Hi Tom, you talked about the headers/WBS should not be linked (predecessor or successor), unfortunately MS Project allows it, what could be the possible drawbacks of this, when they are linked? Thank you

Well it creates redundancy and it can move a group of activities to a start that really does not make a lot of sense. If you already have this problem and don’t want to change for this project then review it carefully to make sure the dates all flow for the individual activities the way you want them to. In future try to avoid. Hope that helps

It is useful video. Please how you explain in subactivity "Construction" there are laborers assigned ?

      Hi Maha,
I added a labourer to the summary task because that labourer is going to be on the project for the rest of the project. Adding a resources to a summary task has advantages and disadvantages. The big advantage is that you don't have to worry about overlap of activities double counting and overallocating a single person. The disadvantage is you don't see it as readily on the activity. If you know where to look eg. the resource column you will see it.

Hi Tom, your input would be greatly appreciated; as my brain is getting muddled by overthinking it; if I have all my sub tasks linked with predecessors do I really have to make sure that they all have successors as well? Most only ever talk about predecessors.
I have several Start to Start tasks that once I’ve put the SS dependency on it, it doesn’t automatically fill in the successors field on some, even as I make way through the schedule. So I’m wondering, do ALL these SS tasks have to have a successor or can the ones that didn’t get filled in automatically by end be left blank?

Even though it sounds counterintuitive just because all your tasks have predecessors does not mean they have successors. Think of it like this walls are roughed in and electrical plumbing hvac all start after it then inspections must occur and you link plumbing and electrical to inspections but not hvac. Than even though hvac has a predecessor it does not have a successor and if it takes 3 days longer than electrical and plumbing your schedule is missing 3 day’s time. Re start to start I would be worried that the first activity in that relationship takes longer than expected at some point won’t it be impacting something else? Its not a lot of work to tie up the open ends.
      Hope that helps

enjoying your videos. I'm stuck on setup design of my project i want to resolve in MSPJ.
I'm a head trade contractor, we work on retirement villages with typically 200 villas per site, we work on multiple sites and they run for say 2 years. I want to cash flow plan these in MSPJ (we detail schedule in other software) this is business planning only.
We only perform 2 tasks per villa, supplying materials at $/m2 rate and installing the materials with a sub $/m2.
For this purpose I use 135m2 / villa.
Scheduled completion is 2 villas / week.
I want to see multiple sites and their cashflow implications.
    Whats easiest way?
How can i show contractor gets paid on 15th and 28th of each month, for work performed in previous 14 day period?
    Supplier we pay 60 days
Payments received in @ 7 days
Feel i'm missing something here ( i watched your into videos 1 - 12 and the cash flow report one), you show what i want, just can't figure the design and terms config area.
    thanks

Hi Carl, there is a fair bit to unpack. You won’t be able to get it that exacting but you can get a good sense by editing the cash flow report to weekly. There is likely a lot of things that would need to be setup. Once you have the setup create a few macros to be able to repeat relatively quickly. Ms project can help to predict cash flow issues in advance but just remember it does not replace good financial software it does ensure the financial software does align with the site though.
Wish I could help more, sounds like you are doing great work!

@@TomStephensontraining thanks, yep i'm going to run Macros and keep it a little simpler and high level to fit into the limitations
