Had the same problem on my 2006 STS V6. Hard to believe, but the problem traced to a bad passenger side window switch. Crack open the window during rain and it runs right to the window switch, and poof; you now have a serious electrical GHOST running around your entire electrical system. You cannot just change out the switch panel for the buttons, you also have to reprogram it as a new install. Once "installed" everything works fine. I also ordered some of those add-on rain shields for all 4 windows!!! If you prefer to; go ahead and do the standard "replace all suspected modules and switches" in the trunk, under hood, transmission, electronics in shift system, etc... (see following suggestions in comments) including the start button first; if you like to spend money for nothing. I did. The new switch was $100. The cost to trace it out was $100. Spent $1,000 before the $200 fix. Mechanics don't refund labor or parts cost just because it didn't fix the problem. Suggest find a great electrical mechanic and keep him happy, rather than use a parts changer mechanic. Worth his weight in GOLD!
Yes... it's a very common issue. The switch is $37 and about 4 hours of labor to fix and a day to reinstall the shifter. I am in the process of fixing a 2008 STS I picked up with the same issue

Lol. This is the micro switches in the gear shifter. Extremely common problem. Not an “electrical issue”. It’s a common fault that’s easily fixed.
Please tell me how to fix this
How do you fix it
I figured it out
You did
Same thing happened to my V it was a faulty module in the trunk
Which module specifically

Bad neutral safety switch and no comm with Ecu. As shown by no CEL.
Isn't that inside the transmission?
