Evo would be excluded from. Even if you were to get an Evo, a plane of under 250 gr like this Apprentice STOL would get a lot of use.
@@romaichirules2844 hello :) awesome thanks for the input. I think i take the apprenrice stol 700 for a start. Like you said i can fly it everywhere. I can always buy a timber evo if i get better. Thanks for the help greetings from switzerland.
@@turionb1408 Being in Switzerland, you may be dealing with Horizon Hobby De (Germany). I have found that their inventory can be a bit different from HH in the states. Generally, a new airplane that is available in the US may not be available in Europe for awhile; the new blue Cherokee is an example. On the other end, I've found that they can have inventory of an airplane a LONG time after it is no longer available in the US; eg, I got a UMX Mosquito from them two years or so after it was no longer available in US.
Nice little trainer Flew great. Hand launch preferred, another reason to look into a slide launching ramp. Great flying/ Great videoing. Nate you were sorta looking like Popeye 🐶 before a grooming 😂😂😁😁🤭🤭. ⚓️⚓️👍🧡💛💚👍🐶😂😁🤭👍⚓️⚓️.
It’s definitely a solid trainer option and an alternative to the Aeroscout if you want something more realistic looking. Plus it’s under 250g so for some that’s handy! Happy Flying! 👍💯😎✈️⚓️
@TheRcSaylors mine has this thing with the rudder where if you grab the rudder and move it manually, the servo doesn't actually do anything. i looked inside and the cable moves the whole way down. Something abt the linear servo bit where it actually moves back/forth means it doesn't actually turn any of the gears, yet it still functions normally in this state, apart from not being centered. Does yours do that?
Looks cool. Great review. I had the original umx Timber and it was great, especially with no wheels it was a little rocket! This might be next since the Timber got sold off.
Always love your videos, thank you. How does this compare to the UMX Turbo Timber Evolution (698mm) for a beginner flyer? That product has AS3X/SAFE and is priced very similarly but arguably has a lot more headroom (2S or 3S with JST, floats). Thx.
I bought the plane and on my first flight had the rudder break because a small piece of connecting plastic fell off. I still works, luckily, but I must wait for three weeks until replacement parts are available.
Hey I have a question , I have been out of flying RC planes now for about 13 years and now I just retired and want to get back into it. I bought a used DX6 transmitter and have a RTF plane on the way.My question is can I bind the RTF plane to the DX6. Oh by the way I think you guys are great and keep up with the great vids
That would have been nice to learn on. I used a nitro sweet stick plane. I still want a ultra micro or flat foamy Draco plane. That might get me back into the Horizon stuff even though I don't like how they discontinue models to quickly.
@@williamnowicki68no, remote doesn't beep and there's no meter to show battery level, if you fly pretty easy you'll get 9-10 minutes, but if you stay on the throttle pretty hard full time, you'll get maybe 7 minutes
In most cases, ESC & motor can take more than actually rated. As a frugal prefer no additional expenses cheap b*st*Rd, I wouldn't hesitate to 3s that motha'!
If the BNF was $25 less, I would jump on this as a great trainer and loaner plane over the sport cub s2. However, it is too close in price to the umx turbo timber evo, which gives much more value at basically the same price point ($10 more atm). Drop the price, and I'm sold on this.
Very valid points! For me, if I’m buying another plane it’s gonna be a Valiant or Aeroscout, or almost any UMX… but for a newcomer to the hobby, I can see the value IF they don’t like the Aeroscout 👍💯😎⚓️
I wanting this plane and then later an xcub or sport cub s. With only 4acres not wooded i dont know of i can fly a valiant like i want. Can this stock rtf transmitter bind to those other planes? Or should i buy a dx6 and then wait a payday or so and get the bind and fly model of this plane
I ordered the BNF version knowing that it is SLT compatible and my Hitec Flash 7 has that protocol (along with Hitec's proprietary protocol). Have you ever tried to bind a receiver to a SLT transmitter?
How do I charge the battery for this with the s120 charger, I have the adapter wire, when I plug it in the light turns red, new battery and charger, thanks
Neither. If you need something to fly in big wind you need some weight my friend, around 1kg can handle up to maybe 20kph with ease depending on your skill level. I'd recommend checking out either the arrows hobby bigfoot or the FMS pa-18. If your wallet is heavy then maybe the multiplex funcub NG. Happy flying!
I would say yes cause I was an rc car addict and I got into the rc plane hobby and skipped the beginner planes and that was a bad idea so I would say yes you do need to begin with a beginner. I’ve been in this hobby of rc plane for some time now I would recommend an Aeroscout, the bigger apprentice, or the fms ranger v2 (first two planes are horizon hobby) he says there easy to fly but it’s not that easy to fly these things also so it’s a more rewarding hobby than rc cars. It’s also not that hard to fly too so don’t take what I said like it’s super hard.
If I plane on getting into the rc plane industry for years to come would this transmitter last me a few years and work with upgraded planes down the line or should I invest in a nicer controller now.
Pick up a used spektrum 6x6e and you can find to any eflite airplane or blade helicopter. It's a great computer radio will every option you will probably need and be found cheap on the used market
I have the Arrows great fun plane but the stock transmitter is toy grade , this plane is a big step forward and you can bind it with any transmitter that provides DSMX protocol .
I should add, this is not the norm for Eflite. Usually their radios are “shareable” with other planes. Not sure why they went this route with this particular airplane. 🤔🙃⚓️
@@TheRcSaylors I think I will buy the carbon cub s2, is it a good option for a beginner? I had a toy grade piper j3 cub and I flew it incredible, btw thank you
Slow for sure, but that’s not to say there aren’t planes out there that fly slower than this. This is a good alternative to the Aeroscout, if you just downright refuse to fly it because of the way it looks, IMO. 👍💯😎⚓️
i am tired of looking for my first plane. ive looked at all slow flying beginner plane options with tech. is this the one? ive looked at arrows pioneer, aeroscout. etc. etc. should i just go with this one?
In my opinion, no. Aeroscout is the absolute winner. The ONLY reason a person wouldn’t buy the Aeroscout is because of its looks. Some people need their plane to look real. Personally, I like the way it looks! I hope this is helpful, but I’m just trying to be blunt to help you save some time. 👍💯😎⚓️
bit.ly/3oWaxPe Here’s a link to order yours. It supports us at no cost to you, and we would be very grateful if you did order through this link! Looks like the RTF is in stock too! 👍💯⚓️
So with these rtf planes are the remotes that they come with able to be paired with bind and fly airplanes or is it only compatible with that one airplane
If the RTF plane comes with “Spektrum DSX” controller (radio). That radio can bind to other DSMX 6-7 channel spektrum receivers. Example of RTF with that radio is the (RTF HobbyZone AeroScout S2) plane. Also some other planes with that radio.
Typically these RTF’s come with a non-computerized radio. You can bind it to another dsmx or dsm2 aircraft, but you’d have to set direction and retrim, and it wouldn’t control the original aircraft until rebound to that. In short, if you are going to use one radio for multiple models it’s best to get a computer transmitter where each model is bound to a slot in model memory. I’d also say if you know you are going to stick with the hobby, buying more transmitter than you need prevents you from wanting to upgrade later. For example early on I got a DX8… but later got gas planes I wanted to set up for 9 channel… and got a Dx18.
I can't say about this one yet but the AeroScout is heavier which helps in the wind. I expect them both to be great but it doesn't take a lot of wind to change things drastically.
I'm over the umx airplanes, the foam they use is way to delicate. I know they need to keep them light but E flite could improve that aspect of these little airplanes.
@@myksanchez1222 is the coolest person to ever play with toy airplanes! He has made me realize that I myself am not cool enough to play with toy airplanes so I will be giving all of mine to the kids that ride on the short bus and I'll be taking up pickleball and dating his daughter.
@@jordancoleman2402 they don't have to make it out of the weakest material ever, there's nothing wrong with the foam they use now, but if YOU don't know how to fly and keep lawndarting their planes then that's on YOU, not the plane or the company. Stop acting like a child and take some accountability for your bad piloting and stop blaming the world around you.
I learned on a Sig kadet and I know showing my age. Been out of it for awhile now and was wondering about the FMS 1300 PA-18 bush plane. My brother has plenty of room at his place and would be grass/sand yard
Why would you buy this, when for $10 more you can get a Umx turbo timber Evo? Twice the airplane and it has flaps. Should be about $20 less when you buy bnf. Nice flying!
Thanks! Yeah, though this airplane has some strong points, it does feel like it missed the mark in other areas. Our least favorite feature is simply the fact that it uses its own “brand” of frequency. In other words, the plane can’t connect to Spektrum radios and the included radio can’t connect to other BNF planes. Odd choice, but it could be the perfect plane for some, looking for a specific weight point and likely buying out of a hobby shop from the kid behind the counters recommendation. Fair points you made about the price point. 👍😎⚓️
Thanks for another great video, Nate! I'm looking for my 2nd plane, after the Volantex F4U. I can fly that briefly in manual mode, fighting its squirrely nature, but I'm looking for the next step in flying manual mode (with safety mode as a backup). I also fly at a school sports field, so a park flyer is preferred. I was considering the Sport Cub S2, per your other videos, but now I'm wondering if this works be a better option. I've also considered getting a flight simulator so i can practice during the long winters, so maybe this will save some money in buying a radio that will connect? What do you think, would you recommend this for my situation or something more like the next video, the Super EZ? Thank you!
My only complaint is the controller looks even cheaper than the already horrible DXs. DXs is already prone to the sticks failing. Entry level controllers from spektrum have got absolutely sorry.
All I can say is I like the fact that they labeled everything well for the beginner.. Have you looked into the protocol that this radio operates on? 🤔😬🤷♂️⚓️

Very valid points! For me, if I’m buying another plane it’s gonna be a Valiant or Aeroscout, or almost any UMX… but for a newcomer to the hobby, I can see the value IF they don’t like the Aeroscout 👍💯😎⚓️
How is it taking off grass @TheRcSailors?
Very nice love
Will the ESC in this plane allow for the use of a 300mAh 3S battery (like you can with the UMX TT EVO)?
i called this like 2 months ago, like this should have benn a thing along time ago
Really interested in this plane. Could you use 2s 800mah batteries? I have 4 that are not in use as of late. Great channel by the way….
I wanting this plane and then later an xcub or sport cub s. With only 4acres not wooded i dont know of i can fly a valiant like i want.
Can this stock rtf transmitter bind to those other planes? Or should i buy a dx6 and then wait a payday or so and get the bind and fly model of this plane
nice plane just about to purchase my first ever rc plane but i just can't decide haha
There are a lot to chose from! If you have any questions, feel free to ask! 👍💯⚓️
Don’t. Parts support is shit.
I ordered the BNF version knowing that it is SLT compatible and my Hitec Flash 7 has that protocol (along with Hitec's proprietary protocol). Have you ever tried to bind a receiver to a SLT transmitter?
That's cool they are adding different protocols to their receivers, always thought it was kind of a cash grab to have all their stuff spektrum only.
@@jordancoleman2402 It successfully bound to the basic DXs transmitter!
@@rva1945 nice!! How does it fly?
@@jordancoleman2402 unfortunately I still couldn't fly it, maybe next weekend!
Can you use other bind and fly aircraft with this transmitter?
Not really at this time, but the airplane can be bound to spektrum radios.
How do I charge the battery for this with the s120 charger, I have the adapter wire, when I plug it in the light turns red, new battery and charger, thanks
Apprentice STOL or Arrows pioneer as first plane?
I feel like the Aeroscout s2 1.1 is a better plane to start with?
The aeroscout S2 is a bigger plain. Realy your trying to compair apples to oranges.
Should I buy this or the hobby zone sport cub? Considering that I need a plane that flies into relatively big wind
How far away from you can an RC plane fly before the distance is too great for the controller?
Before it’s out of range of the transmitter you haven’t seen the plane a couple of minutes.
So on safe will it fly in a ball feild?
I have a decent amount of rc car experience doing it for like 25 years. Do I need to still begin with a plane like this?
I would say yes cause I was an rc car addict and I got into the rc plane hobby and skipped the beginner planes and that was a bad idea so I would say yes you do need to begin with a beginner. I’ve been in this hobby of rc plane for some time now I would recommend an Aeroscout, the bigger apprentice, or the fms ranger v2 (first two planes are horizon hobby) he says there easy to fly but it’s not that easy to fly these things also so it’s a more rewarding hobby than rc cars. It’s also not that hard to fly too so don’t take what I said like it’s super hard.
@ thanks for that
@@MattLitkeRacing your welcome
If I plane on getting into the rc plane industry for years to come would this transmitter last me a few years and work with upgraded planes down the line or should I invest in a nicer controller now.
Pick up a used spektrum 6x6e and you can find to any eflite airplane or blade helicopter. It's a great computer radio will every option you will probably need and be found cheap on the used market
How much wind will the mini fly in?
5mph..6kts
من اي متجر ممكن نشتريها ؟ وما اسمها بالتحديد ؟ شكرا
Saved you a click. Price is $159 and $229, presumably without or with a controller.
this or arrows pioneer 620 rtf for beginners?
looking for very slow relaxed flying and rtf
I have the Arrows great fun plane but the stock transmitter is toy grade , this plane is a big step forward and you can bind it with any transmitter that provides DSMX protocol .
I have a question does the airplane send some sort of signal than the battery will die?
Can I use the Spektrum SLT6 that comes included with this for other rc planes? Or is it made specifically for the apprentice stol 700mm?
The radio included with this RTF airplane can Only be used on it, and it can’t be bound to other radios. ⚓️
I should add, this is not the norm for Eflite. Usually their radios are “shareable” with other planes. Not sure why they went this route with this particular airplane. 🤔🙃⚓️
@@TheRcSaylors I think I will buy the carbon cub s2, is it a good option for a beginner? I had a toy grade piper j3 cub and I flew it incredible, btw thank you
@@TheRcSaylors ok, thank you
Thank you for giving thanks to God!
Would using a 7.4v 350mAh 50c in this plane cause it to burn up the ESC? I have 4 of those from OMP hobby for my M1 helicopter.
They will work but chances are the airplane will have a different plug and you will have to buy an adapter or solder new plugs on one or the other.
Is this considered a slow flyer? I'm looking for a realistic slow flyer plane....although I do like this plane too
Slow for sure, but that’s not to say there aren’t planes out there that fly slower than this.

Here’s a link to order yours. It supports us at no cost to you, and we would be very grateful if you did order through this link! Looks like the RTF is in stock too! 👍💯⚓️
@@TheRcSaylors wow, great choice. been watching videos. the rtf doesnt come with batteries or charger though? so its not an rtf?
$229 at my hobby store for this model The ones that I see for $300-$400 are the bigger versions of this 👍
So with these rtf planes are the remotes that they come with able to be paired with bind and fly airplanes or is it only compatible with that one airplane
as far as i know, RTF controllers bundled with the RTF aircraft are only for that aircraft only
@@Dobbles862 ok thanks
It doesn't say, but 700mm wing is it a UMX?
NOT a UMX, and we only barely briefly mentioned that in the video 😉👍 💯⚓️
Looks like a copy of the gws e-starter (best beginner plane)
just got it
Cool! Happy Flying! 👍💯😎⚓️
@@TheRcSaylors dose it come with EVERYTHING?
i subed btw
@OliversAviation1 yes u can get ready to fly
This was an excellent review. Unfortunately as I live in Canada this plane will cost well over $300. A little out of my range.
300 hundred in Canada ? For this you omg
You I ment it's not worth 300
Which is better? This or the Aeroscout?
I like this Design more bit the aeroscout is the best beginner plane
They say that too
I can't say about this one yet but the AeroScout is heavier which helps in the wind. I expect them both to be great but it doesn't take a lot of wind to change things drastically.
I'm over the umx airplanes, the foam they use is way to delicate. I know they need to keep them light but
E flite could improve that aspect of these little airplanes.
This is made from a more robust foam than UMX
Learn how to fly without crashing and it won't matter how strong the foam is...
@@myksanchez1222 oh you are absolutely Right, then they can make the toy airplanes out of the weakest material ever when I become perfect like you 😉🫡
@@myksanchez1222 is the coolest person to ever play with toy airplanes!
Don’t crash, props on back order 2 months at least
Ooh, that’s a while to wait for props! Sorry to hear that. Sometimes things come in sooner than the forecasted date. 💯⚓️
Do you have to purchase a dongle to fly the simulator. It does not mention that on the site to purchase.
@@TheRcSaylors The model has a Dual-protocol Spektrum DSMX and SLT compatible receiver so you can use other transmitters.
Clean. Where can you get a UMX Turbo Timber Evo RTF ?
Over priced I feel like…but also, the price is the price, get ya money up 😂
Bought for my sons birthday

I. have this plane but I can't turn SAFE off. Also elevator travel is very minimal. Anyone else observe this?
look fragile at the noze .... 1 touch crack the noze in 2 pieces
Maybe! Hopefully we don’t crash it! It is made of a more durable foam, according to the manufacturer 🤷♂️ Thanks for watching! 👍💯⚓️
