      @@staceyvitale So they are also responsible for not getting licensed to hold on historical pieces. Their workers probably didn't even know the damage that wearing it could do, they weren't trained. You can see it by the videos where they're wearing gloves to hold the dress, even if fashion historians say it's best to hold it with your hands to do less damage. Non licensed institutions shouldn't have such pieces in the first place

      The Monroe dress was owned by Ripleys Believe it or Not after winning it in an auction and lent to Kim K after Kris called to complain.
      The worlds of collecting, selling, donating, and displaying art are so vast and complex with their own politics within each world. Unfortunately things of value gets lost throughout time due to lack of care or education, lack of finance and individual selfish agendas

I pray that gown went to the hands of a skilled restoration person who can source the same crystal beads from that era, and can reinforce the seams that was stressed using conservator's techniques similar on how they reinforce Queen Victoria's gowns for display. I even have a blue dress similar to that in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (mine is much easier to walk in...lol). Many of her styles were used by dollmakers - Barbie being one - Bob Mackie has multiple limited editions with Barbie. If you look at the Jem and the Holograms line, there were many influences in colour palette, and designs.
      The Oyster dress is horrendously ugly. I know that McQueen "pushed boundaries" of fashion, but it's inelegant despite the meaning of it being a "female warrior emerging from beneath the battered shell".
      I also fail to see why no-one has mentioned the first owner, Angie Barrett, who wore the dress to The (Beaux) Art Ball at Cannes FF in 2003.
      Despite not being a fan of the Kardashians, WHY is everyone obsessing over a dress from the 2020 oscars?
      At the Met Gala, KK changed into the gown in a dressing room at the bottom of the steps, and then into a replica of the Diamond dress for the remainder of the event.

    This woman is rich enough to commission an exact replica of these dresses so that they can be preserved and would actually flatter her, but instead she is so full of herself she thinks she deserves to wear the exact originals. This is so ridiculous.

      exactly. her body is very different from the measurements of these dresses. She couldn't of been comfortable squeezing in Marilyn Monroe's gown. Nor she would of been comfortable with this one. She could of had her own "Swan dress" moment and have something made that fits her perfectly, and steal the show with how drop dead gorgeous it is.

    The thing is: She (or maxbe Kayne) bought it. It belongs to her. It may upset people but she can do what she wants with it. And it is a dress... it is meant to be worn even if it is haute couture. The same thing with the Monroe dress. She payed to rent it. It's Ripley's that decided that this is a good idea.

    She could've gotten a tailor to make a replica of the McQueen dress, one that matched her measurements too. She could've done the same thing with the Marilyn dress too.
    Who the hell keeps approving her wearing these masterpieces and then ruining them. These dresses should've been kept in a museum, locked away and under controlled conditions.

      I watched their show. She didn't do anything to it. She couldn't zip it up, so she altered her own spanx and jazzed it up to blend in with the dress, so the dress was open at the back what we were actually seeing at the back was a modified spanx!

    While I do understand the backlash about the Monroe's dress, this one is a mystery to me. The first one was an actual artifact - not because it was the only one existing but because it also had a history attached to it, it was a statement more than a wear piece. Maybe I missing something, and McQueen's dress has such kind of story, too, but as far as I know, it's just considered unique. Given the fact there are two of them, and the other one is in the museum, for me it's more than enough "safety" for a dress that is just that - a dress

    I don't know why she bought the second oyster dress and then paid a 3rd party to alter it, rather than just getting in contact with the house of Alexander McQueen and getting them to make her one to her measurements. That's literally what couture is, and I can't imagine them refusing to do it for her (or do it for Kanye, on her behalf, seeing as it was a gift).

      They wouldn’t have made it because the person who made it is no longer alive. It being archival I am surprised they let her have it. But fashion houses won’t just jump to remake an archival piece for anyone. They may have been okay to make something similar, but archival pieces hold their worth because they are never remade.
