This is Kacee's first time watching reaction to the movie "The Mist ". After a powerful storm damages their Maine home, David Drayton (Thomas Jane) and his young son head into town to gather food and supplies. Soon afterward, a thick fog rolls in and engulfs the town, trapping the Draytons and others in the grocery store. Terror mounts as deadly creatures reveal themselves outside, but that may be nothing compared to the threat within, where a zealot (Marcia Gay Harden) calls for a sacrifice.

@@user-xp5lc5so1x they drive to get out of New England, seeing many creatures as they drive. They stop for the night at a Howard Johnson, and David mentions that when he was tuning the radio trying to get a signal, he thinks he heard the word "Hartford", but he's not really sure if he heard it, so he plans to head there. The novella is written from his PoV, and it turns out that he's writing this all down as a record, and states his intention to leave the pages on the counter in hopes someone will find them. So the reader doesn't know what happens to them.
The funny thing, one of the paragraphs near the end before he explains the radio says:
... But you mustn’t expect some neat conclusion. There is no "And they escaped from the mist into the good sunshine of a new day" ; or "When we awoke the National Guard had finally arrived"; or even that great old standby: "It was all a dream". It is, I suppose, what my father always frowningly called “an Alfred Hitchcock ending,” by which he meant a conclusion in ambiguity that allowed the reader or viewer to make up his own mind about how things ended. My father had nothing but contempt for such stories, saying they were “cheap shots.”
So it's interesting that Darabont went with giving it an ending. I guess he's like David's dad. :)

For those who don't know, the painting from the beginning was Roland, the gunslinger from the dark tower series. Bit only is this a nod to another stephen king story but in the series (which deals with parallel universes among other things) the space between universe is called Todash space and all kinds of beasts and monsters live in the void between worlds. Its heavily implied that's what's in the mist. Creatures from the todash.
Funner fact: Pennywise, from IT, is theorized to be from todash space too as in the dark tower series there's another character similar to Pennywise that seems to feed on laughter instead of fear.

this might have already been said, but the director originally wanted to have the film released in black and white, and you can get a special edition release of it like that, but the studio vetoed it for the general release. Its great in black and white, really fits with the direction and filmography of it, gives it that late 50s horror vibe.
As for the Mist itself, its actually part of the extended ethos of the Stephen King universe where all his stories interconnect with The Dark Tower series. The mist is actually what exists inbetween realities/universes, its where the darkness and chaos were pushed, so its the realm of nightmares and evil gods. There are parts of the world where the fabric of reality gets thin, and the military ripped a hole in reality letting the mist and all the creatures in. If I remember the ending of the book correctly, there is no rescue, it ends with them continuing to travel in a world consumed by the mist. The ending was changed by Frank Darabont, and he showed it to Stephen King who said that it was brilliant and he wished he had of thought of it.

But a community dedicated to talking about and planning unavaliving your whole family only for you to be alive is...beyond my comprehension of what I've learned about psych profiles, especially for that type, who usually falls to their catastrophic thoughts and spirals into a period of a feeling of loneliness and appearance of withdrawal from the family that leads up to the incident and overall emotional outbreak, which is EXACTLY what we saw in this movie. Once that trigger of "Yes" or "This is the time" had entered their brain, there's no going back for some people. It's now a mission that has to be carried out. I think that's why they pulled outside the car when he pulled the trigger on them. The Mist is such an effective thriller ... with interesting monsters, good performances, and strong suspense and shocks. I bought the blu ray recently; besides the theatrical version it also includes writer/director Frank Darabont's perferred black-and-white version.
I seem to remember that Mr. King's novella ends with the handful of characters driving and wondering if they're doomed, and a while later David is scanning the car radio and suddenly hears the word "Hartford" spoken. So there's a possible glimmer of hope. But Stephen King _loves_ the movie's ending so much more than what he wrote himself.

Yup. We can be either awesome or disastrous at cooperation in the midst of a crisis. The Air Force literally trains rank to speak up and strive to keep order. To be prepared to take charge in an emergency. A single cool head or confident voice can be the difference between order and chaos. Give people direction and they'll want to work together. Give panic a chance to fill the void and things will break down hard.

I hope these "as we go" helps
    1. In context it is similar to what King did with The Stand except in this case it's monsters and not a virus.
    2. Jeffery DeMunn is known as a favorite of director Frank Darabont, who has cast him in all four of his films: "The Shawshank Redemption" (1994), "The Green Mile" (1999), and "The Mist" (2007). All King adaptations. He was also in what King himself says "Storm of the Century" was such a good screenplay that he adapted into a book.
    3. William Sadler also was in "Shawshank" and "The Green Mile".
    4. Frances Sternhagen was in "Misery" by King.
    5. Marcia Gay Harden kills it.
6.King wanted to play the big guy that goes out with the rope around his waist "brass balls" but Darabont shot him down.
    7. This is not how the book ends. Darabont wanted this ending. King later said that as horrific that it is he likes it better. What makes this ending more devastating is he has to live with it the rest of his life 🥵
    8. The picture of the cowboy is an Easter egg from King's "Dark Tower" series
    9. The cool thing about this story is, since the creatures are from a different dimension, they could be anything.😱😱😱😱😱😱
    10. Stephen King. You're welcome.

The Mist is a short story and I've read the book probably 10 times. This ties into Stephen King's biggest, most encompassing story: The Dark Tower. Stephen King ties dozens of his books into The Dark Tower in a very cool way. The basic idea is that there are many worlds (universes) and there are ways to get from one to another, both natural and man made doors. And then there is space between these worlds called Todash. And Todash is filled with nightmarish monsters. So The Mist is about the military accidentally opening a doorway into Todash. I know Kacee loves reading, so PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE read The Dark Tower series. It has everything . . . Action, Drama, Romance, Comedy, Science Fiction, Fantasy, Horror, Suspense. . . And it just has great characters and compelling story. I hope you end up reading them.

Carol and her children survived because, unlike the other characters in the movie, she didn't let her fear control her. All the factions in the movie were all ruled by fear. The rationalists were afraid and tried to deny that there was a problem even with all the evidence around them; the religious fanatics were scared and turned to a madwoman to save them; and in the end, Thomas Jane and his crew lost hope and gave up, deciding to take the easy way out. Everyone except Carol let their fears control their actions; she, instead, overcame her own fears for the sake of her children and that is why in the end she triumphed while everyone else failed.

normally in extreme emergency scenarios it would take the military same day to 3 days to come and help... if the situation is bad like in the movie it could take longer or they may decide to just scorch earth the entire area. It can be a gamble to stay same as leaving, it can be the military cant come cause the situation is bad... the area is deemed lost and would get bombed, or the military clears the area and emergency help arrives. It would be a matter of having radio or some sort of signal to truly know what is going on, the movie did not show any cellphones or radio if i remember right.

I agree the ending is what makes this movie. I found some of the usual King tropes (like the religious nutjob) to be grating and I'm not sure I would have rewatched this movie again if it was for the tragic ending. My mouth was agape that a major mainstream movie went there and apparently it isn't how King's story ends (I haven't read it) but he came around to really appreciating it. I do think this ruthless choice elevates the story a lot.

You guys have to think, movies tamper with the perception of time all the time. What you may think happened in seconds or minutes in a story could actually be a lot longer. These bigger budget movies you definitely have to take with a grain of salt. Pacing is something that filmmakers have to be conscious of. A lot of times things are edited for time, pacing, suspense or many other factors.
I think the scenes leading up to the end were obviously sped up. Those quieter moments when they all agreed that they would rather be shot than eaten by multidimensional creatures…there’s no way those types of decisions would be made lightly, know what I mean?
    Otherwise, foresight…

12:21 In a crisis people go into DENIAL. That's the thing. When you watch a movie like this and you see people literally screaming that there isn't a thing, even though we know there is a thing, it's because of denial. It can move mountains when humans get together in denial. That's how cults are born, sadly.
17:01 Chaos and confusion. We've had entire military divisions go the wrong way because someone thought they heard X when Y was being said.
23:47 Probably the biggest thing inspired by this story was the original Half-Life. So much so, that the tentative title for Half-Life was "Quiver" as in "Project Arrowhead." Seriously, the story in Half-Life is scientists in a military base open a portal to an alien realm, and alien wild life pours into the base.
The ending is actually quite rational. Three days in, the entire world seems to be overrun with monsters. Anyone who goes out almost certainly dies. They drove quite a long distance and The Mist didn't seem to end. David is the model of even keel, rational thinking. That's how the movie hoodwinks you. His decision makes perfect sense. In the end, especially, wherein his son was concerned. Better to end it yourself than end up as a very long meal for baby spiders, or who knows what else. One bullet, and he is spared all that trauma.
King prefers the Darabont ending to his story over the more vague one found in the original story. This absolutely fits the themes of the story. We all have our own "Mist" to overcome. It is a metaphor for ignorance. You don't know. Know of us do.

  • @tensaibr
    @tensaibr 7 месяцев назад +2

They likely thought that the mist had taken the whole world by then. Because the environment became more and more alien and the aliens bigger, the further they drove. So for them, it stopped being about when they'd get rescued, or find a way out being replaced with when they'd end up having to face an inevitable death.
