  • We took a trip to Rutland Water to visit Bugtopia to take part in a Twilight Trek Experience.
The collection is small and entirely indoors. Sadly the collection closed due to the pandemic but has re-opened as Rutland Zoo, which we hope to visit in the future.
Bugtopia housed meerkats, raccoon dogs, a solitary raccoon and many reptiles, such as a false water cobra, that made for enjoyable viewing. They also had a small tropical walk-through that housed agouti, Lady Amherst's pheasant, lapwings and Egyptian fruit bats. I believe most of these animals are still there.
The highlight was the twilight trek experience which took place after hours, where we got a guided tour by the amazing keeper Dan, and got to meet some reptiles and watched the fruit bats flying around. It was worth the trip and hope Rutland Zoo look to offer this in the future.
