Hazardous Waste Drum Site Cleanup USEPA 1998

This film from the US Environmental Protection Agency shows the assessment and cleanup of an abandoned warehouse containing 5,000 drums of hazardous waste in Matthews, North Carolina in 1998. The drums contained mixed chemicals, including ethylene glycol, peroxides, acids and flammable liquids and solids. The film shows the many hazards faced by cleanup workers and some methods for controlling those hazards. It is scary to think what kind of stuff these types of factories have laying around. There was a trucking company here in Australia that had a yard that backed onto a major motorway. There was also a walk way running along side it that linked a bus stop to the road on th other side of the trucking company yard. One day I had to catch a bus to this particular bus stop to pick up a part for my car and as I walked past the back of the trucking company yard I noticed two pallets of 44 gallon steel drums stacked on top of each other. Twp of the bottom drums I noticed were leaking slot a whitish grew. Substance and I could smell this very acrid smell I've never smelt before. Not like acid bit differently. I called the fire brigade and they eventually came out and actually blocked off the four lane motorway and cleared the factory as they removed the chemicals. Hardly anything was said about it on the news and it wasn't long after the company moved. Where the drums sat I could clearly see dents in the concrete of about half an inch deep. If it wasn't acid what the heck was it🤔
