I saw this band in 1980. It's still one of the greatest concerts of my life. An awesomely tight band. Nick Magnus on Keys, John Shearer on drums made our hearts pound (he threw his sticks into the crowd at the end), Chas Cronk of the Strawbs on bass (though it might be Dick Cadbury on this vid), brother John on flute and of course Steve's magic Guitar. He had an Optigan on stage and they did "Sentimental Instituion." I had to go to the restroom at one point. The whole building was shaking!
Steve Hackett always puts the music before the guitar playing, even though his guitar playing is amazing, the composition and feel of the piece always comes first before showing off with guitar tricks. Although this may be why he didn't get much attention for using tapping and such years before they became famous and popular, it's also why he continues to release incredible, inspiring music long after many of his contemporaries have stopped being relevant. Genius musician, fantastic music.
merci Steve , i was in Montreal 1981 Steve Hackett and brother John in stage , my God they play Voyage Of The Acolyte Live my God , best show of my life
I was there in Montreux and was practically right behind the front cameraman. Steve gave me a smile precisely on this song as he could see how estatic I was during this rendition of probably his most amazing tune! Roger Salem
Most simple theme (it seems). Brilliant song. Still goosebumps after thirty years. This song is always with my family as we named our cat after this one: Steppes. Eacht step she takes the song is in our minds. Cats are as mysterious as the song. But also nice and friendly. Unearthly .... Man......
Steve, is and will be a figure who influenced me leaving an indelible mark on my playing the guitar and my songs, with a unique and personal sound. Synonyms that represent it would be: grand, enigmatic, creative, deep, ethereal, amazing and ... not know how many more! . Thank you Steve!
Saw Steve Hackett at the Rialto Theater in Pasadena on this tour I think it was 1980. Superlative to say the least. Great concert / small venue. Did a great rendition of clocks too. He gets so much out of each note. Incomparable style.
The 2 guys who influenced Genesis the most(in positive ways) were Mr. Hackett and Anthony Phillips before him. It was amazing that they could lose one great guitarist and then get another one who is as equally talented. They have both done alot of brilliant work as solo artists as well. I would love to see them do something together. How great would that be, eh?
Damn right! Actually after Gabriel's departure Genesis music was still great just because of his playing and writing music. His music is better than all Gabriel. Collins, Mike and the Mechanics and Tony Banks' albums together.
Gotta give it to the Howe. He's just more technically advanced...but when you get two awesome guitarists together and no one cares who's better(unless you come out with GTR *sigh*).
@SirAtkins Boring!? Are you out of your tiny mind? Some people just can't appreciate subtley and dynamics in music can they? How do you expect to have any impact if everything is just loud all the time? The flute is alot like Ravel, pure genius!
It is just too bad Hackett and the rest of the Genesis could not of kept going writing music into the 80's. I could only wonder what it would of turned out like. Well, this would give a bit of an idea I suppose because there is much Genesis left in him here and in the rest of the band. Balancing commercial and artistic success would of been one of the challenges. Current Genesis is satisfied with Commercial and Steve is a purist and gets off on artistic success. Hmmmm could of been interesting.
Steve Hackett: A picture of integrity, modesty, skill and musical taste. You can't beat that.

Roger Salem
He must be one of the most talented and yet most underrated musicians and especially guitarists.
Not underestimated believe me

Excelente video y canción, es una de mis favoritas de Hackett, sólo misica original, esta bien chingona!
Love the way the songs builds and builds into the final chilling minute.
oh man, that intro just sets this song up for something of sheer brilliance. Hackett is a master, he made the wise choice of leaving Genesis.
Can't watch this enough!! Awesome...

I agree. Two greats musicians...

Steve Hackett for a Knighthood!
Meraviglioso!!!! :-)
OMG watch the stepps !!!....
Master.
That was fuckin funny, the way he looked into the camera and just smirked. As if he were saying "you like what I am doing?" hahaha
I've spent so much of my life being unable to watch my guitar hero in action. RUclips has been *awesome*!
I like the whammy-tap!
Great stuff. Very reminiscent of Terje Rypdal's music.
Cousin John, your drumming has always amazed me.
una y otra vez
When he was a genius
1:32-1:42 Sounds kind of like Ravel's 'Bolero'.
@SFCBenny57 they did a few tracks together on steves new album... Anthony phillips plays 12 string on 'emerald and ash' awesome :)
I had never seen Steve playing a Stratocaster...
@SPeacock yeah... lol he makes me creazy!!!
... John Hackett on Flute ...

Steve reminds me of Body from the professionals
the guy on the flute is his brother Terry
Brilliant, well done uploader !
I wonder if the drummer has considered getting a bigger kit ? LOL
That's John Shearer and his kit must take a while to set up bud
Brother John looks like Richard Ramirez (the serial killer) in this clip 🤔
Defector is a great album, I also highly recommend Please Don't Touch. Quirky but excellent. Typical Hackett.
Hackett 3 Howe 22 (My 21 prog rock friends asked me to cast their votes with mine) Sorry! I guess is Howe all the way!! :P
esto es musica
is this footage available on DVD anywhere?
The Johnny Greenwood of his day??
gostaria de saber se existe este show em DVD pra comprar! se alguém souber gentileza entrar em contato comigo! grato!
John Shearer
His brother JOHN playing flute...
Damn right! Actually after Gabriel's departure Genesis music was still great just because of his playing and writing music. His music is better than all Gabriel. Collins, Mike and the Mechanics and Tony Banks' albums together.
switzerland
you're thinking of Terry Oldfield IMike's brother)
I'm pretty certain his brother is named John.
Did the camera person forget whose band it was? Sorry, it's the John Hackett band...
Dik Cadbury ..singing as well in other tracks...great though underused voice..
Steve Hackett on a stratocaster???
Hemels
