100% cotton with at least a 1000 thread count, no less. Best investment ever made, 20 years on I still have them.

1,000 thread will only do in winter. For the rest of the year it’s too heavy and too hot, for me anyway. But I agree that good bedclothes are a prerequisite of good sleeping .

I buy white sheets with a high thread count. I wash them in hot water and bleach. I have been doing this for years. It is well worth the money for 1000 thread count sheets. I find them at Ross Stores for under $50 a set of queen size. Nothing feels better than getting into bed with clean sheets. I wash mine once weekly.

Good quality cotton sheets=yes. But as someone with asthma, I recommend a high quality allergy control mattress cover/protector…it’s a must, especially with a new mattress. Same goes for pillows.

I use bamboo sheets. High thread count doesn’t allow for breathability.

My bed is one place I splurge on. Also I have my mattress enclosed in a cover that blocks anything from getting into it and keeps it from getting dust mites, and other types of things. I love soft cotton sheets. I would never use anything else.

I've tried microfiber sheets but didn't like the way they felt. They were too hot on my skin. I went right back to cotton.

Great subject Dr. Hansen. Freshly laundered, high thread count cotton sheets put me to sleep within minutes.

There are many other natural materials (silk, bamboo, linen, etc.) made into sheets yet there is no mention of them.
Thread count is not a magic number. You should also consider the type of cotton, the quality of the yarn, the type of weave, and the quality of the production.

When I was a very young child my grandmother always boiled the sheets & towels in the old black kettle and then dry in the sun. Cotton is King!

I agree with all Dr. Hansen and I went through out my wardrobe to do the same, sox, underwear, shirts and pants you name it done. Deciding to walk away from soooo much clothes was huge but my health is worth more.
Now finding brands that uphold my standard has been tough.

Great video and topic! Dr Mike what about the actual bedding and pillow materials? Some of the chemicals found in foam can be bad and don't actually have an odor like isocyanates, I think we'd all like to know your thoughts on the rest of our beds 😎

I have had eczema forever. It’s been infected so badly I’ve needed weeks of antibiotics. I tend to get skin abscesses if I don’t wash everything I wear in very warm/hot water. I always buy 100% cotton percale sheets, just like I wear mostly cotton clothing. Synthetic materials irritate my skin.

Dr. Hanson. I was diagnosed with Arachnoiditis in February 2024. Have had five back surgeries in past. Four of those fusions and in December had s/I joint fusion. It was from the lateral approach. Something happened and it caused a cascade of problems leading to MRI which showed clumping of cauda spinal nerve roots in distal lumbar. Resulting in Arachnoiditis. I had vision changes leading to prisms having to be placed in my lens. I have motor sounds in my head. My mind or my thinking is muttled. I have severe bowel and bladder issues. I left out the pain because I can’t even start to describe what and how that is. I wear a butrans patch and take oral opiates. Want to get started on the path to a neuro stimulator. My questions are how does Arachnoiditis affect the vision and hearing. These nerves are above the lumbar area. I also would like to know how a neuro stimulator works and how it helps this pain. Thank you

i get you wanted to mention the benefits of cotton and put cotton in this really good light, but for the sake of balance also remember that cotton requires a lot of water to grow which can put a strain on the local and neighboring areas, friendlyjordies did some investigation on this with australian cotton farms. Then there is the fact that, unless it is organic cotton, a lot of pesticides will used which aren't exactly friendly to the environment.

How often do you wash your blankets? The whole point of sheets is that they're easy to change and launder. Usually folks don't wash blankets, bedspreads, comforters, or quilts more than once or twice a year. Whatever touches your skin should be washed weekly--so if you want to wash your blankets every week, then go for it.
