To say we underachieved this season is ridiculous considering the players we had out through injury/suspension. And we did qualify for Europe but got bumped by Manure! 1st time we’ve finished above them too. We over achieved when qualifying for champions league and everyone thinks we should be in every season. How long was it we out of that 20years? We need to get back to reality and kick on this season

@@robertlough1685 the lack of first team players fit or available was a joke. We couldn’t rotate and the lads who played every week were exhausted. As players started coming back from injury we started getting back to winning ways. Yes they had quite a few poor performances but given the circumstances… we didn’t underachieve! If we had a handful of injured players then I would agree but we didn’t it was double figures for the majority of the season

I agree. A really tough season where overall we did well. Saying that top 4 is the minimum for the coming season is just stupid (so 5th is a failure?). There are at least 6 teams that are in as good or better position for this thanks largely to PSR. People need to get a reality check.

Its simple, you either move forward or you don't. The better players at the club know they are better and they can move on to fulfill their ambitions elsewhere. Keeping those players requires the club to be at a certain level. Blind fans with no concept of others think the players love the club just like they do and excuse failures and say there is always next season, the better players are 1 bad season from asking to leave. Elite sport is ruthless and a lot of our fans haven't caught on yet and they still think realistic fans are being ungrateful.

Our trajectory as a club since the take over was beyond even the owners. Realisticly we wanted gradual improvement season by season, but the year we qualify for the UCL hurt us in the long run with injuries and fitness.. even then we still manage to post our best offensive year.
I think the owners are reaching a point they have to decide now what is truly the next step for newcastle united (stadium, sponsors, staff and players)

We do need to offer some level of European football, sure, spending limits are not in our favour but we do need to really push the boat out to bring in top level players who want to be part of the 12 month plan.

How long is 'long term' and what is meant by 'credible competitor? 10 years, 15 years? Taking part in or winning competitions? We're already reaching the latter stages of the domestic cups. Is that sufficient?

Great pod as usual. I do want to say though, why do so many of you think it's a bad season without CL qualification. There are 6 clubs with much more resource than NUFC. Then we have Aston Villa who seem to be similar to us. Finishing in the top 4 out of that 8 is going to be really difficult. All of those clubs have players that expect to be playing champions league, but they can't all be in it.

Thank you John, glad you enjoyed the pod. Alex did make this point in the full version of the pod. It is going to be very difficult year on year to qualify for champions league, like you say, there are 8 teams realistically fighting for the spots and they are only going to get better. Although this season, with the expanded Champions league group stage and then you have the uncertainty of new managers appointed at the clubs etc, next season offers NUFC a great chance to go and get in there again.

PCP brokered the deal, built a board capable of large success which will have been the remit. Suspect they were planning on staying until a trophy delivered but the PSR issues were probably perceived as underperformance by PCP by PIF.
I think once the stadium upgrade is done, the training ground built and anything else they have planned then the Reuben’s then sell up. They have huge investment in Newcastle so they have the relationships with the council and others that may cause issues.

The first year of the takeover would be the one we posted the most losses.
We spent 90m to stay up, and losses that year must be the lions share of the 105m allowable PSR losses.
That year is now off the three year cycle, and the real question is what losses did we post that year as that's the cushion we now have for PSR.
We could have 50 60 70m losses to play with for our PSR plus what we have to spend.
We should have a decent amount to spend, we bid for Olise and spoke to him, we wouldn't be making bids like that if we didn't have money in the pot.

We spent £115m that first season because there was Willock bought for £25M in the summer too.
We lost £70M that first year.
Our revenue was only £180M in that first season while it’s expected to be at least £300M this season.
So taking all of that into account we could spend £305M and still balance the 3 year PSR calculations.
However, the new UEFA squad squad cost ratio comes into place and while it isn’t the final 70% limitation yet it’s likely Newcastle will aim to get close to that figure to prevent issues going forward.
That SCR is going to be the limiting factor this year so I doubt we’ll get anywhere close to the £305M we could have spent under PSR. At most I’d expect £100M plus sales as our budget.
Really hope I’m wrong but these rules are just too restrictive now it’s ridiculous

Even then I think we’ll spend up to £40M on a CB (I’d love us to spend more and go for Silva though), I think we’ll spend up to £60M on the RW and £20-30M on a young striker (hoped we might have took a chance on Liam Delap from City for £20M but last I heard he was going to Ipswich)
I agree with a lot of your comments, the club needs to have a better window, they need to show intent, they need to back Howe and I agree where we need to strengthen.
I just disagree with some of your panel that we should expect top 5. Financially, it’s just not a level playing field, each year we are underdogs and it’s a decent achievement to finish above any of them, if this year we need 2 of those teams plus Villa to drop off to get 5th and that’s not easy.
No Europe will help and I’m hopefully but it will be an big achievement to get Europe this season and a huge achievement to get CL football again

Your just adding pressure on peoples shoulders, we ARE a wip, and progress IS needed, but money is key here, we not at the corrupt 6 level yet. We will also find out in the short term which players actually joined for the "project". Remember 22-23 we shocked alot of opposition with our play and finished 4th. 23-24 was absolutely down to rotten luck with injuries. 24-25 I'd be happy 6th. The people running the club aren't stupid.

Knockin on 3 years now and in terms of physical infrastructure which they are allowed to spend on - the Sports Direct signage has come down and the training ground has had a lick of paint . It doesnt smack of ambition and doesnt bode well for future investment

how would we have paid for 2 players in Jan with FFP limitations - we would have had to sell even more in june - we probably would have lost Gordon or Isak to balance the books. There's nothing else to discuss - FFP is the only issue, and it is a huge issue.

All the talk of "backing Howe," look at the financial emergency we were in at the end of June. We didn't have the money to spend cuz of the BS PSR

Buy a left back? Seriously! 4th is an unrealistic expectation unless we get some elite signings but it's what we need.
Also how on earth were we going to buy two players in January with our PSR problems? And yes the summer signings were awful when faced with the Champions League fixtures.

So we can’t spend really big or outspend the rest of the big clubs yet we should be challenging for the top spot according to these four. How does that work then, yet say we underachieved last season when we lost our goalkeeper and entire back 4 apart from Scharr for large chunks of the season. Let’s see we finished seventh last season yet what clubs above us would have Dubravka, Krafth, Lascelles, Longstaff, Murphy, Almiron and a 17 year old Lewis Miley who all played a huge amount of games in their first team. One last thing to say we should of signed two more players in January, seriously what are you talking about we had to sell Anderson and Minteh to raise the £50 million for psr at the end of June so if we had spent in January we would have had to of had a fire sale and every player worth any value would of been up for grabs.

This makes sense guts, we love Eddie, however he has a young family wife ect, if he is offered the national job, part time 5 million quid per Yr, and given Mitchell has prevoius with Poch....I think the righting is on the wall. I don't like it..but that's our path

Not so sure about Darren Eales, wasn't happy with him basically telling the world about selling players coz of pif, made me feel very uncomfortable, does he know the track record of the previous owner, with Amanda it showed she was bothered about the effect of the changes would have on the fans and wanted to keep everyone in the loop, Eales just with that statement made me feel like everyone is disposable, he needs to keep in mind that the reason our biggest success is at home games and doesn't want to alienate the fans and treat us like numbers, and don't tip off the opposition when we might be in a tight situation, the Gordon situation really got my back up and because Eales had let teams know we maybe had to sell one of our best players it made it harder to offload the ones we needed to sell

Eddie Howe improves every player and plays front foot exciting football, he is quality. It would be unfair to expect him to produce champions league football with the current player group. Every player that is not going to be better next season than last needs to be shipped out and upgraded. Examples Lascelles, Dubravka, Ritchie, Longstaff, Miggy, Wilson, Trippier, Schar, Burn. All of which can still fetch a price but may not soon. These players are not getting top 5 this season.
