To say that Joni is a legend is an understatement. She’s the true definition of the word artist. It doesn’t matter how far back you go…whatever era…you will fall in love.
I connected with her just from this track alone. It was so deep and just so... soft. But not bad soft. I can't really describe it. But I'm definitely listening to more. She was amazing!
One of the better concerts ever captured on film. Joni was at the peak of her performance powers, with a band to die for. Check out “Amelia” from this concert…chills!
You have just scratched the surface of the greatness that is Joni Mitchell. Painter, poet, singer, lyricist. She has been in my life for over 50 years. You are in for a hell of a ride. "Case of you", "Amelia" , "Yellow Taxi", the list is endless. The band she put together for this concert is out of this world !
Joni performed on Grammys last night. She started as folk singer. She did Circle Game in response to fellow Canadian Neil Young song Sugar Mountain. She considers herself a painter first. She created several tunings for guitar partially for having polio as child (like Neil). Led Zeppelin wrote Going to California for her. She expanded to jazz gaining support of jazz artists. She suffered brain aneurysm several years ago and was in coma for several days. She relearned her music and walking and will perform first full show in over 30 years this summer at Hollywood Bowl. Jaco was in Weather Report. He is considered best electric bassist ever. There is video of Joni on Dick Cavett Show filmed on Monday Woodstock ended. She missed performing there because her manager didn’t think she could get to TV show. Many other performers were on that show while Jimi Hendrix crashed in green room, never going on. Joni performed and “For Free” will make you cry.
Tried learning one of her songs once. Got it. Played it and promptly never tried it again. Beyond me, her tunings, her rhythms, her lyrics. She has a deep deep deep catalogue like Zappa. Another lifetime’s worth of genius….
Joni is a legend well worth more of your time. Her tune "River" is often referred to as an anti xmas song, but is much more than that. From her early poetic acoustic tunes with guitar, dulcimer or piano, to the more jazzy songs such as this are all gems.
Rolling Stone named Joni Mitchell one of the top ten songwriters of all time. She has 11 Grammys, plus dozens of other awards, She is also an accomplished artist and has her self portrait on one of her albums.🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦
The same concert has a nice Pat Metheny guitar solo at the end of "Amelia", and there is a solo Jaco Pastorius spot where he quotes some Hendrix. On this song he was punctuating with his typical ringing bass harmonics. Joni invented over 50 custom guitar tunings, which were tailored to specific songs. She started in the folk genre, and incorporated more and more jazz as she developed.
I've known Jaco's family for a few decades, I even met him, Pat and Don. RIP Jaco and Don. Jaco's brother told me Jaco said they really had to hold back when touring with Joni. They're top tier jazz guys that can really cut loose when they wanted. But, touring with Joni they kept it chill out of respect and support of her. It worked out really well! You can tell she was thrilled to have these brilliant musicians touring with her.
You just got hit by Joni! It happened to me when I was 15 and I'm still a fan (I am 61). She is a true Artist. She started as a folk signer, moved to jazz/pop, got more experimental. She is a poet, singer, musician (multi instrumentist), painter. It was emotional to see her perform at Grammys yesterday at 80.
That is a massive amount of talent on that stage for sure! And yes, her lyrics are so worth reading. Poetry. And you picked right up on her use of her own voice to add even more artistry. If you watch her play the dulcimer, you’ll see how even the movement of her hands becomes part of her artistic expression. I can’t say enough good things about this amazing woman.
Lee, the album ‘Hejira’(1976) from which this song is the opener is an absolute masterpiece. Also check out ‘Black Crow’, ‘Amelia’ and ‘Refuge of the roads’.
Legends on this stage! Joni, of course -- queen of 20th century popular song writing, Pat Metheny (guitar), Jaco Pastorius (bass), Don Alias (percussion). Pat is still performing! Another lovely live performance of Joni doing Coyote is from the Last Waltz concert in '78. You must go down the Joni rabbit hole, starting from the beginning (60s).
I'm definitely gonna keep going with her. This was a great first listen. Now I really want to hear more lol. She seems super talented and interesting 🤔
@@L33Reacts If you want her solo guitar & piano days, go for the early stuff (68-72). After that, she got into a jazzier mode (74-79) working with the top cats of the day. Later on, she did a mix of many different styles. I'd start with the 68-79 material, you'll have plenty of stuff to analyze and react to, from a trailblazer with Dylan and Leonard Cohen as her only peers lyric writing wise, but topping them when it comes to music.
I'm glad you're picking up on the lyrics, L33. She's flat-out the best lyricist in pop music. Total poetry. Thanks to Jane for her suggestion, and I hope she's suggested several more tracks from this live album. In France They Kiss on Main Street shows off some of Pat Metheny's (pron. The whole Blue album is a must, but I rather think the title track would speak to Lee's past journey in life very deeply. For more uptempo, gently jazzy stuff like this one try anything else from the Hejira album, especially Amelia, or from the Court And Spark album, such as Free Man In Paris. So many great songs ...
Joni needed musicians of this caliber to back her because, as you can see, she could get pretty free-form with her arrangements. So for another musician to learn her songs they had to suss out her crazy chords, and then come up with some kind of logical framework so that they were all together harmonically. This was the peak of her jazz period, and if you like this style of Joni I'd recommend "Amelia", "Off Night Backstreet", or "Free Man in Paris".
Jaco (Jah-ko) Pat Metheny (Meth -eeny) and Lyle worked together in the 70's. Great stuff. Joni is one of greatest songwriters of all time. Since you like Coyote you should check out the album it's from, Hejira. This was the height of her 'jazz rock' period. I saw Metheny in 89 in Niagara Falls with Herbie Hancock, Jack DeJohnette and Dave Holland - great show.
“She’s a poet who sings” yes, and she paints, writes for and plays guitar, dulcimer, piano…created & taught crazy tunings to Crosby Stills and Nash among others. Great reaction Lee, it’s so cool you want to hear more. Joni’s singing was not often conversational like in Coyote, but she had the clearest voice with an amazing range, as you’ll see.

Jaco (rhymes with 'Jocko') Pastorius is an amazing bass player, I hope you'll do a deep dive on his work. Btw, 'Coyote' was Joni-speak for Boyd Elder, the artist responsible for the 'cow skulls' album cover for The Eagles. He was born and raised out here in west Texas, about 60 miles from my home 😊

Brilliant songwriter and lyricist. There's a line from another song on the same album that goes "White flags of winter chimneys wave truce against the sky." Who else writes lyrics like that? Pure poetry. This song is from her album Hejira which is one of my desert island discs. Jaco is brilliant on it. Her mix of American folk and jazz was really groundbreaking and has stood the test of time. Her backing musicians are some of the finest jazz/fusion musicians of all time. Legendary,
Shadows & Light is a fabulous live set. With that top notch backing band it's a real highlight of Joni's recordings. Amelia is another great song from this.
You should check out her singing this on the album, The Last Waltz by the group the Band. It was their fair well concert on thanksgiving in 1976. It has so many guests appearances from famous musicians. Joni Mitchell sings coyote on that album. The concert was made into a film directed by Martin Scorsese.

So much talent in those 4 people and the editing of the video clips too.. This was a great time for her career. She went thru so many different incarnations. All amazing stuff
