I saw and Met Phil back in 1984-ish in Bangor, Maine, it was the first time I heard him, bought a cassette and we listened to it full blast in my 1981 Nissan Stanza. as we drove home. I had to work that night at the Portland, Maine Post office, I think I got 2 hours of sleep...rough night, but memorable for sure.
never heard of phill before since my mom showed me what she was listening back in the days. it's a freaking shame that he isn't better known for his great music and playing. i'm totaly stunned and a fan already
Phil Keaggy has never sought the spotlight. He's perfectly content being a relative unknown despite being one of the greatest guitar players of his generation.
You're still number one in my book Phil, weve been listening to so many, doing now , what you were doing years ago, you're the pioneer of so many styles and ways to express yourself, i cant wait till the kingdom is upon us, God bless you brother
In most of phil's video's, this one especially, he is basking at the foot of the Lord, giving his offering and receiving a blessing... He has shut the world out, transported to heaven's gate, and in the presents of God. And the fragrance of the Lords visitation, still lingering for us all to witness....Praise Jesus!!!!
I believe the word you were looking for was “presence”, not “presents”. They are two completely different things. You are right about this being a damn fine song anyway. Damn fine! Cheers and praise the lord!
I was born in 1995 and my mother had been playing his music for me to sleep too. Surrounded by this music my whole life. I ended up playing guitar, and learning this song a bit. and to this day I listen to him more regularly than any phase of music I've ever been into
First time I saw Phil perform live was the Beyond Nature tour. I had been playing guitar for a couple of years and this was a revelation to me about how a guitar could be played. I e seen and met Phil many many times. Always a gentle and humble soul. Truly a God given talent.
He lost it during a childhood accident involving a water pump. The special features on his “Philly Live” dvd show the pump on his family’s farm where it happened.
Since the early days that I heard of you when you were playing the master in the musician to now you are absolutely magic your Gods fingers playing through your body it is amazing you are always amazing thank you for the music
A real blessing to hear such amazing music by a guy who is so inspired by God`s amazing grace. Thank Phil for all the many years of amazing creativity :D
He makes that look so easy. Soon, when I get my glorified body.. I'll be able to do that too. I can't wait. Jesus is coming.! Brothers and Sisters.!! Hallelujah.!
this is my second Phil Keaggy song and i am doing a Keaggy marathon tonight after being at a Tommy Emmanuel concert and now hearing Phil tonight for first time wow my ears never had it so good
1st time listening to him , just by coincidence because i was searching for "Star of the county down". I don't know who he is, but this is taking acoustic guitar to a whole new level , legendary masterpiece that caught me in an euphoria from the 1st 10 seconds!
I have a similar view. Phil here popped up on my Don Ross Pandora station one day and the album version has some great violin accompaniment. This version I saw after I heard the album version, however, is quite comparable in the feeling each emits.
I actually met this wonderfully talented and super gifted gentleman after one of his concerts in Florida back in 1993 or 1994 (it's been a while and I've forgotten which of the two different years it was), I just remember that Mr. Phil Keaggy was a very nice, very friendly gentleman...just a consummate professional in every way. It really was a wonderful concert. This was a wonderful memory for me, and I hope Mr. Keaggy is still doing well.
This is my favorite acoustic guitar instrumental of all time! And “Beyond Nature” is also my Alltime favorite acoustic guitar album, simply brilliant! 👍🏻
@@BeardedBart Mostly bots. Other countries are doing it. Russia/China have entire digital bot farms polluting threads to force Marxism and crap. They did it in the academics since the 1920s/30s.
If this was when he was in Newtownards Co Down, I was there. PHENOMENAL!!! Remember him doing bag pipes as well and weaving many melodies together by recording them live and playing over them... He took the music WHEREVER he fancied... MASTERFUL #MASTER CLASS
Phil you have always been a melody master. Beyond Nature has always been one of my favorites you’ve ever written. Thank you brother for the blessings in music all these years.
Song hasn't even started playing and I hit the like button and saved it cause I mean.. come on, who has ever heard a song by Phil Keaggy they didnt like?
What a timeless musician that has been blessed by God with an amazing talent to play guitar. Amazing, you never see anyone trying to play his music because its so difficult to play!! God Bless you Phil for dedicating your great gift to God!!
There is absolutely no guitarist in the world that can play like Phil Keaggy. He is the greatest and most capable guitar player that ever lived. When I hear Phil Keaggy play, I hear the music of God Himself, who plays through Phil.
I used to have this video. This is the opening clip, I'll never forget it. This is what inspired me to learn classical-style guitar back when I was sixteen. I've seen him live twice, both amazing.
Makes me forget all about my pneumonia! Phil, you and met the Lord at around the same time, so I've heard much of your music. What gets me, as I watch online is how much you know and love your instrument. Beautiful, fascinating. Bless you.....and many thanks!
Phil Keaggy, Sir, YOU are the absolute best.! I love playing your music and you inspire me almost every time I pick up my guitar. Although I'm getting a little older and the stretches aren't as easy as they used to be! :-) Thanks!
I live there/here, lol. There is no prettier place than County Down. Sunshine is rare in these parts, but when that sun does shine, this place sparkles.
Phil mentioned that he was impressed with Michael Hedges style and incorporated aspects of it in to his playing which I believe he does without wearing it on his sleeve. Keagy will always be Keagy which is a beautiful thing.
I will never forget sitting maybe 20 feet from him at Heritage USA in Fort Mill, SC in 1985. Just him, three guitars and a Gallien Kruger. A truly great experience.
Yea Keaggy has the style and is definitely one of the unsung guitar heros in the public eye ! Can't take nothing away from him. hey and he knows who Jesus Christ is too ! Great combination !
It amazes me but who and why would someone dislike this??? Maybe I shouldn't notice or pay attention but really?? I say on what grounds. So beautiful and amazing.
Too bad about all the bickering on here. One more thing Phil is known for is being peaceable and gentle. He would be embarrassed about folks sniping at each other on this post. (I first heard him in '73 at "Adam's Apple" in Fort Wayne.
Wow, I had not seen this on RUclips until now! One of my favorites! This song always makes me have happy tears. Silly! Anyways, now that I found this song, it is going to welcome me into shabbat along with The Sojourner - On The Fly!!! Shabat shalom on this Feast of the Tabernacles! May Yah and His Son and Ruach bless all observing Yah's most last fall feast along with this Friday night shabbat! Wonderful, just wonderful music! Thank you, Mobil 4357!
County down. Hmmm I was there once, many years ago... it is in Ireland! nothing to do with "religion" get over it. What a great guitar player! WOW !!! !!! OMG.. okay G... :) give me a break... not in a religious sense... give me a break! but what a talent, and an inspiration! and a very nice Olsen.
This is a great tune and very well performed. Not matter if Phil is religous or likes peanut butter or the color green... It's just heartfelt and that's it.
I seem to recall that there was a story circulating years ago that Eddie VanHalen was once presented with a prestigious award for his guitar playing skills and when asked if he really was the best guitar player in the world he said "no, there is someone better than me". When pressed for the answer, he stated it was Phil Keagy. I don't know how true this is.
A Legend in the Tri~state area since the 70's.not sure if He ever played or recorded with the The Talbot brothers.....which I think would have been sweet. Phil has always been a channel for the thirsty.
I have his Guitar Recorded Version tablature book and his stuff is extremely difficult to play, especially his guitar solos and downright weird chords and how quickly he transitions from each one. For instance, one part in March of the Clouds is killer because of the runs, speed, and precision involved. Although, I can play Let Everything Else Go and part of Cajon Pass. Trust me, his stuff is a challenge to any guitarist of any style! No joke!
The thing about guys like him (including Emmanuel, Kottke, etc...) is that although its a given that decades of hard work have gone into perfecting their syle and clarity of play, that their work is SO good...SO GD Good...that it makes guys like me just want to pitch our guitars in the fireplace and forget it....one wants to believe they can get to be that good, but few...very few get to that level....
Its impossible not to acknowledge this man as a keen guitarist and one of the best around! AS well as Bruce Cockburn because of their Christian faith a turn off for people but regardless of their beliefs or others lack of any you have to acknowledge their skills on guitar!Phils one of the top notch ones if you don't care for his songs you can at least acknowledge his prowess as a guitarist! It's a joy to watch Phil play!
Don't be so hard on yourself you all. I've studied this instructional video and then played the song in church plus castle's call/pilgrim's flight on another Sunday. Since few of them have heard PK play, they thought I was very good. It makes me thrilled just to play it 25% as good. I had an Ensoniq DP/2 on County Down using a little bit of etherial echo & delay which goes a long way toward making one sound 75% as good.
I can watch him play all day. One of the worst CD reviews I ever read was from a Family Christian catalog that said one his new albums, was "a good listen but doesn't offer much reason to come back to after the first listen" or something like that. I was like, COME ON. This guy is insane! The album this was song was from...I could and have listened to it all day and I learn something new about guitar and music in general everytime I listen to it.
I don't know why I haven't explored Phil's music much since I am a player and have access to YT for several years. I guess I have to catch up. Sounds a lot like Micheal Hedges

It's not actually that hard a tune to play. Maybe 4/10 difficulty. Easily learnable.

Good follow up to Hedges!!...with a mix of Bruce Cockburn folky style of playing!!...love that stuff, very inspiring!!...
Phil used to play with a group called glass harp worked with his brother he is one of the best
Phil's been around for a long time. One of the heroes of Christian music. Very devoted to Christ. One of the best guitar players I've ever heard
This is gold! He is a legend!
excellent not only in performance but in composition
Thanks for posting this. No matter what you may believe, this song is still beautiful.
One of the pretties acoustic guitar pieces I've ever heard... just beautiful.

6 dislikes? You don't just stumble across a Phil Keaggy video, you guys are either deaf or insane.
Insane jealousy.
I think people just go around disliking stuff to piss everybody off. Idk

Word! most brilliant guitarist in history in my humble!
Can't see those dislikes anymore--this comment is ten years old!
Anyone who has attempted to write a song should appreciate Phil's skill at arrangements as well as his performances.
I’ve heard that many modern guitarists rock etc, considered him as one of the best guitarist.

The ones that clicked the thumbs down are just jealous they cannot play this good :)

Omg it’s beautiful, this man is truly gifted at what he does. He makes it look so smooth and easy...
His playing gives me total awe! I feel incredibly peaceful when listening to his music!
He will always be my favorite guitarist!
Gorgeous. Praise God.
Truly... Phil is blessed and anointed by God. He's doing exactly what God created him for...
A complete master with the acoustic. The songs from this albums still stand up to the modern masters like: Andy Mckee, Don Ross and Leo Kottke
Phil Keaggy is just unreal.
This is one of my favorite CDs of his. Absolutely amazing to watch in concert.
Wow !. I've been listening to this for years , not even knowing it's title . Very cool to see it . A real favorite acoustic number !.

in addition to all the talent he has its still amazing hes missing a finger and plays this well
That is correct. County Down and County Claire are both in DADGAD.
They must be typos, as no one in their right minds could possibly dislike this wonderful, God inspired music!
Can we keep this about music?
I agree. Let's discuss in-depth theological debates in another venue and just listen to and discuss the great music that is freely given to us here.
