  • Shallow water is often the safest place a person can be while swimming in the ocean, but sometimes sharks can venture to the shore and attack in the shallows like what happened to Luis Soares de Arruda.

As someone who was raised on an island in the Caribbean, if a beach is shark infested, the government keeps the beach closed and they take it very seriously and there security there to ward off bathers and surfers. I blame the authorites and furthermore, if the beach is known to have sharks why would you go there in the first place?

I work with a gentleman from a Caribbean island. He told me when he was younger ,around 20 yrs old he was offered a job where they would train him to scuba dive in order to clean the bottom of the boats in the marina. He said there was a net across the harbour to prevent shark incursions.
He was considering taking on the training but before he did a security guard stopped him one morning and took him over to a mid sized Hammerhead which had been caught on the inside of the net.He went on to work in carpentry instead

In 1998, I was bite in the butt by a shark at Santa Monica beach in California. I had been body surfing and crashing on the sand a lot. Needless to say, I suffered a lot of sand burns, but the fun I was having out weighed anything else. When I got bite in the butt by a shark I thought it was just another sand burn. Moments, or seconds, later a life guard swam out to me and told me to get back to shore. I left a trail of blood. The beach was closed because of the attack and my blood. What I remember the most was that everyone in California hated me for closing down the beach. I have never returned to open waters since. Now, I only swim in lakes. So, if any of you readers were there back in 1998, I'm sorry. I promised never to go back and I haven't. In fact, I've never gone back to California. As far as my right butt cheek, it was healed after four months. But, I still have a hole in my butt.

This beach in northeast of Brazil is worldwide famous because of the shark attacks since 1992, in those waters are inhabited by tiger sharks (Galeocerdo cuvier) and Bull sharks (Carcharinus leucas) who are highly aggressive.
The explanation about why there's so many shark attacks on this area is because of the construction of the Suape port resulted in the destruction of a mangrove area and some coral reefs that were used as nurseries by sharks and were also home to other species of marine animals such as fish, mollusks, crustaceans, turtles and seabirds. With the destruction of their habitat, the sharks migrated to areas close to the most frequented beaches and became more aggressive.

Terrifying. Tiger sharks would swallow u whole if not take limbs. I couldn't imagine what his kids and family are going through!!! Reminds me of Shirley Durbin. They ignored the signs to a large shark was spotted in the area that day. 6 feet of water she was gone. I've lived in Florida all my life and the worst one that happened here was in Bociega Bay where the father was attacked by a bullshark behind his house where he swam for 20 years. He was bitten twice leaving a crescent moon shape from arm to thighs taking out his liver. His wife and family have never recovered from it. I actually am proud to my know his grandson were very close. One of the greatest souls. This is the Kubinski attack btw. Please be careful guys. We've had so many attacks here in Florida esp after the hurricane the waters are dirty and murkey. Don't swim at night or early morning. I'm not saying don't go for a dip. The more u stay in the water the more chances of u getting attacked. Stay in a group. Do not surf. We had so many tourist here in Clearwater surfing hurricane waves. When traveling check out the areas and don't take any risks. It's also cheaper to go to a rec center w ur kids if u can't afford a pool. Swim at ur own risk. My prayers go out to his family 🫶💗💌💟

I live on an island, thanks to this channel & sharks happen, I would only bring my son to the bay this year which I only did once at the very beginning of the summer & even though I know there are no dangerous sharks in those waters, I wouldn’t let him go in any further than where the water met the sand. Then for extra precaution, I put the fear of God in him by telling him how most shark attacks seem to happen when little boys pee in the water (which I actually think is true, pee & puke for some reason seems to attract them) but what wasn’t true was that there are huge great white sharks in that bay which I also told him lol the entire time my child was on the water line I kept having intrusive thoughts/visions of a shark snatching him, by far the least relaxing trip to the beach in my life!! Needless to say, we’ve spent the rest of the summer in pools lol

Having been a beach lifeguard for 20 years in the panhandle of Florida, I can tell you that more often than not, when a report has been drafted by county lifeguards, park service rangers, firemen/EMS/Paramedics(1st responders), and perhaps some others considered "low on the chain" of employees working for a county or state, the commissioners that sit on the board or certain politicians don't put out the warnings that you would expect (signage/mass media) and often nothing is done the following days/weeks/months/ever if the event occurred in an area that thrives on tourism and the big $ that it brings.
Silver lining: has been almost a decade since I worked on beaches and times have changed with the advent of technology.
Almost everyone has a camera on their cell phone, knows how to film/take pictures, and has a phone with these features.
The public is all about getting some captures that they can post online these days.
Things that would have been put in "damage control" are now put on the web and go "viral".
      Amen!
Same for ball lightning, swamp gas, balloons, and other strange unidentified flying objects. 😏
While there is a lot of garbage to trudge through, there are still gems to be found and passed on to others.
When going to an unfamiliar body of water, forest, or place it is a good idea to check out local information on social media, youtube, and MAYBE the chamber of commerce or local news.
Panhandle shark attacks this summer alone landed 5 people in the hospital a few miles from my house (Sacred Heart Hospital).
