The Boss Katana - it has been the best selling amp for many years - looking on Reddit I found something about "Sneaky Amps" the other day...And well...It has unlocked a whole ton of stuff that I never knew was in the Katana!

Here's another tip: flip the Stereo Expand switch, plug a cable in from Line Out to an interface, and use your own IRs. The Stereo Expand bypasses the internal cab sim.
I’m gonna have to try that
Where can I find that Stereo Expand Switch? Is that applicable to a katana 50 mk1?
@@CharLessMajor7Music only on the MkII, 100 and up.
This is a nice tip but even the Mic Sim of the katana are really great
Is there a way to disable the internal cab sim without plugging anything in?
Right angle plugs in strats is uncivilized.
I noticed that too 😂 I could give him a soft pass if it was routed through the strap and he was standing but, this just feels like chaos!
Lol thx for pointing that out
😂
I can't unsee that now
…yeah, but when you play like John, who cares!
I've played hundreds of gigs using a V1 Katana and it never lets me down. It is now a great backup amp for me
I connected it via usb successfully once. Now it fails me every time.
Why on Earth would BOSS lock all this stuff to begin with?? This is kind of a huge bonus for anyone who's already got a Katana, or for those of us considering getting one.
To offer it later as a 99$ update.
Those sneaky amps and effects are not permanent. With each update a few get deleted to make room for more officially supported effects and features. I do miss a few of the effects that are not longer available but the capabilities the MKii added were worth it imo.
I play strictly out of the box with plugins now (homeplayer) - I love the absence of outboard gear laying around.
I have to admit, your Katana videos are tickling some of those old G.A.S. impulses. Well done, sir.
Have you tried any other digital amps like the Fender GTX or Catalyst? If so, is there a marked difference in quality"
@@johnmccarthy9445 No I haven't. I'm quite happy with my Neural plugins. Haven't considered new outboard gear for some time. That Catalyst looks interesting though.
@@johnmccarthy9445 I have the Fender GTX100, it's a pretty good amp, but most of the amp simulations are borderline unusable, and you really have to mess with the amp for a while to make it sound good. It's also notable that the distortion is less than optimal on this amp, so a distortion pedal goes a long way and improves the GTX100 by leaps and bounds. Lastly, it should also probably be mentioned that the direct output of the GTX100 doesn't sound good. There's things you can do to make it sound better, but it clips a lot and sounds very digital and completely different from how the amp sounds through the speaker. So if you plan on recording with the direct output, I would get the Boss Katana. If you want an amp that sounds great loud and has those sparkly Fender cleans, the Fender GTX100 could be the way to go. Hope this helps
Thank you for this John, I had moved away from my Katanas back to my valve BlackStar.. but will revisit these options. Thanks for your work and awesome playing.
Really appreciate your vids, reviews and playing. LOVE my Katana Air. Keep up the good work. And, just want to say as well, really appreciate your completely unpretentious style. Never feels like your talking down to your audience, quite the opposite. Thanks for the breath of fresh air in this space...
Saw a band last night 2 100watt katanas set at 50 Watts single coil and humbucker guitars and they killed it great sound
Katana Librarian is the my usual way of accessing all the GT100 features. Using it with a Xsonic Airstep Kat Edition is perfect for me.
The sneaky MS 1959 cleans up really nice as well
It is a true pleasure to hear you play.
Started watching your videos for the gear, subscribed for the playing. Absolutely monstrous stuff there, chops for days! Would be great to have some lessons on increasing fretting hand speed. Cheers!
This is a prime example that you can make anything sound good if you’re a good player with a good ear.
True but reality is if you cant make one of these sound good you can't make anything else sound good either.
@@marcavus1 I have one and it’s ok at best. Clean is pretty good but the more drive you add the more synthetic it sounds.
@@JimWelniak I have two fav transister amps: Fender Stage 100 ( I paid 130€s, mint condition) and believe it or not : Harley Benton Mosfet Lead 65W: Jazzy warm goody tone, and loud for drummer at 3! even the amp drive channel crunched sounds good! must be the Mosfets...and the good English Celestion G12T-100 speaker! someone else also said hes using this Harley as a Jazz amp! mind you its the older model, the newer ones dont say Mosfet Lead and have crappier speakers...( paid 80€, mint)😎😎
Yes a competent player is important however, the Katana is a good amp. I spent most of my working life in a couple of different road bands playing a Fender twin Reverb, Marshall DSL40 and Vox AC30. The Vox was my favorite but completely unreliable. My Katana 100 is easily the equal of that Vox. I never knew that a solid state amp could be so good! I'm too old to be on the road now but I still do local gigs and the Katana is my "go to".
@@marcavus1 yes, and if you can make it sound great, you make better gear sound even greater.
Great video! I own a combo and head of the Katana 100. I was not aware it really had all this available.
I don’t regret selling my tube amps at all. I get great tones out of these. I’d like the Artist version. Even a 2x12 combo would be great.
Have version 1 artist, great sounding amp and powerful beyond any solid state amp100 WAtts or more, nice lows end, mids and high end.. it sounds huge, likely the speaker and bigger cab, but definitely voiced a little different than the 100 and 50 Kat.. I have a 50 kat mk in that I put a celestion A type in it and be it became a seriously arse kicking amp after speaker swap. Stock speaker good but lacked a bit of low end, not anymore.. the celestion A type really hits All the sweet spots of tonality in kat 50 and is loud.
Ignore that it's 8 ohm's as it's definitely louder than stock and way Fuller tone.. I'm thinking about grabbing a 100 Watt 112 Kat? But waiting to see what comes in new etc
Excellent demonstration of the extra hidden furnitures of the katana! Thanks! Cheers!
Boss are aware of this capability and have even taken out a couple of amps with an update. Notably the orange amps. I assume for legal reasons as they were just called orange, what else can you really call an orange amp? But the others are all in tact. I use a dual rec and jcm 800 as 3 of my 4 presets and a 5150 thats on the actual knob on the amp. All with custom pedal order for compression, pitch shift, and a 3rd effect on front of drive pedals and the eq after drives before the preamp and then the second bank of effects after pre-amp and then verb and delay. Really turned the humble katana into a mighty djent machine, chug generator, and smooth leads. Not bad for a sub 300$ combo amp, a printer usb cable, and free (3rd party) software.
Line 6 called the Orange a Citrus 🤪👍
Isn't it about time you put some of this together and released an Album....JS
Love your playing John, nice video 👍.
Just a word about the SNEAKY AMPS - they're basically the amp sims that BOSS used in their older COSM engine for previous generations of products ... GT series multi-FX, BR series digital recorders, etc.
The .tsl files are available for download (Google is your friend). There are ~30 individual amp sims, contained in two .tsl files ('cos of the max limit of 16 patches per .tsl file). As of today (Aug '24), 26 of them work on my Mk2 Artist running system SW version 2.0 and BTS 2.1.0.
I have the impression that BOSS are none too happy about them being out there - why would they not want them to be available ? The only reason I can maybe think of is that they don't want the Katanas tagged as modelling amps, like their competitors are.
AFAIK (not confirmed), the SNEAKY AMPS *_do not_* work on Gen3 Katanas, only Mk1 and Mk2.
I think the BOSS Katana 100 with the Matchless sneaky amp, is a WEAPON in the right hands.
Touch responsive loves the volume and tone knobs, and loves outboard pedals, OR the green OD.
Add a 30-34% green reverb, Presence to taste and Master as high as she'll go - you're off to the races!!!
I did a couple of comparison videos between the Katana and Two Rock - using phone cameras for the time, not great, but not as terrible as I thought it would be.
I've still got the Two Rock (needs tubes...go figure LOL) so I should try and do a great comparison with some old standards (e609, SM57, i5, etc)
I think the Katana is something EVERY guitarist should have, bar none!!!!!!
Greetings from Glasgow. You play spectacularly well, laddie. Just lovely. I'm a 56 yr veteran of the guitar. I've just recently got rid of all me tube amps, frankly due to the weight of them. Just purchased a Fender GTX 100, for all it's effects. Was interested in the Katana but went for the GTX. Now I'm more than a bit confused. I'm a Fender lad but recognize the a/b amp superiority of the Boss over the class d of the Mustang. I'm a new subscriber by the way. 🍀🎸🍀
Class AB vs class D in the power section is not what you're hearing. That's a marketing gimmick by Roland. There are hi-fi amps now that are class D.
Those pentatonic runs 😮
Commenting to extend your life!
And I normally use RUclips speed setting to play videos faster but just realised running it slow is great to see your fingers! Nice playing!!!
Hey John. Great video. Unless I missed it, have you plugged one of your modelers into the Katana? If so, and you had to choose based solely on sound quality, would you choose a Henriksen Bud, Catalyst or a Katana. I asked this question a few minutes ago on the Buy Me a Coffee page. Sorry for the repeat question. BTW, I have a Fender GTX 100 which I am not in love with for use with my modelers. It has an effects loop as opposed to a "power line in" jack which both the Catalyst and Bud have. Sorry that this question is not on point per the video subject. Thanks!!
man this intro IV-Vish jam is killer
That K Line guitar is really good looking! And you play it like a master!
I don't own a Boss Katana, but I sound like a salesman to my friends who Ithink need one
Another fantastic video with Fantastic playing. I would love to see you do some more amp sim reviews and experiments in the box. Nembrini just released the ADA MP-1 pre amp and is available at 29$ US. I’m really interested. Thanx John.
Lovely sounds JNC! Thanks for sharing.
Wow! Beautiful playing 👌
Thanks for the tips. While I'm very happy with my Kat Artist I sometimes experience seller's remorse with having sold off all my tube amps. Its good so see an accomplished player like yourself liking the Kat - I mean if it didn't sound good I doubt it'd make someone like you smile. On a separate note, the biggest "issue" I have with the Kat is getting lost in it's too many options and features - and you're not helping :) I found what I do like about all the options and Tone Studio is experimenting with the options then settling on a few stock sounds that "get the job done", then leaving all the features and options behind and focus on playing well with the few presets I have. BTW the gafc footswitch is great for live playing. Finally, the one feature I've not yet got a good grip on is the Contour knob. It would be cool if this is something you'd cover if you have it figured out. I've yet to see a good video on it.
Holy f*** you absolutely shredded that man!
John you’re really a superb player
I hope you can compare this with the catalyst.
I used a similar editor years ago with a gt8. I think it was called gt floorboard.
Nice melodic phrasing..👍👍
I have never let go of mine since I bought the boss katana it just sounds so good
Sounds great reminds me of Joe Satriani from the Crystal Planet album!
Good find on the Katana, thanks.
You have a looper added to the effects loop? What are the signal paths? How did you add the drums? Or are you recording to a DAW, Garageband, etc/?
Great video! Would love to see you do a video on the Positive Grid Spark 40!
I’d be curious about an updated shootout between the Katana (especially Artist) and Catalyst, if you have both
I tried the katana mk1 mk2 and the catalyst, the catalyst wasn't on par with the mk1 right out of the box, it sounded okay but muffled.
Speaking of the katana's in my mk1 i had to do a complete reset in order to fix the sound and the improvement is huge, when I tried the mk2 I didn't do the reset because i forgot about it but the sound was decent, I didn't like as much as I liked my mk1
I'm still here, hoping for Headrush content again...
@johnnathancordy Ok, but would you chose the Katana over the line 6 Catalyst. Why or why not?
The sneaky amps probably come from Boss GT pedals, Problem you have is if you change panel and go back to original panel (patch) it will default back to katana amp , So this wont work live, Unless you turn your amp on and off to reset the sneaky pack, Also those packs blew my amp up possibly, It caused a software glitch my amp refused to turn on I had to get boss to kindly replace it
The sneaky amos broke yourk katana?
GT100
@Sometimesdim Neverthin they're in the COSM software engine that BOSS brought out 20+ years ago. I have them in both my GT-10 and BR1600CD recording desk too.
Sneaky Amps access something that is there anyway. No chance of blowing anything. I also save to panel buttons fine in the usual way by just holding them down.
I find the Boss Katana to be a very good amplifier. I have a Katana Mark II 50. I also tried it with the Helix LT in the power amp in and it sounds good in my opinion. John what do you think about the Helix in the power amp in, used as a monitor? Would you please give me your opinion? Thank you
Are these presets in your preset pack linked in the description that’s on your website?
Sneaky amps are great but you can't permanently save them to a location, so it's a little tricky. If you forget and change an amp on the fly, the sneaky amp is gone and it's back to the software....
The Sneaky amp model comes back when you return to the channel it was saved under (if you turned the Amp selector, amp will change to that selected amp, change to another channel, and then back to that first channel and the sneaky amp model will be there again)
If John gets a 40 watt Signature Amp, we know what it's name going to be! #jnc40
ha haa!
I really enjoy your videos, tks for sharing
Great video! Every guitarist needs a Katana even if they don't know it.
I feel the same way and would say the same about a multi-fx. Just another very useful tool people overlook for adding in a variety of sounds, practicing ease, and recording.
another reason katana tones sound good on videos is because mostly all the guitarists are using the katana 100 and above models( 100mk2 dual speaker, katana artist, katana head and cabinet) and those amps have good speakers in them . i doubt the tones would sound that good on the 50W model which has the cheapest speaker . this guy is using a katana artist which has a boss WAZA speaker ( super expensive stuff) . all im trying to say is that there is no tone quality consistency across the lineup as each katana with the higher price tag sounds better than the cheaper one for example 100w is going to sound better than the 50w katana and then the artist is going to sound better than the 100w katana and etc . sorry for the typos cuz autocorrect sucks
You can replace the speaker of course, but this is another plus of the Catalyst cx. The 60w only compromise is lack of a proper midi connection on the back.
Anyone considering a katana should be aware that yes the 50 sounds good but the speaker in the 100 is superior.
I bought a first gen 50 katana for cheap second hand as well as a katana 100 speaker. The 100 speaker in the katana 50 brings it to life. Then add sneaky amps to it and with the "twin" sneaky amp it comes to life. I can go from fender cleana to a marshall style brown sound with the press of a foot switch and all for around 200 CAD second hand. If there is a more versatile amp for less i would be shocked.
The only thing it is slightly lacking is the depth of a true spring reverb but its still very good.
If this was your only amp it can get you by no problem. I would definately suggest the 100 if you have the funds just for the speaker though.
Fascinating....and I don't even own a Katana. Makes me wonder what else is hidden in hardware out there.....
I always enjoy your videos
Are these the Sneaky Amp patches you are playing available in the preset patch pack for sale on your web site??
all the boss katana videos have super amazing classic tones but there is not a single video on youtube and there is not a single patch online on getting modern tones specifically math rock like Polyphia and Chon . i wish people made videos on achieving those tones on the katana .
So these are Amp Sims that are being accessed off the onboard dsp chip?
Makes me think the katana was initially not analogue and instead going to just be a modeling amp; then they switched to dsp only doing the effects for the unit..
My only other question is are these compatible with the expanded foot-switch they sell?
All the Katana amp models are DSP, nothing analog in the amp models.
@@colinwillcocks6004 right, that is what I wanted to make sure I wasn’t confused on thanks for confirming. Any idea I’d the programmable footswitch could access any of this stuff?
Oops you answered my question already. Miced mk3. Nice sounds.
I have a katana and its great... but bro... have u tried the quilter superblock us or uk?
great lead
Good playing so so very nice!!!
Does that sound come from USB or from a microphone in front of the amp?
That the problem I have. My Kat Artist sounds great through my earphones but as soon as I disconnect and play thru the speaker, it's a mess.
It is not the Katana that sounds so good... actually mine doesn't, if you konw what I mean :D
You need a pedalboard...🤫
@@michelvondenhoff9673 The point I wanted to make was more: I need to be able to play like John to make my Katana sound so good ;)
@@HerrPapa try an EQ pedal. maybe 2-in-1 with comp it will tidy up your tone. and some boutique picks
Love how your compliment has flown over the heads of so many...
Are you mixing a cab? Which one? 65gt?Any direct here? Better sounds than last artist vid.
What is that style you’re playing called? It’s very melodic
I'm still a headphone player through my Ampero 2 but I've been mulling over getting some kind of speaker/cab solution for a while. Is it worth getting a Katana-100 MkII combo second hand? I've seen people raving about it for ages but I've never got round to trying one. Anyone got any thoughts on the speaker in the 1x12 combo? As long as it isn't excessively muddy then I might give it a go.
hows this VS the catalyst?
Do you have a video where you give a taste of how to learn/practice these scales you use in the video? Cheers
Hey, let's check his first video of his chanel, there are some videos about chords, scales, penta, licks, etc.
I bought one of these amps to play steel through at various gigs. I'm confused in that do I have to have a laptop connected to it at the gig to do all these things? Thanks
Katana does sound great, Vox VT40x is also a nice all-in-one amp.
I just sold my VT40X. With the guitar volume up full; it sounded great. BUT, when backing off the volume to clean it up; it choked the notes out. Was terrible. My Katana cleans up reasonably well.
I sold my VOX VT40x very quickly. It’s ok. Katana kinda wastes it with its features.
@@CMHobbies Sold mine few weeks ago, got a Marshall DSL-1 but wouldn't mind a Katana. Run it through DBX 166 comp/gate/limiter sounds hifi if you want it to.
I have the VT40x and I find it limited with only 3 effects in the chain at a time. For example you can’t have a comp in front of a chorus and so on.
Does smart amps work with the gen 3 artist amp
Are these sneaky amps available for the katana artist mk2 aswell?
To my ears, these sounds all need a bit more presence, 10k-16k. I usually like dark sounds but these just sound a bit muffled. The rest of the frequencies are great. Maybe in a mix they’d be fine.
great video
All those great photos of guitarists pointing at the crowd are just sleeve issues. Especially Hendrix with those pirate shirts.
If Rick Graham and Andy James had a kid
Hello - Cannot open file type that i downloaded? Thanks, Michael
Is there something wrong with your Gumroad? Trying to purchase the Katana mkII set and keep getting "We couldn't charge your card. Try again or use a different card"
Is that the artis head or regular head? MKI or MKII?
did you already make a video on catalyst vs katana or did I have a fever dream?
Can you access these tones with the Katana Mk 1?
I used sneaky amps with version 1 a couple of years ago.
How could you get this at 2:06 sustain from a strat?
How about a link to that editor?
Is this compatible with the Boss Katana 50 MKI ?
Yes
Will this work with the MK1 Katanas?
I have played over 40 years, a few thousand live performances, owned several dozens of amps, 90 percent tube, and I also own several solid-state amps, including a katana. in studio situations or playing by yourself they are fine, but live, with other instrumentation, when you go to a single note line or solo, they disappear. something about a tube amp that doesn't do that, and never played a solid state that didn't.
While I can respect you opinion, most of the monster players on Music Row in Nashville actually play these every night live in the clubs because they sound good live and are cheap, replaceable, consistent, and light. Katana's are BY FAR, the most common amp you see in those clubs in 2023. The idea they "disappear" in a live setting is just silly.
They may not give the fidelity of a Dumble or Princeton when recorded in studio settings or an AxeFx/Kemper played direct to a PA , but they are ridiculously good enough in a club as a mic'd combo or head/cab setup.
@@droliver while I respect your opinion, those guys haven't played as much as I have anyways, and if you ask any of the seasoned ones, or look, they are playing fender amps, and stuff like that, mostly 6l6 tubes,... anyone knows , and I own one as well, a katana isn't even in the same ball park as a pair of 6L6 tubes and 12ax7s,.. seriously, lmao the Katana is a toy, with built in effects that are kinda just ok, but there is a reason some people can't tell the difference between filet mignon and chuck roast, so nothing to debate here... Afterall, why do you think a good tube amp cost say 1500 and a katana cost 400, do you think it is all just hype? I play loud live leads w a band all the time, do you? I own this amp and many others. do you? i won't try to educate you on the best football cleats, from watching what i see on tv today, and you don't educate me from what you have seen in Nashville, lol
@@gibs8412 Go to the clubs then. Katana has replaced Fender Deluxes as the default backline amps in these settings. They're not identical or as good in the abstract, but they (and some other inexpensive solid state amps) just work well in a club to the point that they're now ubiquitous on the Nashville scene amongst the best players in the world. It may not be what they'd play at home or in a perfect world, but the convenience in setup and good quality audio has won out for this purpose in the same way silent stages with in-ears are winning out for touring acts
Just sayin... B.B. King used Solid State.
@@droliver don't get me wrong, i have tried to love them, have bought many. with the hope they could do what my tubes amps do , but they don't, they are a different tool is all. a tube amp compresses for example in a way the s.s can't. so, it doesn't even play the same, i play old school with my volume a lot too, so, it depends on what and how you play, but my point is katana won't ever do what a tube amp does. while some artists nowdays , mostly younger, can use them , there are also monster guitar players who never can switch, or compromise their playing sound and experience they get using the equipment they love, verses settling for something because it is lighter, cheaper, easier to send a line to foh, or any reason, when I play live I want the best sound possible, I don't want to just get by or do what is easiest, it isn't fair to people paying to hear you to be cheap.they want to hear something amazing too.
damn your an excellent player
So you’re saying that you can’t get these tones without a 3rd party app ? Why aren’t boss doing this????
Well the sneaky amps aren't really part of the Katana, more just a remnant of the GT COSM stuff that the Katana was developed from
how many times does this dude turn around to look behind him at the Katana...
I got rid of my katana too much work to make it sound like a valve amp.
John, you have the boss katana artist not the standard ! It's not the same price and it doesn't sound the same...so far
Sound is very good, but construction is less than average. If you want this amp be prepared to repair it soon.
I use the H&K ones
Katana vs plugins for a home guy?
Can I get these settings from you?
I have the boss gx100, does using the modified editor have more amps available over using the boss tone studio? Or is this more specifically for the katana?
Is this possible on a Boss Katana MK1 50 watt model?
I think so!
does anyone know if the presets also work on a katana mark 1? :)
As far as I know, it does.
Yes 😉
I am not a superstar with computers.
I was wondering if programming the Katana requires a certain computer.
Anyone?
does it work for the mark 1?
Should do!
