    That artwork still looks fresh - and slightly jarring - all these years later. Early '70s albums had a kind of: 'Put the headphones on; we're going somewhere' - kind of vibe.

    Good morning (afternoon, evening or night), Pete. Though the SoT programming is never predictable, admittedly I had an expectation this album would show up before the series end. A perfect choice for this band to be in the Classis Album Rewind Series. Have mentioned before my younger sister brought Demons & Wizards into the house but added The Magician's Birthday to my collection shortly after its release. Great stuff and a Roger Dean cover to go with it! You're discussion of it was spot on to me. Love the start of the album with Sunrise and all the songs that followed. It remains the 'little sibling" of Demons & Wizards which likely will always hold its top spot for the band - at least to me. But those who never listened to it or have come to enjoy early Heep should be sure they take an opportunity to listen to this. Once again my thanks, Pete, for SoT programming.

    Loving this series, Pete! I suspected this might make an appearance before the end. I tend to view - and play - the "Magician's Birthday" and "Demons & Wizards" as like a double album. Love them both! The only bit that spoiled it for me was the singing "Happy Birthday" in the title track. I thought that really detracted from what is otherwise other "Demons, Wizards and Magicians" power classic track. "Salisbury" is perhaps still my favourite - it was the first Heep album I heard and bought back in the 1970s. But some monster songs on these two classic albums!

    I missed out on Uriah Heep when I was growing up. (I was born the same year as Pete.) For some reason they were relatively unknown in the US, and I almost never heard them. (I might have heard Easy Livin' once or twice on the radio.) I didn't really discover them until I was in my 40s when a Russian friend played some classic Heep for me. I couldn't believe what I had missed. Heep was just as good as the big 3 early heavy rock bands that get all the credit - Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, and Black Sabbath. But for some reason they never get mentioned in that group and never made a big impact in the US.

    • @jimmycampbell78
      @jimmycampbell78 3 года назад +2

      I have heard them described as the ‘poor man’s Deep Purple’ which is just such an unfair and ignorant comment. I guess its because they are British and have the same guitar/organ setup. I think Uriah Heep have their own distinct and unique sound. Lyrically, not knocking Deep Purple but Heep’s lyrics are better. Their albums are moodier and more proggy in spots. I definitely think they should be in a Big Five of early British hard rock along with Budgie too and those bands you mention. I think classic rock fans and reviewers do make that the case now.

    I love this album, but like you say, Pete, I think it is inferior to Demons and Wizards as well as Look at Yourself. Rain is my favorite song on the album; just gorgeous vocals and piano that showcase the unbelievable talents of Hensley and Byron. I was in high school when this album came out (same with D & W) and when I first played it back then my initial reaction was that I was disappointed. I felt the songs weren't as strong as on the previous two albums.

Only thing we heard on the radio was those big hits. Abominog was part of my discovery of the NWOBHM. Along with H&H and Gillian. Great to hear you talk so passionately about them.
