In a season finale, we bring you part 2 of wandering around the general Rotherhithe area, with Exploring Canada Water. We learn about the Surrey Commercial Docks, what happened there, the blubber, the timber, the men who worked them, and why it all came crashing down and it all got filled in. Where did the tube station emerge from? Did the Nazis have any effect on the area? What do you do with an unloved corner of London to turn it into a fairly nice bit to live in?
I feel like this video sort of screws Surrey Quays (or as the locals would still call it, Surrey Docks) out of it's own titled video, but really we've covered the essentials. We just never made it to the main high street bit. I definitely didn't really cover the railway bits well enough, including the bit of railway that disappeared from the docks. I also meant to do Nelson House but it's just a nice house and the video is already extremely long. Could've talked about the farm as well but there are many city farms in London. Maybe the stuff around Lavender Dock also. But you can't talk about it all.
There will be a several month gap as we've had many times before, until I get a chance to make another video. And as I allude to, I may never bother. After almost 5 years of making videos this channel has never really taken off, which is fine, but it's maybe a touch less fun than it used to be, and if it's not fun then what's the point? I've had so many lovely messages and comments from people which has been amazing, but this is definitely a niche pursuit. If I get the time and the inspiration I will be back, and until then thank you for all the support, you lovely internet people.
