Hi! I found you because of your Epic reaction, but as someone who has wanted to write since middle school, I've been finding all your commentary and stuff about writing your first novel super interesting. What are some resources that you feel made a huge difference in getting you started and having a vision for your projects? Just asking because I'd love to check some of them out.
The first draft being bad truly is a total requirement. Most people would never get a first draft done if they tried to get it right. My philosophy was “shit everything out onto the page, you can sort through it later.” One of the ways I got over the hurdle of challenging myself to write badly is to write a good paragraph or so at the start of the draft, then use a highlight feature to highlight things I did not put much thought into, then highlight EVERYTHING
I myself have always been a mix between a plotter and a panter. I plot the broad overarching story, but along the way always slow down and fill in the gaps pieces of things I had never previously thought of. Story structure is very important. I think I also suffer from writer's block for that exact reason. I'm afraid of garbage. But I'm also too attached to the idea it'll turn out ok, so instead I've been getting feedback along the way, and meticulously editing the work I have done over and over. That being said I find myself making massive strides in progress over longer periods of time, so after my first draft is done, I'll see if I need to change that methodology based on the quality I end up with in the end. I'm not afraid of the productivity issue, so to speak. But I see your point in that, I could actually get the first draft done, and edit it at the end to get a product that's even better. So who knows. I shall see. I haven't actually dedicated a specific time. I do have a rule for my writing that is: "Write at some point today" but never a specific timeframe. I think I'll try that for sure! I feel like I have very strong character introductions for a handful of important characters, but when you went over the bit about them "appearing" without context, I realized that I also most definitely have made this mistake. I've put myself into an environment where the reader knows there is a certain amount of people present, and so throughout events I kind of just... chuck them in there, often without any tangible meaning behind it. Thanks for bringing that to my attention! I'll also DEFINITELY be checking out that character sheet video!!! :) also I loved your SSBU analogy lol
Ok i cant believe i have asked the important question Do you think wattpad is a good place to start? (1 hour and just a person comenting? Bro fell off)
@@user-ICY-Andreid lol fell of HARD 😂 😂 😂 And I think that it’s a totally acceptable place to get started. Personally my goal would just be to find any place to get writing that motivated you. My hesitation with real-time posting like Wattpad is that you get instant gratification on your writing which for me would make me feel like I have to be polished on my first draft. So for me I’m not sure I would personally do Wattpad or something similar, but for someone else I could see it being a great option
@@JacobPenrodWrites Well as someone that used to write on Wattpad, its like another social media like yt, that if you dont write on time people will lose interest, i leaved bc of that, too much preasure (Says the one who wants to do a lil vs show someday)
I related so much to most of what you mentioned haha I've written six whole drafts over seven years and all of what you said is nothing but the truth! Oh, and do you by chance have an Instagram? Would love to talk!

Truly I believe that the character is the real meat and potatoes of a book. The line-to-line bread and butter

@JacobPenrodWrites the danger of instant gratification is true. My transition from social media writing to writing in isolation was big for me.

No socials other than youtube currently, but they are likely in the works. Thanks so much for the comment! I'd love to talk as well.
@@JacobPenrodWrites Ahh! Do let me know once you've created your other socials :)
