This is Australian Crawl’s Hotel California “moment”. Decades later, Unpublished Critics just doesn’t receive the recognition it deserves. Brilliant song!
If that's the case, Aussie Crawl might owe Canis Major money for using the same chord progression they used in Butterfly Queen, a year before Unpublished Critics came out.
I'm just a shy romantic with my eyes on the loose I'm in a overcoarted way A poet in a garret You know some people say Standing at the barline with my lip on the curl I'm with the other lean and lear My finger on the pulse And my hand around a beer Ah, ahh, well I don't wanna know what's going 'round here Ah, ahh, it's just a matter of time, hold it under light Ah, ahh, I've got to get away, to get away, to get away The singer in the band, you know, he sweat on a pose And he's really such a jerk Thinks he can call me stupid Because he gets a lot of work I'm standing in the background, got my arms on the fold And every dog's gonna have it's day The New Musical Express and my own 4-way P. Sorry to be a fathead and brag about this but I am proud to say that I seen these guys in the summer of 1984-5 as a 14 year old bogan surfer for their last ever tour 'The final wave tour's which ended up being the last time they played as the full band together on stage if I remember correctly. I was addicted to live music instantly with my next band being Dire Straits in 1985-6 then the angels 12xb, ACDC, Metallica 5 × tool 5 X status quo, deep purple, iron maiden, Megadeth, lamb if God, Slayer, beasty boys, faith no more, system of a down, chemical Brothers, basement Jaxx, Carl Cox, the tea party 8x foo fighters 8 X John Fogerty, hunters and collectors, Korn, white zombie, Rob Zombie, powder finger, 10 X John Butler trio 10x etc etc 😂 then the 12 big day outs, 2 soundwave festivals, and 4 X rockit concerts and more etc etc and etceteras. This is approximately half of the actual list of bands and amount of times seeing them. Aren't I lucky I love music soooo much and from the age of 2 years young I didn't look back when I fell in love with Suzie Quatro and that was off the top of my head. Ha! Nearly 40 years later I need to see more live music and I will rock hard and on until I drop. If anyone reads this to the end without boredom etc, Thanks. I hope It's not to self like sounding to read etc.🤞🤞 Yours sincerely, musically, Respectfully to the whole world, Brendan McMusicisno.1. Aman who must listen to music every day of his life, Amen 👍👍🤘🤘👌🙏🍀✌️
Poor old James everyone has always hammered him about understanding what he's singing, but if you read the lyrics & then watch any of the clips again, the mystery will lessen for you! On a more serious note, as a late teen/early 20s at the time, it was great to sing along to when you pissed at the pub, you didn't have to remember any words, just make the appropriate noises in time with the music.....perfect!!
LOL that was perfect specially for a Brazilian fan that did not know to speak or understand english language in the 80s n 90s. It was super fun and now I can sing almost as good in english as James!! KKKKKK
This is Australian Crawl’s “Hotel California” moment. I still don’t understand why Unpublished Critics doesn’t get the recognition it deserves. Brilliant song!
I never thought GnR ripped this off. The progression and vocal phrasing has been used often in rock music. What I do like is that the scandal introduced a whole bunch of new people to this song specifically, and Crawl generally, because this would be my favourite Crawl song if not for “Downhearted” and I love the band deeply. RIP Guy and Brad, both long gone, neither ever forgotten.
It’s more about the styling than the progression, and there’s more to it than that anyway. Were you aware that G&R were stated Oz Rock fans and that both bands shared a label? Also compare their styling of “ Knockin’ on heaven’s door” and then compare it to Cold Chisel’s earlier version.
Can remember the old joke: Whats the difference between nuclear physics and James Reyne? If ya try really really really hard, you can understand nuclear physics. (I'm a massive fan btw... a kick ass assemblage of musicians)
@@thedys70 They were signed by Geffen Records as were GnR and Nirvana. Check out Daughters of the Northern Coast and tell me that Nirvana didn't rip the intro off for smells like teen spirit. Some shady shit was going on at geffen.
It's a little similar to Sweet Child O' Mine but I wouldn't call it a court case and I seriously doubt Slash ever heard this obscure song from Australia and decided to rip it off. No offense but you couldn't get Aussie FM radio reception in Los Angeles no matter how big your antenna was.😆
They were on the same label so there is a chance but... . it's a very common chord progression that has been used countless times so there will always be coincidences. Simon Binks said that it's a coincidence and since he wrote the music I'm pretty sure he's be the best to judge. Both songs are great, so let's just enjoy them.
This was at the old St Moritz ice ring which became the venue in St Kilda where the novatel now stands. Saw The Cult play there also and many many other bands. Used to hold around 1200 venue capacity

If it went 3:50 instead of 5:15 it would've been mega. Great song.

Simon Binks in his day was a very very good electric guitar player. He contributed much to this great Aussie rock band's sound I reckon.

First child o'mine
I'm patiently waiting for the English lyrics version to be released.
great memories of bonging on in the 80s
I saw the last concert these guys did in Perth 1986.
Pure Aussie pub music 10 beers ,time for a couple a bourbons
Oh...ouoo... sweet child o mine
If you take the time the lyrics are great. And as a big GnR fan yeah it’s sweet child o mine.
sweet child o mine came out in 1987, Australian crawl broke up in 1986, this was '82

Also G&R were self declared OzRock fans ,so yeah, changes things a little. Also it’smore to do with the styling than the progession itself.
