    This tutorial is like a lighthouse in the fog. You've laid out the pen n node tools in clear practical usable detail. Also I like your clear diction, no razzamataz - no fluff. Just good old fashioned tutoring, passing on of knowledge. Well done, keep up the good work. I am knew to art n knew to digital art, I need this kind of tutoring to show me the way. Thank you.

    This is an absolute gold mine. I wish I could hit thumbs up more than once. No where on the internet is there such a detailed explanation of the pen and node tools, not even in their own book.

      Hi Jim, Thank you so much for leaving such an awesome comment. I made this video because in the early days of learning Affinity Designer there wasn't any detailed videos, so alot of my knowledge has come from trial and error and the workbook. So for this video I wanted to include solutions to all the annoyances i experienced back then :)

    One of the most helpful AD tutorials I've ever come across. Everything works except for the handle manipulation described at 16:38
    I'm using the latest version, so it's possible that this is a functionality they decided to remove, although I can't imagine why since it looks like a useful time saver.

      Hello there and thanks for your comment much appreciated. That handle manipulation you speak of still exists. In 2.1 I just tested it out. You have to be on the node tool then hold control, click and drag. I am on a mac so if you are using windows I'm not sure of the correct button for that

    You are a great tutor and thanks for patiently putting this together with such finesse and agree with all the comments below. I was looking at the mine of information on your website and it is fabulous. One major issue that is of benefit to the beginner i.e ME IS THAT you dont keep switching between MAC and Window commands and keep to Mac albeit you have put a useful table of alternative window commands up so that makes a huge difference as believe me I have some lessons where that happens all the time and it creates a fog and note the same comment was made below by SW where your style is nice and clear. I have wasted so much time replaying videos where the tutor/demonstrator even makes a mistake by having to correct ie starts of with Mac and constantly gives tries to give both windows and command and then inadvertently flips them themselves which means wondering why it is not working only to find it is not the "student" fault but this issue.

    • @ArtistWright
      @ArtistWright  2 года назад

      Thank you Nigel, I totally hear you in regards to the mac / pc shortcut keys. I only use a mac so don't want to confuse things further by reeling out a bunch of shortcuts for both whilst designing. Like you say I have included some windows relevant shortcuts in the description so I'm glad you found that. Happy designing and have a happy new year Nigel

    As a new user, I ran into an interesting issue around linked and embedded. Unknowingly, I double-clicked on a base PDF and began sorting the jumble of curves into base map features like North arrow, scale, etc., not realizing these layers were only captured in the embedded file, so I could not retain their position and scale when I tried to move them into other layers in the design map. A tutorial on how to navigate layers and copy and paste around embedded and linked files would be a helpful topic. The support material is basic, and your strategic approach would be tremendous. Thank you!!

    • @ArtistWright
      @ArtistWright  4 месяца назад

      Ah yes I understand the situation ( I went through a similar situation in the past) I will note down your request for a future video. This video might be somewhat helpful as I do embed a multi page pdf into my affinity file and change colours etc. ( on the phone mockup).

      Note: when you edit an embedded pdf in an affinity file it won't update the original pdf. But if you make that embedded pdf 'Linked' (through resource manager) it will update the original pdf when you press update. You can also get affinity to automatically update the linked pdf in resource manager by selecting auto update.

    • @johnlepore1562
      @johnlepore1562 4 месяца назад +1

      @@ArtistWright Thanks! Moving layers from embedded PDFs into my base map and maintaining scale did not work. I'm pretty naive about embedded layers and was in awe when they suddenly appeared. It's a good thing I'm experimenting before beginning my project. It's a great app, and I can't say enough about how well you present it!

    • @ArtistWright
      @ArtistWright  4 месяца назад

      most of the time i just open the pdf separately from my affinity designer project and do the old copy and paste. resizing as needed. So is your main issue that you want to retain the same scale of whatever you are copying when it goes into the affinity Designer?

    • @johnlepore1562
      @johnlepore1562 4 месяца назад

      @@ArtistWright@ArtistWright Yes, the original base maps are created in QGIS, with an orthographic background, scale, N arrow, property boundary, hydrologic features, etc., and then exported as PDFs. These are bought into AD, where I group and name the features so I can drag them into the design and modify them. The orthographic photo is clipped, too. Maintaining scale is critical for adding buildings, walkways, etc. Ultimately, I need to develop a repeatable process since I'll be doing multiple designs, which can be very time-consuming. I guess I like protocols too much!

    Brilliant video. I enjoyed it throughout. I have a question you may have answered in the video but I couldn’t find it. On some occasions I’ve had a stuck node where I can’t access the handles. How can I get those handles revealed? I’m on a PC. TIA.

      Glad you enjoyed it! I usually hold shift and CMD and drag the curve in a way it won't mess with the design too much

    nice, it's similar to illustrator's pen tool even the shortcut keys.. maybe I will try using it as an alternative to AI, I tried coreldraw but the pen tool it's slightly differrent than illustrator.

      Thanks, yes Affinity is getting so good now, I think it's the only real challenger to illustrator. Definitely worth trying out.

    Great tutorial. Though, shapes are always closed paths, and curves are open paths with more than 2 nodes. So more than 1 line, which btw can be straight lines, and still be defined as a curve as it's an open path. At least that's how I recall the manual.
