    I remember watching this game at my father's house, whose 2nd wife is of Danish origin. Her whole family was there. I was the only one of Spanish origin supporting Spain, in the middle of some 20 Vikings. LOL. Obviously my father was beside them.
    I was sure that Spain would be slaughtered. But I was astonished for each goal from Butragueño, until the final massacre.
    La Furia had given my soul great redemption. It was beautiful.
    And in the end, I drank a lot with the Danes, very friendly, who took everything in a very good mood. Unforgettable day.

    I know Germany beat Brazil 7-1 last year but for me this remains the most astonishing collapse in World Cup history...because while Brazil 2014 was an average side fortunate to reach the semi-final, this Denmark side was truly brilliant and many (including myself) expected them to win the trophy in 86, especially after their first-round performances.

    • @FabianRuni
      @FabianRuni 8 лет назад +15

      +hugodrax71 Yep; look at the Denmark v Germany game. Denmark's world cup ended when their controlling influence, Frank Arnesen, was sent off needlessly after a cynical clash and response from Lothar Matteus. Also, remember this was the knock-out stages and having given 2 poor goals away, probably through naivety, at 3-1 they were chasing the game and committing men forward in the last 15 minutes. Spain countered them and picked them off. I would hazard that after the group stages, and with that Spanish side continually flattering to deceive, over-confidence may also have contributed.

      +hugodrax71
      Simple explanation: That's football. Denmark did not use their chances and/or Spain was lucky - whichever way you want to put it. On the other hand Spain needed 4 or 5 opportunities to score the first 3 goals. That's just happening sometimes ...
      WC winners usually need a good share of luck except for outstanding class sides like Brazil 1970.

      +hugodrax71Agree that the Danish played by far the most exiting play. So what could happen? This happened:
      The spanish trainer answered to the press which team he would prefer:" Better the danish than the german."
      How could he say this? The danish showed before their excellent play in the midfield what was the starting point of their brillant attacks. The spanish trainer had a plan against this.
      His players destroyed the superb danish by a superieur legwork, destroying any plan of the danish. They were immediatly attacked, if they got the ball. They were unable to construct their play which was so feared by the other teams. Losing their plan the danish got complete irritated.
      After them they were an easy prey.

      +hugodrax71 I didn't exactly think they were favorites to win the cup, but yes, I was surprised at this outcome and always thought Arnesen was missed more than expected. Probably they lacked experience as well. They played marvelous football, started to believe in all the hype around them and forgot games at this stage were won the hard way. I'd say they died in their beauty. But this Danmark team will always be one of my favorites to watch and remember.

    Despite this defeat, Denmark's philosophy is admirable. It was their first Mundial and they gave full speed. Here they ran out of steam. Players have said afterwards that they were satisfied with getting to the second round and had homesickness after six points (of six possible) in the group play.

    I remember this as being a complete shock. I dont think Spain were the superior team but the Danes just seemed to implode here. Denmark had ripped apart the group of death with a brand of dynamic football that even the Brazilians couldn't match. Given their performances in Euro 84 and in the group stages of this compo I would say Denmark were dark horses to win the world cup. Sadly one of my favourite sides of all time were on a downer after this as age got the better of many of their finest players like Busk, Bergreen, Bertelsen, Elkjaer, Lerby & Olsen. The team of 1992 that actually won the Euros was vastly inferior!

      Yes. We were all in shock. On paper Spain were the favorites but Danmark was the surprise team of this world cup. They played really good football and defeated the Germans in the group stage. Looking at this footage it seems to me Danmark didn't really have a gameplan, let alone plan B. They were an excellent crew, capable of great things, but weren't as nearly as organized as they should have been. As if they started to believe they were untouchable and forgot it was down to hard work and concentration. Their defending was poor, their finishing let them down and they ran out of steam. Nonetheless I still remember them fondly, same as USSR and England. Overall the football was great.

      They were very naive. They had a group of top-quality creative and offence-oriented players but sb forgot to inform them that they had to pay attention to their rear as well, especially against a striker as fast as Butragueno, who could absolutely 'kill' you on the counter-attack. Two of the goals the Spanish scored were 'gifts' of the Danish defence; extremely silly and childish mistakes.

      Coincido parcialmente. Porque es cierto que el inexplicable error de Jesper Olsen (tal vez le deslumbró el sol o tal vez no vio a Butragueño) al borde del descanso fue un mazazo.
      Pero un equipo que es la revelación y aspira a llegar lejos NO puede hundirse ante la primera adversidad. Y se hundieron, evidenciando así una notable fragilidad mental y eso que iban empatados, pero es que aun cuando hubiesen ido perdiendo.
      Dinamarca tenía un equipazo pero psicólogamente inconsistente. Mientras le fue todo bien en la fase de grupos no tuvo problema. Pero cuando hubo de afrontar la primera adversidad se diluyó de modo decepcionante (por suerte para nosotros claro) .

    When Spain went 2-1 up that's when Denmark lost their heads and started chasing the game . Spain simply hit them on wave after wave of counter attacks , and the Danes wilted in the searing heat (many of the Danish team were well into their thirties ). That said , the Danish team between roughly 83-86 was fantastic , and much like the Brazil team of 81-82 , they won nothing but really caught the imagination of fans over the world .

    La FIFA fue muy muy injusta con España en su pelicula oficial de aquel año. Apenas se habló de aquel equipo español en la pelicula, mientras que a la derrumbada Dinamarca se le dieron muchos más minutos. España era el único equipo que podría haber parado a la Argentina del magno Diego Armando Maradona. Hubiese sido un gran partido ese pero el destino quiso que en semifinales España perdiese ante Bélgica en la tanda de penaltis. Al final Argentina ganó aquel mundial con un grandísimo Maradona en sus filas...

      BlackCrowNavajo... porque Goicoexea tenía mas experiencia y se quería asegurar el partido. Luego, el segundo penalti si lo tira Butragueño porque el resultado ya era muy amplio, además, que al lograr el gol Butragueño se ponía como máximo goleador del campeonato con 5 goles, por eso lo tiró... y marcó.

    Ilusionó para campeón mundial, éste equipo de Dinamarca de 1986, se le comparaba a la sorprendente ''NARANJA MECÁNICA'' DE HOLANDA DE 1974 y 1978, tenía esta Dinamarca un fútbol casi total, como esa NARANJA MECÁNICA de HOLANDA del 74 y 78, yo soy nacido en Santa Marta, Colombia, y me gusta el fútbol exquisito y sincronizado que practicaron estos equipos europeos, fue frustante para mí, y obviamente para muchos que Dinamarca quedara eliminada y con semejante goleada contra España, en ese partido fue clave de la derrota de Dinamarca la ausencia de Nielsen, gran estrella habilidoso, que fue también clave contra Uruguay pero por acumulación de tarjetas amarillas no pudo estar en este partido, y creo que Michael Laudrup tampoco estuvo en ese partido, así que también eso influyó, y para nada España pasó a la siguiente fase porque fue eliminada, su papel destacado fue haber eliminado a una selección Danesa considerada favorita por su maravilloso fútbol, y HABERNOS FRUSTADO LOS AMANTES DEL BUEN FÚTBOL Y ESPECTÁCULO , DE VER MÁS ALLÁ DE LOS CUARTOS DE FINAL A ESTE EQUIPAZO DE DINAMARCA, parecería que lo que pasó contra España fuera un accidente, que lamentable, y que triste estuve yo ese día que perdieron esta selección Danesa.

    • @luisfernandolucargonzalez1732
      @luisfernandolucargonzalez1732 4 года назад +1

      Así es. La goleada de España fue un accidente, no un reflejo de la realidad de ambas selecciones. Cuanto dolió esa derrota de Dinamarca a los amantes del buen futbol. Hasta el día de hoy me sigo preguntando que les pasó a los daneses ese día. Aunque a favor de los españoles está que dos años antes, en la Eurocopa de 1984, España había derrotado en semifinales a Dinamarca vía penales. Y ese día del partido del mundial, España ejerció mucha presión y no dejaban de correr los españoles, así llego el primer gol de Butragueño. Una aclaración: Michael Laudrup sí jugó ese partido.
