- Anthony tells Ivana he thinks she is sending Macy letters and he spoke to a psychiatrist about her problem. Ivana protests that she is innocent. James tells Lauren that he thinks she holds the key to unraveling Sheila's mysteries. The police suggest Anthony or Ivana might be sending Macy hate mail but Thorne and Macy don't believe it. Lauren tells James she is unsure about revealing Sheila's past.

I compared Brooke to Kellyanne Conway and @Esi compared Eric and Stephanie to Bill and Hillary, and I just realized (in keeping with the political theme) that James could be Mitt Romney, seemingly dignified but pretty much useless. 😂😂

The Sheila and Lauren storyline taking a hiatus in 1994 is what dragged that year of the show down IMO. 1992 and 1993 were the greatest years in B&B's history and early 1994 was solid too. From June 1994 through the end of the year was the most dull period of the show up until this point. These first three months of 1995 episodes are already a big improvement.
*Lauren as the Obstacle to Exposing Sheila*
Lauren's reason for hesitating to expose Sheila (not wanting to destroy Eric's "happy" life) is just as hazy and unconvincing as Taylor's reason for staying away (not wanting to destroy Ridge's happy life). It just doesn't fit with what Lauren actually knows about Sheila: it's not like Lauren simply knows some unsavory stuff about Sheila, she knows that Sheila is a dangerous and wanted criminal whole kidnapped Lauren's baby and tried to kill Lauren!
It's yet another example of the difference between the two writing regimes. Bill Bell knew that the animosity and sordid history between these two women required Sheila to have real leverage over Lauren, for Sheila to have to blackmail Lauren for her silence (and _even then_ Lauren was constantly debating taking that hit and exposing Sheila anyway). But here, under Brad Bell, the impediment to Sheila's exposure is _Lauren herself_ refusing to just spill the beans for no good reason.
As I said in another post, Lauren describing herself as "the missing piece in the puzzle" (7:28) recalls the blackmail puzzle Sheila once sent to her. The implication here is that Sheila doesn't have leverage anymore but Lauren herself has become the puzzle, the obstacle in James' quest to expose Sheila, and that's a much less interesting plot. It shifts the urgency from Sheila vs Lauren to Sheila vs James and we will see that as Lauren becomes diminished and sidelined in the denouement of Sheila's storyline. It's very much like Taylor herself being the obstacle to a Tridge reunion. Just as Taylor should be wanting to get back to Ridge, Lauren should be wanting to expose Sheila.
Ah Nick. So young and yet so wise. 😁 I saw Susan Flannery at the end of this episode and decided to watch and I'm glad I stuck around for another set of your brilliant analyses.

I wrote in another comment that it isn't like Sheila is a litter bug.. She's a literal maniac, who would be immediately arrested should the police know she's alive. How in the world could Lauren willfully decide that Eric may not need to know this, just bc he seems happy? He's happily married to a homicidal ghost. This goes beyond a promise, made to Scott on his, death bed or whatever. Any friend would want their friend to know this info.
And I too thought the same re: Lauren keeping Sheila's secret about being alive vs Taylor keeping her secret about herself being alive. The longer it goes on, the more we have to question their motivation for doing so.
@@TriniT21 Exactly. If Lauren's story about Sheila was just, "She tricked my husband and destroyed my marriage", you could understand how that would be something you might be afraid to tell a "happy" husband about his wife. But Lauren's story about Sheila includes high crimes, kidnapping and attempted murder (including the kidnapping of a baby!), so whether Eric is happy or not has no bearing. There's no way Lauren would be thinking, "If I tell Eric this it will destroy his life" instead she'd be thinking, "If I don't tell Eric, this woman will destroy his life." Both Lauren and Taylor should be desperately trying to reveal their secrets while being thwarted by _other_ forces.
I agree - which is why I asked in another thread if there's something we're missing, some motivation of Lauren's that is only shown on Y&R, because what we see of Lauren on B&B certainly doesn't explain her behavior.
If Lauren has nothing to lose by exposing Sheila, and nothing to _gain_ by exposing Sheila, and doesn't have enough concern for her old friend Eric to consider this information that he deserves to know, what possible motivation could there be left?
Power? Is Lauren the kind of person who wants to hold on to people's dark secrets in order to use them as leverage at a later date? Is she the bla ck mail ing type? As a B&B only viewer, I feel that I don't know Lauren well enough at this point to decide whether this is psychologically within Lauren's character.
Is she secretly attracted to Sheila and wants to give her the benefit of the doubt after whatever transpired the night before between Eric, Lauren and Sheila (according to a certain "creative interpretation" of those scenes)?
Is it that she doesn't want James to "cheat" but wants him to figure it out on his own?
Lauren needs to have her lime green suit treated with Belief. It's a wrinkled mess just from driving from Forrester to James office. 😊
Hopefully not the one that they were testing in the lab... That one still needs some work so Lauren doesn't blow up if she gets hot lol

Anthony was a master at manipulations I must say he almost had me convinced ivana was losing it while it was all his doing

Silly soap writing. The dialogue has added a year to the TRIDGE marriage and now to the Sheila-Eric marriage, even when we didn't see that playing out on screen and when the children did not age. And then, at another time, when it doesn't make any sense, the children will be aged up.

"So you're looking to me to be your missing piece in the puzzle," says Lauren (7:28) neatly recalling the blackmail puzzle pieces Sheila once sent to her. Back then Sheila was fully in control of the plot and the puzzle she created was a symbol of that control i.e. her ability to create (like an artist) a piece of visual media that reflected the show itself (Lauren's affair) and prevented Lauren from exposing her, thus allowing Sheila's story to keep going on B&B and delaying the climax. But now Sheila has lost control of the story. She's not as "creative" as she was before and she has no influence over Lauren anymore (as evidenced by her failing to convince Lauren not to come to LA this time).
Excellent commentary as always. I'm just more 'basic' about my observations than you, USUALLY. Sheila is still in control though. I know her outfit here and tomorrow, Sheila will be dunking Lauren's head under water in the jacuzzi. This will immediately prompt Lauren to go running to James, then shortly thereafter, James will find himself in Sheila's houdini prison cell in her basement. OOOOooo, it's about to get good!

I think Sheila has lost control of the plot because none of those moves are the kind of clever manipulation tactics that got her out of jams and made her come out on top like before (like how she outmaneuvered Lauren at the wedding chapel or in Catalina). Sheila kidnapping James is a desperate dead-end move that will lead to her downfall in a few weeks.

However..
I do believe the writers have also lost control of the plot, by having Lauren come all the way to LA to not reveal to her friend Eric what he should know about his maniac wife, and then to almost have to lose her life b4 she "realises" who she was dealing with. When all along, she KNOWS Sheila is the same person (she's been saying it for herself). The reference to the puzzle pieces, should be enough to convince Lauren that her friend Eric is married to a dangerous madwoman. She should tell him and whatever he chooses to do with that info.. Well.. 🤷🏽♀️
The writers also had James lose control of the plot from a long time ago, hence he needs to resort to begging Lauren for info on Sheila, which is not only unethical in his practice, but also just proves how ineffective he is. The writers also lost the plot by not having Steph more actively involved in digging up about Sheila.
Thus the eventual denouement of Sheila was very unsatisfying.
The best part is going to be Sheila herself at her "farewell" party, and we have to wait a while for this....

For instance, if Eric gives Lauren the green-light to spill the beans, why does she only have to reveal Sheila's past to James? Why can't she just tell Eric and Stephanie directly? Why can't she call the police? Why she can't she tell everyone back in Genoa City that Sheila is alive?

@@ajax34 YES. I know the climax of this storyline is a fan favorite with some iconic moments (James in the dungeon., Sheila's goodbye party) but to me, it's flash over substance. It's not as intricately plotted as the best Sheila storylines were (the paternity test, Sheila's wedding, Catalina).
*SPOILER ALERT:*
Lauren going back to Genoa City and not doing anything for weeks is dumb.
Sheila kidnapping James when Lauren can still reveal her secrets is dumb.
Sheila calling everyone together at the house and everyone going along with it is DUMB.
As someone who was riveted by Sheila and her storyline, I find this ending unworthy of her brilliance (despite some fun moments). Not to mention the lame underwhelming way Sheila's past finally gets revealed to Eric and Stephanie - that's probably the part I dislike the most.

I think Burke only deals specifically with homicide and attempted homicide. This crime is not on a level worthy of his attention.

In one part of LA, Sheila worries about Lauren talking to a psychiatrist about her.
In another part of LA, Ivana worries about Anthony talking to a psychiatrist about her.
The purpose of connecting Sheila and Ivana this way, by encouraging the viewers to see parallels between the two characters, must be to make us question Ivana's mental stability, doubt her story, and suspect that she is still writing those letters after all, even if she denies it. It is a subtle red herring where the writers are trying to hide the real culprit in plain sight by aligning him with the truth-teller Lauren.
Oh that's a great connection! And you're right it could work subtly on the viewer that way. I wish they'd gone even further and had Anthony actually meet with James to discuss Ivana. Both Anthony and James are friends of Connor so it wouldn't be a stretch and Anthony would have an in-show reason for doing this (to leave behind "evidence" that he was always suspicious of Ivana).

@@kchellkat1847 Annie and Nick are my favorite posters. I love how they take their literary knowledge and critical-thinking skills and apply it to a genre that's often considered low-brow. They treat a soap opera as if it's worthy of high level analysis.
Thank you @Award Ego and @KC Hell Kat! ❤ I really wish Lit professors would try to connect more with a wider audience by applying their analytical frameworks to mass cultural objects that more people are familiar with. Romantic comedies, Disney films, pop music - these things might not seem like high art but they are still created by artists and still exist in the world and within certain artistic/cultural contexts. And that makes them worthy of analysis.

And Nick, I agree with you that there is good reason to analyze pop culture "seriously". In fact, I think certain tropes and structures are _easier_ to spot in pop culture, in part because they are not as hidden behind layers of complexity and intellectualism as they are in works of a more experimental nature, and in part because something designed to appeal to a broad audience needs to rely on strong themes and archetypes that are part of our "collective unconscious". Soaps need to connect with the viewer on an intuitive level, and that level _is_ the classic structure of drama and archetypal characters. So for that reason the (well written) soap opera is actually an _excellent_ medium to explore classic storytelling tropes.

Love their confrontations too, some of the best on the show. I will always route for Sheila though. Stephanie is/was/has always been so overbearing and controlling. When Sheila came on the scene, she was one of the only people to put Stephanie in her place and never backed down
@@bradgibson15 well you know I am the President of the Non Existent Steph Forrester Fan Club, ( I may be the only member as well, 😂😂😂).
But that's the thing I've loved about Sheila vs Steph. Sheila never backed down. She incorrectly blamed Steph for alot of her problems (caused either by herself or her husband Eric), but I loved how defiant Sheila always was.
And there ever was really a clear "winner" between them.
I think one of my fave stories between them will be in the future when Steph is poisoned. I love how Sheila will visit Steph to admire her "handiwork" 😂

The Belief takeover was the last great B&B storyline. There are other good scenes after that but no storyline on that level. And we all know why (and who).
@@NewYorkNick0607 i think i agree. The next good storyline will be the Thorne/Taylor./Ridge/Brooke quadrangle in my opinion which should have ended the Ridge/Brooke /Taylor once and for all, but Brad Bell went over the board again.
@@greggel I thought the Thorne/Taylor/Ridge/Brooke quadrangle was annoying because it was essentially a regression to the 80s dynamic between Ridge and Thorne. To me, 1996 was better than 1997, with Sheila's return, the paternity reveal, and the mercury storyline.
@@annieo6527 it was a repetition , yes, ,but i think it was logical because Thorne was always the 2nd "dog".... in real life situations , noone accepts that role.Jeff Trachta as an actor couldn't pull off this dynamic i think thus the recast. Of course they destroyed Thorne and Macy for this..and Brad Bell did destroy Thorne character after Brooke went back to her Ridge obsession even though the Thorne/Brooke pairing was succesful. BnB was at its worst after they Deacon/Brooke storyline resolution and Taylor's death , when they had Brooke being the no1 choice for all men on the show (even with Taylor's return)... This was NOT the dynamic of the show...the dynamic of the show was Brooke trying to "conquer" her dreams...not her being the "dream" lol
