Infamous lag in cruze is very very evident here. Get remapped for better low end punch. TDI's, TDCI rocks in these kind of roads. Instant torque helps in climbing the ghats effortlessly. My 1.6S Fiesta climbs without breaking a sweat in 2nd gear.

The updated engine of Cruze doesn't have low end lag thankfully the one that we have (2012). It doesn't pull as fast as the old Cruze in the first 2 gears though due to gearing. I believe contractor abuzars Cruze is 2011 which had an update to the ECU from the factory for turbo lag but it didn't do much.

Was a common place to floor in the late 1980s with a car called 118NE in such road situations with 4 men onboard. She had a super smooth Nissan engine, clutch and gearbox. RWD experience was matchless. I think today the gear ratios are purposely made tall for greater efficiency and high cruising speeds which make things kinda uneasy in such situations. You have a strong car but it was under-rated here.
My native is Ooty and I drive in these kinda roads everyday with my tata Ultroz. And guys those pin bends are the best part when I drive , I enjoy driving here. And I will always drive in these roads at an average speed of 50-60km like a maniac.
Although diesels have that torque that turbo lag is just irritating mann 😂🤦🤦😭
N/A petrol engines r way better to drive in ghat road and especially in city road. .bcause they has power from 0 - top rpm. No flat spot of power

When they say drive only in 2nd gear, it means while coming downhill. Higher gears and no gear (yeah some people try this) leads to brake failures. Its a given that uphill will require first gear majorly.
Had I seen this video before, I would’ve taken the Gudalur route to Ooty last month. I drove a 1.0 TSI Kushaq on this with AC on and sweating like hell because of the stress😂. Had another group of friends in a Figo aspire who had stopped due to overheating at a place where it is straight near a village. The road didn’t look steep so I stopped to ask what happened. And then I could not start going forward even though it was not looking steep! After that I turned off AC and continued! The 1.0 TSi has the same turbo lag problem in 2nd gear.

It's the steepest road in south india. So don't compare this masinagudi to Ooty route any other ghat route. Literally have to drive in 1st gear for 30kms.
Apart from local residents other registered cars are not allowed to go down the hill. So one must understand how steep it would be.
I tried with swift, Innova, ertiga. All these cars cried. Civic was the best.
that's why naturally aspirated engines are best, i did ooty tour on my s cross 1.5 ltr petrol effortlessly.

My Verna 1.6D does these ghats effortlessly. I got around 16kmpl overall after climbing ghats at 60-70kmph😀
No car can give you 16 on this ghat, the steepness is not evident to camera.

The road you travelled is the most dangerous road in Ooty. It's kallhatti road.. Many accidents takes places as is tough to drive here and some times due to break failures.. Cops usually don't allow other state vehicles expect local vehicles whikeyu come back way from Ooty to Masinagudi..

I've went with my brezza diesel with 6people on board man you need to floor the gas in 1st to avoid the turbolag to get to 2nd gear if i go under 2k rpm in 2nd gear car wont' climb. Always keep the car above the turbo lag👍

Those hills are mostly covered with Nilgiri trees and that's y it's called Nilgiris...

parking on steep hill, or even slippy hill the handbrake may not be enough to hold car, ive been on steep forest track put handbrake on it just slid back but i had to exit car to clear fallen branch. leave it in a gear, 1st or R depending if you pointing up or down hill, it means you have all 4 wheels locked, handbrake well the normal ones jut lock rear wheels, electric handbrake some lock all wheels. so parking brake not enough grip or to weak put it in gear engine off hand brake on but last resort as cars can pop out gear but maybe enough time to put rocks behind wheels or to clear road and get back in but always handy to know
I drove this ghat with my i10 nios, with 4 people and luggage. Didn’t expected it to be that steep . Even 1st gear was begging for mercy. Had to stop once for engine overheat. Quiet an exhilarating experience though.

No need to pull handbrake so hard when you put the car in gear and turn it off….
