In this video we unbox, setup, and playtest an xTool M1 smart laser engraver and vinyl cutter. This is the next step up from the D1 in the xTool line of laser cutters -- we setup the xTool D1 5W a few days ago, and you can see that video on our RUclips channel.
For those unfamiliar with laser cutters and engravers, these machines use a thin, focused laser beam to cut away material, enabling it to cut and engrave thicker things than you can do with a blade cutting machine. Interestingly, the M1 ALSO has a blade cutting mechanism, which claims to be able to cut vinyl, too! So the xTool M1 is marketed as a "craft machine." So, in theory, the M1 can do the things a Cricut Maker cutting machine can do, but thicker ... maybe. That's what we're going to find out today.
The xTool M1 is mid-range diode laser. The M1's laser has a ten watt output, which is twice as strong as the D1 we reviewed a few days ago. A laser this strong is capable of cutting a 10mm thick wood panel in one pass, which is just under half an inch thick -- compare that to the 5watt D1 which could only do a 3mm thick wood panel in one pass. At the time we're making this video, the M1 is only available in 10 watts -- there are not more powerful versions of the M1.
We paid just over $1000 for this diode laser cutter, so it's price is on par with a Glowforge Aura, which we've also reviewed -- see that review at jennifermaker.com/glowforge-aura.
Now we are going to unbox this xTool M1 laser machine this live and in real-time, so you can truly see what the experience to set it up is like -- so this won't be a polished video that glosses over issues and makes it all seem super simple. Our goal is to show you what it is really like to set up an inexpensive laser cutter like this and get it going. It's important to note that while we've been using laser cutters for years, we have not ever set up or used an xTool M1, although we have set up the xTool d1, so we're a little ahead of a completely novice xtool suer! But our goal is to be able to do a successful test run before we finish. Will it work? Keep watching to find out!
So the xTool M1 is marketed as the world's first desktop hybrid laser & blade cutting machine, integrating Engraving, Laser Cutting and Blade Cutting into one, allowing you to do way more with a super wide range of materials. They claim it can cut 500+ materials including Wood, Vinyl, PVC, Leather, Paper, Fabric, Metal, Iron-on, Cardboard, Felt, Acrylic, and Ceramics.
The xTool M1 has a 16MP high resolution camera inside, which lets you see your project and do auto-focusing.
It's important to note that xTool is still a DIODE laser cutting machine, which is essentially an LED (Light Emitting Diode) that is SUPER bright and powerful -- the light is pushed through a lens where it is focused to a very narrow point. The xTool M1 has an ultra-fine 0.01mm Engraving precision -- this is a HIGHER precision than the xTool D1 we reviewed earlier this week, which is .06 mm.
Diode lasers cannot cut through nor engrave clear acrylics.
Safety - The laser cutter and engraver machine viewing cover can filter blue light to protect your eyes. A built-in fan with exhaust pipe quickly blows away and discharges smoke, dust, and spark
The xTool comes with its own software called Creative Space, and it works on Windows, Mac, iOS, and Android. The software is free to download and use, so it's a great way to get familiar with laser engraving and cutting before you invest in an xTool machine.

I had the M1. Not bad for beginners, but definitely not strong enough if you want to cut through MDF in one cut. I loved it for engraving but that is it. I got rid of mine, but definitely a laser to consider as your first one.

I am in the market for a laser and I am torn between the Glowforge Aura and the Xtool M1, what would you recommend? I craft for a hobby and own a Cricut Maker 3 and a Joy. I am close to retirement so I need something that is easier to learn. I heard that you have to pay a monthly fee to use the Glowforge software, is that true? I also heard that Glowforge has no customer service line, you have to email them if you need something, is that true?

Blade housing taken out when not using it..your blade is down too far…Also, the mat is sticky on both sides..But I use painters tape rolled under it to hold in place..surprising how thin it can cut and how small it can write..
