- Do birds eat just one type of food, like seeds? Let's find out how bird diets work! Please subscribe to continue learning what makes life AWESOME: BioBush.tv/sub...
We discuss the concepts of herbivore, carnivore, and omnivore, and provide examples of each.
But we also learn the difference between obligate and facultative diets - those birds that MUST eat a certain food versus those that can switch their diet as needed. It turns out almost all birds are facultative, and can eat a variety of different foods!
So if you're in charge of a bird diet, try offering a balance of different types of healthy foods, so the bird can choose what it eats. I hope this helps you learn something new about birds!

Thanks for watching! You're awesome!
Birds are like Americans, once they are on a inferior and unhealthy diet it is hard to get them to change.
It's sad because the change is so worth the effort, in birds or people. Better food = better life. But it is good to hear stories from people who do a good job taking care of birds, like yourself. Thanks for watching, James!
Seeds are also crazy fatty, and aren’t healthy for birds anyways. Just a suggestion, would you consider making a video about your personal experience with birds/ bird keeping/ zookeeping?
Hi Pranav! That's a good point - even birds that do eat seeds as their primary diet don't just get a dish of them every day of the year. Seeds are seasonal and usually protected in some way that takes extra energy to acquire. An odd fatty bird food fact is that Hyacinth Macaws are adapted to a higher-fat diet than most parrots. It would be interesting to look up what makes them tolerant of fat.
I would consider an autobiographical video. The essential beats of the story are that I studied Marine Biology, didn't graduate, volunteered at an aquarium that also had birds, got a job as an avian zookeeper, decided that I needed to learn way more about birds, and then studied them constantly (ramping up over time) for seven years and counting. This might be in the set of videos for next year. Thanks for the idea, and thanks for watching!
Hello again, been a while
Marco! Nice to hear from you again! I recently met someone IRL who was really into that story archive you wrote for. Is your work online? Anyway, it was kind of fun to have that connection, so thank you for teaching me some new things. I am glad you're back, for however long you're back. :)
@@BioBushI was fighting hearing loss, that's why I couldn't watch your videos, but now that my ears are getting better I'm back to stay!
I write with some friends and our WhatsApp group has been quiet for a while (usually not a good sign) so we'll see how that's going.
@@marcopohl4875 Sorry you were experiencing hearing loss, and glad that you are back! Can I do anything to help, like putting captions on videos?
@@BioBush Not needed, I'm getting better, but if you want to, go ahead
