fascinating how biologists can hypercomplicate a trivial matter from information theoretical perspective. The picture is convolved with a difference of two Gaussian kernels. To save energy and constant firing at 50% level in most of the resultant picture, which is empty, a push-pull configuration of positive and negative cells is used.Kinda AB class instead of A class. The rest is trivial wiring. Focusing all the time on trivialities around positive and negative signs and arbitrarily chosen names for cells and speaking like if the areas "off center" and "on center" had clear boundaries. Which is wrong, its very important they are Gauss blurred. Without this the picture would be super crappy.
