The bloodshed in the Middle East has revived doubts about the possibility of Arabs and Jews ever living in peace with each other. It seems that despite relative progress toward reconciliation in the last seven years, basic hostility is still strong, waiting for periodic, violent eruption.
Two new studies shed interesting light on the subject.
Ariella Oppenheim, a senior geneticist in the Hebrew University's hematology department and at Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem, has concluded a study showing that the genetic makeup of Jews and Arabs is almost identical, and that the two groups share common prehistoric ancestors.
In the study, soon to be published in the journal Human Genetics, Dr. Oppenheim and her research colleagues investigate the history of Jewish and Arab men by analyzing the genetic changes in the Y chromosome, which determines the male gender and is passed on from father to son.
The results of the study, Dr. Oppenheim told the newspaper Ha'aretz, "support the historical documentation according to which the Arabs are descendants of an ancient population of the country and a large proportion of them were Jews who converted to Islam after Islam reached Eretz Israel in the 7th century."
Palestinians and Israelis, then, are children of Abraham not only in the spiritual, religious sense but also in the most scientific one. The current violence is a family fight indeed.
While this study establishes the great genetic affinity between Jews and Arabs, another study reveals sharp differences in attitudes.
Early last year, 2,500 Jewish and Arab youths in Israel and the Palestinian Authority areas were asked to fill out questionnaires as part of a joint project run by Shifra Sagy, head of the Education Department at Ben-Gurion University, and Sami Adwan of Bethlehem University. The study, funded by the Rabin Center in Tel Aviv, sought to discover how young Israelis and Palestinians felt about peace. The results, which have been just released, are quite discomforting.
Participants were presented with various means by which the dispute might be resolved, and asked whether they agreed or disagreed. Asked if the Israeli-Palestinian conflict would "eventually be resolved by an agreement," 67 percent of young Jewish Israelis agreed, while only 29 percent of the Palestinians did.
Since these results reflect attitudes before the recent violence erupted, one can assume that the figures would be lower today. Indeed, recent public opinion polls indicate that 62 percentof Israelis still support the peace process. There are no similar polls among Palestinians, but it is reasonable to guess that less than one-quarter ofthem still support the peace process.
Do the majority of Palestinians reject the peace process just because they are frustrated, believing that it has brought too meager results? If so, the answer to the present crisis lies in both sides returning to the negotiation table as soon as possible, doubling their efforts to reach a mutually acceptable agreement. But if there is a deeper motive for this Palestinian attitude, namely hating the Jews so much that a compromise seems unthinkable, then the consequences are grim.
Being an optimist, I still believe in the possibility of Israelis and Palestinians - brothers, after all! - living together in peace.
