- Installing a side mounting block is a great way to attach your porch lights to your house. The surface mounting block keeps your light fixtures straight and leveled. It also looks better than mounting it directly on the house siding itself. Find out how to install it properly.

Short, sweet, and to the point. Excellent job explaining. Thanks so much!😊
Im adding a 30amp generator plug receptacle on the side of my vinyl house so I just got the mounting block today but mine are gona be held by deck screws and then my outlet box with cover thise up for a clean look.
you could hide the cable wiring going around the door with some wood trim work and beatuify the appearance.
Thank you
Glad it helped you, thanks for the comment.
So if you have vinyl siding does the siding take the weight of whatever it is you are hanging? Meaning you dont have to find any sort of stud? Im just trying to hang a flag and dont want it to fall. Can the vinyl crack possibly?
The screws will go through the vinyl siding and into the wood sheathing under it. This should be enough support for a small flag. Obviously if you can find the stud it offers better support but for a small flag probably not needed. Make sure you use 3 inch screws. good luck!!
Do not follow the advice of this video if you want the job to be done correctly and look nice.
If you want to install a light on your house with vinyl siding then you need a J channel surface mount block with a junction box built in.
The advice that I just gave you is for vinyl siding with no existing junction box at the light location. You can also buy a junction box and the surface mount separately but it is more difficult. The reason you need the junction box is because that is what enclosed is the wiring and helps prevent a fire if there is a short.
Don’t get me wrong it CAN be done without a junction box but other than enclosing the wiring the junction box is what provides stability and it is what you attach your light to. If you were to just mount your light to the vinyl surface block, it would rip off.
One major mistake that a lot of people make is the same thing that this person does in the video. do you see the metal adapter(the metal circle that he put on top of the service block). That adapter is meant to be screwed into a metal junction box.
It’s not as big of a deal because he has wood siding, but if you had vinyl, then the surface block would be hollow and it would be crushed when you screwed it to the house.
@@russelleldridge3726 Thank you for the tip, but personally I am just looking to hang a flag. I agree a junction box would be a good idea for any electrical work. Since I'm not doing electrical do you see an issue with that?
The wires should be in a junction box.
Should, but plenty weren't installed that back in the day, and most are still going...
@@ThePTBRULES The fixture without a junction box that is outside of the door from the garage to the yard works fine. I bought an Arlington mount, but it's too wide so I haven't replaced that fixture.
No junction box?
Dont really need it, usually they just feed the electric wire through the sheeting. The mounting blockmactscas the junction box.
@da P.A : I'd be surprised if that meets code anywhere in the U.S., because you'll have connections outside a box.
@@ncooty it doesn't meet code. Unfortunately alot of vinyl siders dont know or care about codes
Surface mounting block. That’s the ticket. Thank you super job. Finally someone who knows what the f##k he’s talking about
See description for links. Thanks for commenting.
Looks like it's a rental so seems no one cares what it looks like. Siding needs to be patched, painted, and mounting block should be painted to match siding. Big gap left below block is sloppy.
yikes.
this is a complete violation disaster
Most older houses that's how it was. There is not outlet boxes. This us simply replacing the lights that were already there without outlet box. This is not new construction and the point of the video is how to install the mounting block with the available wiring you already have.
@@daP.A Ya get a pancake box to connect wire, it's the same thickness as the block, or ya get an Arlington boc that has a built in small wiring chamber. this is wrong
@@daP.A When doing repair work, it should be done to current code. Wiring junctions require they be in a box.
I see your point, luckily mine came with a junction box
Thanks to both
