I was given this multitool by my grandfather. I still remember the gay he gave me this tool in the afternoon 15 september 2002 when i was working on my science project. He handed this to me and said: "Take this as an 6 month early birthday present." He passed in the summer of 2014. I will cherish this multi tool for as long as I live in this world.
I found an original leatherman wave at work a few years ago, didn't find the owner out of the people I cared to ask and carried it every day for like 3 years and finally lost it. At that point I basically couldn't live without it and had to get a new wave+. I've become a huge leatherman fanboy and can't function without it.
My dad always told me “the right tool for the job is the one that gets the job done”. Just bought my first Leatherman Wave plus the other day and I’m anxiously waiting its arrival in the mail. Great video!
Legit the best MT rundown vid going. Its really easy to fall into ‘super fussy, 30 minute runtime, overcooked’ when doing these vids (I have never not cringed rewatching one of my own). Good job AKB!
I feel like it was still a bit too long. I had most of the edit done but I pulled out another minute because it was repetitive. Thanks man! I have a ton of tools to do videos on.
i have the super tool and the wave + ... love them both... i also love the pocket clip that you can buy to attach to the wave... to have a multi tool in my pocket the size of a knife is key to my edc... have a great day all
I work as a handyman, and having a multi-tool on me has saved me trips back out to the van more times than I can count. More often than not I just need a couple basic tools, and a multi-tool more than suffice. Firstly I carry a gerber Center Drive, but everything you said about multi-tools in general definitely applies in my experience.
Yeah we got better stuff back in the office, but when I'm halfway across the building it's better. Plus more times than I can count, it's worked for a hammer in a pinch.
Just bought my second Wave....a Wave +.....brilliant tools....been using the "Retired" Wave since 1999....20 years old next Nov....Im a field engineer...(and camper)... and its proved invaluable....I snapped one arm of the pliers once, sent it back to Leatherman Uk..was repaired and sent back within 2 weeks....no questions asked....even though I broke it through what could be called misuse....also have an MUT which is just as good......Top review......cheers!
Thumbs up for incoming multitool reviews!!! I should be working right now, I have a meeting in 4 minutes. But instead I am watching a review on multitools I own/currently have in my pocket.
I love my Leatherman Blast, they are really well designed and made. I use mine almost every day and its never let me down. Looking forward to seeing more on the channel.
I had the original wave and loved it. Then my buddy bought a surge and i felt a little, inadequate. So i got a surge, gave my wave to my father in law, and life is good now.
Surge is good... but it's overkill for me. I have tried carrying it a few times, but the Wave is lighter and doesn't feel as bulky on my belt. Also Surges are good for heavy dutier pliering and cranking things, and also better for bigger hands.
Love the wave plus and use it a lot at work mostly because I jump from project to project and leave tools in a work space not close to most areas I end up needing to do the actual work. Great review.
I carried my letterman wave for about 5 or 6 years but yesterday a buddy accidentally dropped it in the pond he made it right gave the money to buy another one all they had was a wave + it the same but little different I like
It’s reviews like this that helped me decide on a Wave. And then become fully knife addicted. So thanks AKB. Nice to see the apprentice is earning her keep Do some T shirts.
I agree, the wave is the best all around multi tool you can buy. I have tried a lot of different models and brands over the years. It is my favorite!I lost my black oxide wave on a trip to Cuba so I will probably upgrade to the wave plus!
Gr8 video...I have the Leatherman wave and the SAK huntsman for about 10 years, there hasn't been a day that I haven't used either one, I don't leave home without them...
The Leatherman Wave is on my side from the time I put on my belt in the morning, till it's time for the Land of Nod (sleep). I have it on me at the office, walking around my downtown Apt. and of course while strolling through the forest for example. Outstanding and above Par video as Always.
I just picked up a Wave Plus (and got the extra bit kits and extender) and I couldn't be happier with this product. I tried out the Surge but the size difference (and honestly the lack of the tiny tweaker flat head and Philips) convinced me to just return the Surge and use the Wave.
Bahahaha! I was simply looking on tips how to use a multi-tool to the fullest, what i found here is one of the best review channel's I've seen yet! Hilarious and informative! Fckn awesome man, you had me learning whilst laughing my ass off. Ya i said whilst...im different and i sparkle
Wow, nice comprehensive Wave review. You hit all my points exactly. I’ve got the original Wave without the interior tool locks. My only gripe is when in the closed position, the handles have a lot of wiggle and “play” despite attempts at tightening. Still very useful tho. I can see how this review took forever to write. Well done sir! 👍
Multitool reviews like light reviews always are long, and it takes me a while to wrap my head around them. I think the handle wiggles slightly on mine, not much though. Thanks man!
A used black Wave + just popped up on Amazon. I bought it and came back here to rationalize buying my 8th Leatherman for no reason other than... black and not full price. I'm an idiot. Thank you for being here for me.
I am glad you made this review when I'm looking into replacing my pst. The color grade being off on the side by side threw me off when this is one of the prettiest channels
Color correcting this one was a challenge. It was a partially clouded day... and I inadvertently changed a setting to auto on my camera. So with the changing lighting conditions and actually shooting this over several days- it was hard to keep everything straight and color correct it. Also the Nd filter on my camera gives everything a orange ish green cast so I have to manually whip everything back in line.
I bought The Wave RIGHT before they "improved" it with the replaceable wire cutters. I still love it though. Just need a sheath that has room for the extra bits. They did fit in the fabric sheath but the fabric sheath lasted all of 30 days so they sent me a leather replacement for free.
Gr8 vid. I have the Surge and the P4 Free. I carry one or the other every day. I just ordered the new Leatherman ratchet accessory for my Surge. I'll get it on Tuesday the 30th of March. I can't wait. 🇺🇸
I picked my wave up for $22, my super tool 300 for $22, my wingman for $15, my rev for $7, and my gerber 450 sport for $9. All were purchased from Walmart on clearance.
Using relief cuts on your saw jobs will make you an Advanced Saw Bro. 👍 I've had a Wave for years as my only non-SAK multitool. Thanks for this vid as it helps validate my decision to not shop around for something better.
Very nice overview. The average bro is not going to need the TTi, since the Wave fills the role for 40% less. I do own them both because it's not a real hobby if you're not spending money.
Yeah I just bought a Spyderco that I paid over twice as much for. If the TTi weighed less and gave me something better, then I might budge. I just can't spend that much money for steel, when I already carry a second knife anyway.
I have had the wave for years as well, the only issue I have you can really pinch your hand under the folded blades if you arent careful. You have to learn to not grip it so close and get your hand caught by the hinge. otherwise it's in my EDC kit.
I use my Wave on Source Fours almost every day, and have cut a lot of tie-line as well🙂. It is always with me in the scene shop, on the catwalks, or backstage. The best tool for the job is the one you have with you at the time, so carry the best - the Wave! I have 3 of them, although I recently mailed two back to the factory. The pliers tip sometimes breaks ...
It's the perfect sound, lighting, video tool. That little tweaker helps me with video amps, and sometimes microphones... although a lot of mics nowadays have RF syncing, and digital controls, so tweakers aren't as necessary. Yep, they break sometimes... good to have a backup tool on hand, just in case.
Bro I aspire to your edc collecting level! Loved this review (dont care it was long, no wasted space) and I love the subtle beer review hints you put in. At least I think that's what that was.... o yeah and you killed that mosquito like a savage bro
For a shot of the removable set of wire cutters? Have you thought about anger management jacks raging bile duct? A brief verbal description or quick shot of it are all pretty adequate for such a minor thing.
@@AdvancedKnifeBro It about so much more than the interchangeable cutters ... it's the newness ... the newness damn you. Never ... never negate the power of the newness.
I hadn't considered a katana as part of my EDC and I wasn't aware that you could get that much use out of one. Could you please do a video about Katana carry?
I cut down a 7ft Noble Fir Christmas tree a few years ago with the saw on my Charge Ti (same one I believe) because I'm stupid. But that behavior was rewarded with Christmas and presents and a baby Jesus, so I'll probably do it again someday.
I have a wave but I don't like to carry it because it's expensive to lose. I carry a REV. It's everything I need. I've got some industry specific tools in my tool box, but I use the Rev for everything.
While watching I was thinking about when exactly I bought my Wave (After I lost my Pulse...) and at 05:45 I paused the video to check the date. September 1998. I was off by a year. My loyal need in help is a year older than I thought. So now I can celebrate its 20th birthmonth next month! And then it can cut its own cake :)
My first Leatherman was the new Surge. When someone stole it I tried a bunch of other modells but I eventually ended up buying another Surge its big but for all that bulk you get the most complete tool in production.
The new Wave has been my EDC for six years as well. (black oxide) And I have been through 3 nylon sheathes with it. My latest sheath is the coyote brown version, but mostly pocket clip carry to save my cash for other things such as the bit-kit and extender (which I now have 'cause I'm a multi-tool nerd too) Also own the New Surge, PS4, (and just for fun) the Brewser. Oh, how I love these MT's!
I don’t disagree with either of you- when I initially purchased the wave- price was pretty important to me. A lot of saner reviews said same tool better steel. At the time I was like- who cares!
Having both a wave and charge tti I must say that somehow I prefer the way the charge feels in the hand when using the exterior tools (slightly rounder corners?). The only real difference I can spot between mine is that the charge has one of those hook cutter things on the serrated blade. Oh and the reason I have both, well let's just say... I once thought I had lost my leatherman wave after a trip. Spent time looking, couldn't find it, checked online "hey with this discount the charge tti isn't much more expensive" proceeded to buy it. And a few days after it was delivered I found my wave again in some stupid compartment of the backpack that it didn't belong in. Can't complain though it was my own stupidity, now I've permanently got the wave, extended driver and bit sets in the hiking bag. And my charge tti gets to be carried around on belt/in pockets on a regular basis.
@@extrastuff9463 how does the charge tti feel in the pocket? It's not considered pocket sized, and people often say the charge is really bulky and too big for the pocket, but it's not much larger than the charge.
@@user-md3is4dq2d I wouldn't consider it pocket size, not for jeans at least maybe in cargo pants. Mine is usually in the left hip strap pouch of my backpack or if I really expect to need it without my backpack on the belt instead in the nylon holster (with bit set + extended driver). For jeans pocket carry I wouldn't exceed the juice product line style.
I've had a Leatherman Blast since '05. Like you, I also broke the large screwdriver (prying). Leatherman replaced it. Good advice on the replaceable wirecutters, as I did manage to fuck mine up. They still work. Mostly. I considered "upgrading" many times, but couldn't justify it.
I have not. We don’t deal with a whole lot of lighting and I usually just let it burn- or stick to touching the lenses if they’ve been on a while. If I was still working large shows that deal with a lot of lights maybe I’d have a good pair.
If you think the better blade steel is. If I were buying a tool today maybe I’d get be charge- although I’d be hard pressed to say the wave hasn’t met my needs.
You should add the skeletool to the conversation. Although it's not as versatile I find it super useful. A everything you need and nothing you don't imo, minus the carabeaner thing. And a pocket clip.
I will do a review in the coming months. Now that I have the wave out of the way, I can do some other stuff now. I just sent the old Wave off to Leatherman for a repair today.
I used the SOG twitch pliers for a year. Good concept bad execution. I switched to the Leatherman OHT because of its "beefiness". So far so good. This has nothing to do with this video review so... Thanks.
The "New" wave was given to me as a gift about 8 years ago, I didn't realize the quality of this multi-tool at the time, so my smug "oh cool, um thanks" really makes me think how much of an ignorant asshole I must have look liked to the guy who gave me this... So to him I'm really sorry 😂 his words were true, "she'll come in handy, when you need it you need it just keep it around" and yes this doodad has gotten me out of a handful of situations. Never knew about the warranty either good to know appreciate it 🤙
I don't usually carry tools in my pockets but when I do, I carry a 7" Knipex cobra and a screwdriver. I should have gotten the 5" but I thought I would need more leverage to strip the really stubborn nuts.
Any other left-handers notice that because Leatherman leaves the liner lock Exposed on their tools the first knuckle of your index finger can press it and unlock the blade in use? I've noticed this at least on the wave surge and skeletool.
@Jorn Navarre Unfortunately no. The blade tang is cut to interface with the liner lock in its current orientation only. Leatherman simply leaves too much of the lock exposed. Should run the sheet metal higher, cut a notch out for to reach a fingertip sized portion of the liner lock (like most knives) and call it done.
I do enjoy videos about multitools but as for needing one, I am not sure. I have the Sidekick in my Bag and the PS4 Squirt on on my Keychain. So far that's been enough.
alittleolder I went through 5 different model Leathermans before I realized they're not for me because they just sit around collecting dust..unless I can find a excuse to use one at home but at home if I need a tool the Leathermans offer I just use said tool..
I hear you talking my friend. I am always so happy to use it at home for any use I can find. Or use a $600 knife to open a letter and then think: "Yep, that's worth it"... but for regular Urban Carry the PS4 Squirt is more than enough but like I side.. even the Sidekick is more than I need and also would carry unless I planned to go to some wooded area or something. I spend my money for important things.. like watches which I finally got over myself and started to review...
What about the Charge?? For me it’s always been the Wave VS. the Charge. I love the charge so much I splurged on the new generation TTI Titanium Charge
Oh yeah the Charge... when I purchased the wave years ago the 40-50 premium for the charge wasn’t appealing. It’s also why I wasn’t interested in the Victorinox spirits. I’m sure nowadays I’d buy the charge- but honestly the Wave has been basically what I need. I usually carry a pocket knife with a larger blade anyway.
I've use a charge AL at work from time to time: the "seatbelt cutter" is quite handy if someone put a zip-tie at in a place you can't reach with pliers. (sounds like a rare use, but i have that surprisingly often). And it's a bit lighter and smaller than the wave.
I own the original and it is still an awesome, flexible tool. Nonetheless, I have my eye on a wave plus. I am a ham radio operator. A ham can never have too many radios, especially of the low power (QRP) variety. Same with the Leatherman and Swiss Army Knife series. :)
You should look into R.A.E. Gear sheath for the wave! Absolutely the best way to belt carry the Leatherman wave if you're not going to to use the extra compartments of the Leatherman sheats. I don't leave my house without my Wave and my Olight.
Got my wave as a Christmas present from my dad last year. Been on my belt ever since and use it everyday. Love it. Best present I've ever received.
I was issued a Wave during my time in the military. It was one of those rare pieces of gear that they were actually going to want back at the end of my last tour so I conveniently "lost" it while serving overseas. She turns 10 years old this January.

The blue lines are back. Now I can see where the tallness closed is! Thanks Advanced Ruler Bro!
My first Leatherman was the new Surge. When someone stole it I tried a bunch of other modells but I eventually ended up buying another Surge its big but for all that bulk you get the most complete tool in production.
Thumb up for revealing the date code. Mine says 0108, so January 2008? I appreciate that.
I got the original and yes it's difficult to open but it is still very usefull.
“And repeat until it’s sharp or you’ll get bored” Lmao 🤣😂🤣😂 I love it man awesome videos👍🏻👍🏻
Great vid as always
Love the commentary style 😂
The new Wave has been my EDC for six years as well. (black oxide) And I have been through 3 nylon sheathes with it. My latest sheath is the coyote brown version, but mostly pocket clip carry to save my cash for other things such as the bit-kit and extender (which I now have 'cause I'm a multi-tool nerd too)
Also own the New Surge, PS4, (and just for fun) the Brewser. Oh, how I love these MT's!
great vid
On the left? Dang thought I was cool! Interesting tool small and kinda useful
Charge tti FTW! Why? Because I spent I shitload on it. That's about it, it's pretty much a wave.
workingclassless84 haha I totally agree!!!!!! Charge TTI!
Awesome! Didn't know the manufacturer date was on there. 👍
It’s much harder to see on the waves. You need to hit it with a bright light at a hard angle to see it properly.
You should check out the RAE sheath. Basically a production model of Adam Savages aluminum quick access sheath.
Will do!
Great video 👍👍 very interesting and lots of dang I didn’t know that!😃👌
Glad it was helpful!
I carry a Wave EDC. I am a little embarrassed to say it is because it is the tool Les Stroud (Survivorman) carries in 90% of his shows.
This is way off base of your channel, but have you found a pair of gloves you prefer for load in/out + focusing the SRC4
I have not. We don’t deal with a whole lot of lighting and I usually just let it burn- or stick to touching the lenses if they’ve been on a while. If I was still working large shows that deal with a lot of lights maybe I’d have a good pair.
I'd like to see you start adding an overall circumference measurement. Lol.
ha ha! don't hold your breath!
More leatherman multi tool's please 🙏
Do you think the Charge TTI is worth the price?
If you think the better blade steel is. If I were buying a tool today maybe I’d get be charge- although I’d be hard pressed to say the wave hasn’t met my needs.
You should add the skeletool to the conversation. Although it's not as versatile I find it super useful. A everything you need and nothing you don't imo, minus the carabeaner thing. And a pocket clip.
I will do a review in the coming months. Now that I have the wave out of the way, I can do some other stuff now. I just sent the old Wave off to Leatherman for a repair today.
Kudos for the old school cartridge :)
Mega Man baby
Buying one more thing won't fill that hole? What fills the hole then?
Cocaine and hookers.
I used the SOG twitch pliers for a year. Good concept bad execution. I switched to the Leatherman OHT because of its "beefiness". So far so good. This has nothing to do with this video review so... Thanks.
I researched SOGs for a while- but nothing really ever grabbed me. I’ve heard good things about the OHT.
Never knew about the warranty either good to know appreciate it 🤙
I don't usually carry tools in my pockets but when I do, I carry a
7" Knipex cobra and a screwdriver. I should have gotten the 5" but I thought I would need more leverage to strip the really stubborn nuts.
Cargo pants?
Any other left-handers notice that because Leatherman leaves the liner lock Exposed on their tools the first knuckle of your index finger can press it and unlock the blade in use? I've noticed this at least on the wave surge and skeletool.
@Jorn Navarre Unfortunately no. The blade tang is cut to interface with the liner lock in its current orientation only. Leatherman simply leaves too much of the lock exposed. Should run the sheet metal higher, cut a notch out for to reach a fingertip sized portion of the liner lock (like most knives) and call it done.
if i buy the plus will it fill the void?
Absolutely. For about 10 minutes.
I do enjoy videos about multitools but as for needing one, I am not sure. I have the Sidekick in my Bag and the PS4 Squirt on on my Keychain. So far that's been enough.
Sounds like you have found the right ones for you then. Those are great tools.
alittleolder I went through 5 different model Leathermans before I realized they're not for me because they just sit around collecting dust..unless I can find a excuse to use one at home but at home if I need a tool the Leathermans offer I just use said tool..
My favourite pliers based multi tool is the Victorinox spirit x. I guess I’m a multi tool hipster.
One of these days I'll get one... I've been trying to find a used one for under $60 and haven't had much luck.
Really good review! I like my wave + very much. Only thing, l would have liked the blade to be s30v
A few people made me aware of this. I’ll pick it up for sure. It’s a bit steep at $30 (half the price I paid for the wave)- but it looks good.
I used to carry a PST before the rebar came out, picked one up for 33 on ebay
You're a tool. I mean that in a good way. Very useful in learning about tools. You may be a tool but you're the BEST tool for the JOB.
I'll take it!
The Wave is an all time great MT
True dat!
Oh, an English speaker who is bilingual - American and Metric. I appreciate that in a video.
I know I have a decent sized non Mercia audience so I try and add both in there.
