The explosion of the internet over the past 20 years has led to the development of one of the newest creative mediums: the website. Web designers have adapted through the technological developments of html, CSS, Flash, and JavaScript, and have mastered the balance between creativity and usability. Now with the advance of mobile, the greatest websites have taken user experience and responsive design to the next level, and continue our evolution from print to a digital world.

I'm the head of design for Europe in a large corporation. I've been building sites from the birth of the wobbldy WOrld wide web. I'd say that there was a peak of design innovation. It went backwards from there. User interaction at the front end was being lectured in the early 90's, I developed some of the worlds first content management systems. Most off shelf templates are adequate now, and cheap, and easily editable. Information and supply of relevant information is key. Design is just slap.
All of PBS Off Book productions are very inspirational. There is no episode I wouldnt learnt something new
I am a web designer & this video hit the mark! Kudos to everyone that made this! Wow!
We're RWD in my class right now, and this is really some great inspiration.
The OffBook-series are fantastic, I would very much like to see some more.
Keep up the great work! :)
I really like the idea that if the user experience is good, the user interface fades into the background.
This is a Great intro video into web design. So easy to understand and so informative. I have been doing web design and HTML and Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) for what seems like for ever now.
Some great points between design and the user experience from then and now.
This is a good primer on the various mediums of creative web design and development with tablets, desktop and smartphone. Amazing what you can find out in 7 minutes about your own website's potential. Compare it against the thought that went into your own marketing and development.
I would say that all people really need to get into presenting their online business on the world wide web. I also assume that ranking in the major serps might be a great starting position. Excellent video!
Consistently some of if not the best videos on youtube.
Hey great video. I have been struggling to find early web designers. Do you know where can i find information about that? Thank you.
I love how they showed WIX!
Thank you for this production PBS. The Visual Design Fundamentals section with Jason Santa Maria was very valuable. The fact that web design should be thought of very differently than print design is a very valuable point. I experience the same issues as a video professional, trying to explain to clients that the font they are so fond of for use in their email or word documents, usually does not translate well on screen. Your point about additive color is very valid too. Thank you for this.
Sorry to be so off topic but does someone know of a tool to get back into an Instagram account??
I stupidly lost the login password. I would appreciate any tips you can offer me
@Donovan Atticus instablaster =)
@Bobby Elian I really appreciate your reply. I found the site thru google and Im trying it out now.
I see it takes a while so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
@Bobby Elian It worked and I finally got access to my account again. I'm so happy!
Thank you so much you saved my account !
@Donovan Atticus no problem =)
2:00 my favorite band ever ^_^
Great video... also was that Patrick Norton at 5:30 :-D
When you’re watching a video on the toilet and then the video mentions that some people are on the toilet 😮💩
One of the best ones yet!
For me the looks of the website is the very first impression to the visitors. Of course content is still king when it comes to the ranking on search engine and leads generation.
Love these! Keep 'em coming.
Great Video for all people with a website
i like the video to go back n watch it when i start building my website ty :)
Good video content, 7.03 minutes well used.
PBS is freakin AWESOME! :D
I love OffBook!!!!!
Hey this video has shots taken at Gardner-Webb University -I'd love to know how PBS obtained permission to use those shots?
Great video, very true indeed, should help a lot of those new to the industry :)
If your website isn't appealing, then people are going to leave. Simplicity is key. But don't be too simple. There is a balance.
appearance != ease-of-use
Great video.
Good explanation. Thank you.
You're generalizing the category- maybe there's no money in the web designer from the 90's you remember, but there very much is in UI, UX, front-end develoment, back-end development, and all the futher nuances in between. I manage four, I have seven contractors, all well paid, all bleeding edge in their careers from mobile to the rest.
I liked your video.I am new to this business. How long have you been in the industry?
New OffBook YES!
It still requires intelligence, effort, and experience to create an engaging and enjoyable UI and UX. I don't know how far back you're talking about, but the ability for the average random user to create a website has been around for over a decade (see Angelfire, Geocities, etc). The set of protocols that form the basis of the Internet were created to help people connect and share information. Sure we share a lot of drivel, but the Internet has always been full of that.
Hey..
Cool video and great information fr the website development..
thanx for share this..
Cool!
Great!
@DanasDesigns1969 You've got your color systems mixed up. RGB is additive and CMYK is subtractive.
This was a really Great video! However ~ I would like to note the one guy saying web design uses Additive Color ~ that is wrong. CMYK is Additive Color. All screen displays use rgb which is Subtractive Color actually. RGB is based on the light spectrum, obviously.
Very useful Website Design Videos

If I could subscribe more than one time I would!
This Channel is awesome :D
In the not so dustant future Web pages look somewhat different...
Se você curte ou trabalha com web, precisa ver esse vídeo...
I know content is king but it seems to me a lot of designers are putting aesthetics on the back burner these days. Id like to see more artistic and creative designs on the web. Dont get me wrong they are out there but too far in between in my opinion.
interesting stuff thanks for the video

Coolio.
i dont know how i got unsubbed :/ at least i realized i didnt have a new episode in my sub box for a while!
you happen to have my name. How's that like?
music in the background as a serious obstacle, I know English is not so good
There is no money in web design. You can automatically produce any sort of site for loose change. So if you meet a web designer these days they will be mostly unemployed and sitting around in a coffee shop wondering what happens next.
DId Google watch this video? Probably not.
Angry German Kid! OUO
Anyone can make a website, sure. But just because you have the tools to make something doesn't mean you have the skills to make it good.
Lm
So the internet should just stay as it was 20 years ago? You did a very good job developing the foundations of what we use but to just leave it would be a waste. That's how technology works. With that logic the Nokia 3310 was a good phone, we'll use that forever. We'll all work with IBM machines and Apple II's because they worked.
"The bar is so low, anyone can make a website" -_- the reason why us developers are out of a job...
ok so i play bo2 and im in FaZe. do you think u could help are clan out by disigning a youtube channle style and website disign B) fail spalling srry
As a website design contest winner, every thing they explained is basic, nothing in depth. A key item is to make the users work for you.
*ahem* facebook.
It comes down to about the money, not the website. For all you know, the secrets lay in the code. There are many things you dont know about.
Like what is in the food you eat... Lol
This world is all about simplicity and money.
you developers have no emotion, first of all we are talking about a product made for the people, we human beings are visually oriented, we have eyes to gather visual information like shapes, lines, we are surrounded by graphics, it makes us understand better and better express ourselves.
webdesign is not only about graphics or code, we also care about our clients needs and work together to achieve website/service success.
Craigslist has a good user interface? Are you fucking kidding?
Not true. I do make my living with web design. Yes, you can make any sort of site for loose change - if you have the time, if you want a generic site that looks like everyone else's, if you don't mind risking being overlooked by search engines because of some mistake you made on your site that you didn't even know was a mistake.
where there kangaroos at Noah's `ark? that's the question
I am your father and you disappointed me and your mom. She's crying.com
This is a really shallow piece of information thogh.
so far the designs here are uninspiring
