In [Follow My Lead] episode #07 I talk about the song “Lullaby” From the 1994 album “Join the Band” by Take 6. Written by Alvin Chea and Ivan Lins. This one is a bit tough for me to discuss because of the complexity of this particular song.

This particular song is my favorite !!
Mannn, C-Mac you have no idea how greatly we appreciate these videos, doc!!! Keep em coming!!!
Amazing!!!! Thanks for sharing. Many people don’t have a full appreciation for the complexities and nuances of layering voices. Awesome to hear first hand!!!
I know how frustrating these things can be! Sometimes the inner resonance feels good but the sound from the outside is not quite the same pitch. This stuff can drive people crazy !!! I would have never imagine you had this kind of experience during this song though! You sounds impeccable !
Also the grow til the big part is sooooo epic wow!
Also interestingly enough it can depend on which ear I’m listening through with my headphones 🙈🙈😂
@@ClaudeMcKnight3 Yes ! 100%
I wore that Join The Band tape out on my Walkman
This was a great lesson on Pitch Center/Gradient!! Thx..
It can't be easy to sell a song like that given the emotionality of the arrangement and the sincerity/innocence of the lyrics. Add in the range and pitch challenges, the strange sonic/hearing stuff that can happen in the studio and in the cans, and having a really skilled guy like Cedric on the other side of the glass... :)
I guess I would just say that each person hears differently, in fact we all hear differently from day to day at times! That day was tough. It took a LOT of air support, and calming of my nerves and spirit to stay focused emotionally and musically. To me there also “feels” like the slight nervousness carried over to “tape”...but I believe that made the final feel ...right
@@ClaudeMcKnight3 Like all the recordings you've discussed so far...this is one of my favorites, too. I swear I'm not just blowing smoke!
@@esanders dude, please stop saying it's your favorite song each time a new video drops! haha
@@jbcraipeau ONE OF my favorites! You know you also have 100 favorite Take 6 songs :)
@@esanders You guys only have 100 favorite Take 6 songs?! Wow that's cruel, I have 101..
Interesting thoughts. It's funny how from my perspective as a listener I never think when I listen to a Take 6 song like "wow they should have picked somebody else for that lead". It all seems to fit in right and it always seems like the right person. In terms of what you had mentioned with pitch gradients, especially in a group setting like this it's probably good that Alvin is either right on the pitch or a little on top. He is the foundation, both for tuning and tempo. Also, I can't imagine Cedric saying "you're flat" to you of all people. Maybe you'll get to it in a later episode also but if anyone is crazy about tuning vocals (from what I've heard) it's Merv lol...
I thought I was the only one that went through this! Thanks for the transparency
Wow thanks for the insight, you are the most honest artist I have come across when ur comes to how songs were made .
Love the segment's name, Claudie Mack. "Follow my lead". I'm definitely following you.... across the world, the Twin Isle Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, West Indies, Caribbean. Shout out to Take 6 and my countryman, Dr Max Ferdinand as well. God bless you all.
This is one of my favorite Take 6 songs and I think Claude killed the lead in spite to the somewhat surprising backstory.
I was lost my sleep hours in 2003-2006 because i was wait for "Lullaby", that was usually translated in the end of program on the "Hermitage"-radio station, Saint-Petersburg, Russia. And i usually think about key it's written. I Prefer flat, more than sharp. In flats world my brain is working faster, then sharps.
You totally nailed it bro. So many rich textures in your delivery for a very beautiful song. Thanks for these real back-stories!
Interesting. I never noticed..I always thought it fit the voice.... I didn't know about a pitch gradient. I just try to stay in tune and keep my folks in tune. Man i'd be so nervous to sing with those cats.. It's not like I ever will, hahaha!! Well I'm about to listen to Lullaby!
I like the behind the scenes insight about Ced producing. It is a nice addition knowing who the producer was for each of these episodes and the dynamics.
Ced said you were flat quite a few times. Stay true, ClaudieMac and all of TAKE 6. Joey Joel KIbble can do anything.
Uh.. ok
Well now that you said that you think Joey should have lead that song , would u guys actually try it and let the fans see how it would or is different from the current version? And also , did you guys ever prefect the sound you were looking for ?
Pitch center....Give us an example ...we'd love to actually hear what you're speaking about....
