Why Erstwhile Proposed Textile Park Near Mattewara Forest Was An Invitation To Ecological Disaster?

The Punjab Government in 2020 revealed its plan to set up an industrial park at Mattewara. After change of government in 2022, the new government renamed it as "Kum-Kalan Textile park". In this plan industry was to be setup on 1000 acres of land in the flood plains of Satluj river near Mattewara forest.
Public Action Committee, a Ludhiana based civil society group, opposed this plan. After PAC held a gathering at the banks of Satluj river on 10 July 2022, the government invited it for a meeting on 11 July 2022. In 11 July meeting the government announced to withdraw its' plan to setup textile/industrial park in this area.
Earlier, on 1 July 2022, Public Action Committee had held a press conference at Chandigarh Press Club in which it showed a presentation explaining that why textile or industrial park near mattewara forest would be an open invitation for ecological disaster.
