I think Michaels' person was his father. And when he passed, it took Mikes ego and drive to another level, because he lost the greatest thing in his life, and he knew he could never win that back.
People forget though, as egotistical as he may have been, somehow he was humble enough to put in all the work which makes me think he wasn't really egotistic but rather he was trying to get an edge on his opponents. He outworked everyone, I would assume if he was that egotistical he would think he doesn't have to
if you look at videos of him talking to dikembe mutombo and others hes very respectful and mannered to them, even the way he sits when talking to them, and you can tell how much respect he had for magic and bird as he said he wanted to catch them etc
Lol, imagine thinking Jordan was egotistical or narcissistic rather than the truth which is the man was a confident warrior who just happened to be playing a ball game.
Egotistical is a poor description of Jordan. Being super competitive is not the same as having an enhanced view of oneself. The dude knows how good he was and he earned it. He went into the league believing he was at the bottom. He left the league knowing he was at the top. To this day he won't publicly say he is the best ever.
Michael Jordan had Phil Jackson. And while he was egotisical, with time he learned to trust his teammates. But yes. Probably the biggest competitor in the history of NBA.

If LeBron had a guy like Scottie with him in Cleveland...on top of that guys like Grant,Rodman,Harper etc..he would never leave the Cavs.
Tim Grover (MJ’s trainer) was instrumental in MJ becoming as great as he became. He was great prior to meeting him but truly went to another level mentally with him.
Hell yeah , that's cool. I always find stuff like that really interesting , idk? Why? Maybe it's partly because my ego wouldn't ever let me look at things from that perspective? Maybe? Idk? Or maybe ? It's a fantasy to be a rich and famous athlete , and that's kinda part of deal, when u are or become one, anyways that's interesting!
@@chaosdweller It was Michael's hard work no doubt. It was not his job to come up with the most effective training drills. It was his willingness to repeat them relentlessly and take them more serious than any other player that put him at that level. I've only seen Kobe treat the game with the same level of dedication.
Yes his mindset lead to incredible success, and I'd imagine Genghis khan also had the same mindset of utter dominance, but this mindset does not help with building good character. I mean to each his own, but I wouldn't want to have that mindset. It's ironically limiting to look at everything as a competition, it actually not healthy.
MJ is not limited to that. He's actually also a graceful loser. He even makes things up just to get him motivated. The point is, at the end of the day, he has the most fun doing whatever he does.
@@aideethree3 well Genghis khan was an extreme example. But the idea here is that if you make everything a competition than that becomes your nature. Then you start to perceive everything from a competitive mindset, and life isn't all about competition. It is from that standpoint that this mindset is limited, and having fun doesn't justify it. I mean cocaine is hella fun...
It seems like people often conflate narcissism, ego, extreme motivation, and grounded confidence. Michael Jordan isn't narcissistic. He doesn't suffer from delusions of grandeur or megalomania. He's the best player in basketball because he was talented, confident in his skills, and extremely driven. He has the points, accolades, and championships to back it all up. Narcissists build walls of delusions around themselves that everyone else can see besides the narcissist.

I always wondered whether ego played a part in physical development. Jordan's brothers are all 5'5 ish, his dad wasn't tall, yet Jordan was 6'6 and had some of the biggest hands in the game. It's bizarre to me.
In 1989 Jordan wanted no part of a one one game magic was trying to organize. He was scared bc he was known as the unstoppable one on one player and if he lost to the great team player magic was well there goes that. They made excuses about scheduling problems but he was shook.
Huge difference between ego and confidence. As a former racing driver I can tell you having confidence in yourself and youre machine does make you're performance that much better. Ego is great until you're knocked down. That ego gets you nowhere. Confidence can help you bounce back
I think when you're that talented and gifted at anything it's not ego it's simply confidence in your abilities you're amazing extraordinary borderline superhuman abilities.

Thank God it wasn't just me who doesn't like the new studio.
That person didn't just criticize Jordan, he said he was better and that he could beat him. I think he challenged him.
that's about the worst criticism you could level at Jordan. lol.
Michael Jordan may have never become the GOAT if he didn't have the balancing presence of Phil Jackson.
true....but to what extent? the years that Phil didnt have michael they only got 2nd round outs, then he comes back and 3 peats again
@@bomigaruba4433 that’s not his point
Michael Jordan was being called the GOAT before he even entered the NBA and Phil Jackson never came anywhere near repeating his success that he had with Bulls. It's funny how biases change over time. In the 90's, Phil Jackson wasn't given enough credit because people said anyone could coach Jordan and Pippen. Now people wanna be different and say it was all Phil Jackson. Nope. It was Jordan.
@@laythadrian5705 it's called recency bias😂😂😂
@@bomigaruba4433 wait, without Jordan the Bulls made the 2nd round? But when LeBron leave a team they go to the lottery?
Corey Benjamin when MJ was a retired 36 year old.
Oj Mayo and Byron Russell from the Jazz did it(before they actually met in the finals twice)
O J Mayo was the number 1 player in the nation and was talking shit to Jordan at his basketball camp. Jordan had been retired for like 3-4 years by then?? Jordan bust his ass
marshall he was also a high school kid
That is correct
Confidence and obsession is key to being wildly success.
They are mixing ego with confidence. That's the problem I have. You can believe in yourself without being egotistical
Imo to be successful you don't need to be obsessive you should just try finish what you start.
It will also be the thing that ends you if you aren’t able to manage it
You need a bit of OCD to be successful. Not off your rocker OCD but a tad to stay on task no matter what.
successful not success.
ahh. Another episode of my favorite dmt sunburnt lobster.
It isn't as simple as big ego or small ego. Jordan was also wise and humble in the general context. His ultra competitive spirit on the court does not mean he is actually a narcissist.
The key to Jordan is his belief in his father. His parents.
You didn't watch the documentary?
Jordan was just unhuman. Lebron doesn’t give off that kind of feeling
Ofc he does, he’s been dominating the league for a decade and is one of the most athletic talents we’ve ever seen
MJ and Kobe were the only ones with that attitude. Lebron is just really good but was always missing the mentality to make him the best
Mr. Josh did you watch the 2018 playoffs?
Then why did you mention him? This video is about jordans ego.
Lebron beats Michael in nearly every category except rings... and bron aint done
OJ Mayo was the kid he beat one on one I remember hearing about it maybe why OJ lost his Grove in NBA
No. He was always a decent player. 6 man. He piss hot for cocaine. Banned from leauge

@@iceking6387 He was reinstated in 2018 not signed by anyone so playing in Puerto Rico
Which retirement? They might be talking about the Corey Benjamin clip at the bulls practice facility after he retired the first time.... There's a video clip of Jordan talking shit to some guy while playing pick up in the Bahamas with Tom brady! He just doesn't give a shit period he'll talk shit to anyone anytime
This happened when OJ was in high school at a camp if I remember correctly
Good point - Ego leads into the land of delusion. Hard work, dedication, sacrifice = Victory 🏀
stop it. the man has a MASSIVE ego. massive. but he also has integrity, honor and sportsmanship
Jordan's ego may be legendary, but his skills are unquestionable. He walks the talk.
His intangibles were an A+. His physical gifts were an A+. His skills were an A+. His fundamentals were an A+.
Ronda rousey comes to mind when Joe mentioned that some ego maniacs can’t take an L and leave
Lol, imagine thinking Jordan was egotistical or narcissistic rather than the truth which is the man was a confident warrior who just happened to be playing a ball game.
he is egotistical and narcissistic. he was also a confident warrior
"Joe said i have huge ego. Thats all i needed... I took it personal.. Now i started jordan's podcast and i have 1 billion subscribers"
Eh he wouldn't get 1 billion subscribers
@@Just_nick3070 maybe not a billion but his documentary got better ratings than the ongoing NBA finals
Jordan reads the title of the video....
MJ: SHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEET..... “That’s all I needed, it became personal for me.”
*Joe talking about MJ’s ego*
MJ: “..And I took offense to that.”
Jordan was the goat 🐐 before Phil Jackson
Without Jackson and Pippen he wouldn't have won any titles.
@@darrenhoffer4693 - Mike was so great that people like you expected him to win titles on his own without any HOF teammates in a team sport something that was only done by Hakeem Olajuwon in 93’-94’ every great player had multiple or 1 other HOF on their team but MJ gets trashed just for having Scottie just shows the standards people hold him to.
Nasir Cartier III fax bruh, even Lebron couldn’t win the chip by himself, that’s why he have to jump team to team in his career in order to win every last one of his rings.
@@kevindurant1148 Horrace Grant was an all-star level player. Toni Kukoč today would be a top 3 pick and would get his own team. His succes in EU before NBA can be compared to Luka Doncic. Denis Rodman is one of the greatest rebounders and all-around defenders of all times. Capable shooters like Steve Kerr,Jud Buechler,BJ Armstrong,John Paxon. Ron Harper was a very good point guard also. Phil Jackson on the bench and great assistant coaches. MJ had help,he had a great team around him. If LeBron had a guy like Scottie with him in Cleveland...on top of that guys like Grant,Rodman,Harper etc..he would never leave the Cavs.
It is super important because if you stay on the background you don’t get credit for what you did.
"Some get psychologically defeated and are never the same again" -Rogan talking about Ronda Rousey, lol
1:52 Joe is talking about Ronda Rousy.

I agree
MJ is not limited to that. He's actually also a graceful loser. He even makes things up just to get him motivated. The point is, at the end of the day, he has the most fun doing whatever he does.
@@aideethree3 well Genghis khan was an extreme example. But the idea here is that if you make everything a competition than that becomes your nature. Then you start to perceive everything from a competitive mindset, and life isn't all about competition. It is from that standpoint that this mindset is limited, and having fun doesn't justify it. I mean cocaine is hella fun...
Everything is a competition
@@haqq1 MJ won't be the goat without that mindset. It is what made him great. Every athlete could only wish they have that.
Joe, Michael had tim Grover. Who Michael considered “the asshole” lol. That’s who kept his body going and would let him know what he needed to work on - to keep his body running properly. It’s not just boxers and fighters who have an honest trainer lol.

Wayne Gretzky got to all time greatness without the ego.
So did Bo Jackson
That studio is an unbearable downgrade :/
Huge difference between ego and confidence.
As a former racing driver I can tell you having confidence in yourself and youre machine does make you're performance that much better. Ego is great until you're knocked down. That ego gets you nowhere. Confidence can help you bounce back
I think when you're that talented and gifted at anything it's not ego it's simply confidence in your abilities you're amazing extraordinary borderline superhuman abilities.
Phil Jackson was Jordan’s equivalent of Tyson’s coach. Taught him how to win and trust his teammates
Joe's studio is looking like Pizza Hut from back in the day.
